Today, June 3, the United States Mint started selling rolls and bags of 2019 War in the Pacific National Historical Park quarters. Featuring a design emblematic of the historical area located in the territory of Guam, the coin marks the 48th release from the U.S. Mint’s America the Beautiful quarter dollar series.
Six unique products are available as part of the release, including single coin rolls, two-roll sets, three-roll sets, and three options of 100-coin bags. They hold circulation quality quarters pulled directly from the production floors of the Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco Mints.
War in the Pacific National Historical Park was established on Aug. 18, 1978 and contains over 2,000 acres set aside to commemorate the "bravery, courage, and sacrifice of those participating in the campaigns of the Pacific Theater of World War II," the park’s official website describes. Guam was captured by Japanese forces in 1941 and liberated by American forces in 1944. Signs of those military struggles can still be seen today at the park.
War in the Pacific Quarter Designs
The new quarter’s reverse portrays American forces coming ashore at Asan Bay, strengthening the number of troops on the island in the fight for Guam and its eventual liberation. Surrounding the image are inscriptions reading: "WAR IN THE PACIFIC," "GUAM," "2019," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM." Joel Iskowitz created the artwork and Michael Gaudioso sculpted it.
In second half of the following U.S. Mint video, Gaudioso talks briefly about his work on the quarter.
Like all coins in the series of America the Beautiful quarter dollars, its obverse shows a portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States. The effigy was designed by artist John Flanagan and has appeared on U.S. quarters since 1932.
Around the portrait are the inscriptions of "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "QUARTER DOLLAR." In addition, there is a mintmark with a "P" for Philadelphia, a "D" for Denver and an "S" for San Francisco.
