Gold Closes Near 3-Week High, Silver Jumps 3.2%
Gold futures rallied near a three-week high Monday as the U.S. dollar weakened and investors were bullish toward commodities and stocks.
Gold prices advanced $35.00, or 2.1 percent, to close at $1,670.80 an ounce in the December futures contract on the Comex in New York. It was the highest settlement price since September 22 when gold closed at $1,741.70 an ounce -- one day before it plunged by nearly $102. US Mint September 2011 Coin Production Rises 34.2%
The amount of circulating coins coming out of the United States Mint surged last month, according to September coin production figures released by the government agency. The increase snaps two-straight monthly declines.
Mintages were not revealed for James Garfield Presidential dollars or Chickasaw National Recreational Area quarters, the final 2011-dated coins set to enter circulation this year. Odyssey Finds Silver-Laden SS Gairsoppa Shipwreck
Odyssey Marine Exploration, based in Tampa, Florida, announced the find of the silver-laden, British-flagged SS Gairsoppa.
Some 300 miles off the coast of Ireland in international waters, the shipwreck site is located approximately 4,700 meters (almost 3 miles) below the surface, making the pending recovery one of the most complex operations ever undertaken.
At stake is an estimated 7 million ounces of silver, but the silver was just part of the cargo carried by the SS Gairsoppa when she was sunk [...]

U.S. gold and silver prices closed lower Friday but previous daily pick-ups combined to snap four-week losing streaks as gold advanced 0.8 percent and silver gained 3.0 percent.

NGC President Visits Universal Coin & Bullion
Rick Montgomery, President of Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (www.NGCcoin.com), visited the offices of Universal Coin & Bullion (www.UniversalCoin.com) in Beaumont, Texas on October 6, 2011 to meet with the company's sales staff and discuss the importance of third-party authentication and grading for consumer confidence and assets liquidity in the numismatic marketplace.
He explained the processes NGC uses to evaluate coins, and said his company now is examining an average of 125,000 coins each month. He also said NGC is working to remove from the marketplace counterfeits being made in China and sold in the United States [...]
US Mint Resumes Selling Silver Eagles and ATB 5 Oz Coins...
The United States Mint on Friday, October 7, cut prices and then resumed selling its line of numismatic silver products. The proof and uncirculated American Silver Eagles and the two latest America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins had been suspended on Monday, September 26.

2010-2011 US Mint Last Chance Products Include Sets, Rolls and Commemoratives
The United States Mint on Wednesday, October 5, added a new last chance products page to its online store entitled "Last Opportunity."
The last chance products includes a variety of 2010, 2011 and even a couple of 2009-dated offerings like proof and mint sets, quarter rolls, dollar rolls, and commemorative coins that celebrate the establishment of the U.S. Army and the Medal of Honor.
