Gold Retreats, Silver Halts 3-Day Winning Streak

Fine Gold BarsGold futures retreated below $1,670 an ounce Thursday as strength in the U.S. dollar curbed the appeal of the precious metal, opined analysts.

"I think we can find still a pretty big correction (in gold) if the dollar regains its preeminence as the reserve currency," Reuters quoted Stanley Crouch, chief investment officer at Aegis Capital, who oversees $2 billion in client assets. "Investors are investing in gold for the perceived safety, and yet what they're getting is incredible volatility."

Gold prices retreated $14.10, or 0.8 percent, to $1,668.50 an ounce in the [...]

In The Lead – 400. This is NOT Sparta!

Precious Metals CommentaryThe overnight action in precious metals turned towards moderate selling despite some decent regional physical offtake coming from Asia.

This morning's opening was really not much different; spot gold lost $7.10 to start the day off at the $1,667.00 bid level. In the background, the US dollar firmed a bit and remained well above the 77 level on the trade-weighted index. The greenback clawed back in the wake of the European banking-related news and speculators were once again showing that all might not be well in that system while also indicating that they are not quite as glum about the prospects for the American economy [...]

Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Dollar Coin CoverBuyers opted to hand out more money for coins last week as 63 United States Mint products outperformed their previous weekly gains, the latest sales figures from the bureau revealed.

Friday's returning silver coins and sets helped raise sales, although some silver products again had their totals cut lower than shown in the previous Mint sales report. The 2011-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle led those declines, dropping 424 to 182,100.

Improving silver products included the 2011-W Proof American Silver Eagle, the 2011 Silver Proof Set and one of the collector five-ounce coins, as highlighted by the Mint's top seven selling numismatic products [...]

The big gainer on the day was platinum, which showed a $30 lift to $1,544 while palladium added $9 and climbed to the $611 mark. It is being anticipated that [...]

2011 Commemorative Gold CoinsAs a result of higher trending gold, prices for United States Mint collector gold and commemorative coins may increase Wednesday, October 12.

If price hikes occur, they would mark a sixth straight week that the Mint has adjusted prices for its collector gold coins. But moving coins higher would also break a streak of four straight weeks where prices had been cut [...]

Fine Gold BarsGold futures retreated nearly $10 Tuesday, slicing away almost one-third of the previous day's gains as investors awaited a Slovakian vote on approving the European Union bailout fund.

"There is an incredible amount of headline risk at the moment because of the unclarity behind all the news out of the EU that may underpin gold or cause gold to sell off," Reuters quoted Fred Schoenstein, precious metals trader of Heraeus Precious Metals Management. "There is no real clear direction in which gold should trade."
