US Mint Sales: Type 2 Proof Gold Eagles and Virginia $1s Debut

19
proof Gold Eagle and Virginia dollar
Last week, the U.S. Mint started selling 2021-W Proof American Gold Eagles (Type 2) and uncirculated American Innovation dollars for Virginia

The United States Mint introduced two lines of products last week — four options of dollars honoring innovation in Virginia and five options of proof American Gold Eagles bearing the new, Type 2 designs. The U.S. Mint’s latest sales figures show every one of the products were among its best weekly sellers.

Released July 27, rolls and bags of Virginia Innovation dollars posted six-day sales of a combined 753,125 coins for one of the stronger starts in the series. The Virginia dollar depicts Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, the 17-plus mile bridge tunnel complex which is recognized as an engineering wonder of the modern world.

Here’s a summary of other recent Innovation dollar starts:

  • the first 2021 dollar, emblematic of Ralph Baer’s invention of the first home video game console and representing New Hampshire, opened with six-day sales of 785,700 coins,

  • the first 2020 dollar, recognizing the Gerber Variable Scale created by Joseph Gerber of Connecticut, posted six-day starting sales of 642,800 coins,

  • the second dollar for 2020, depicting the invention of the telephone by Massachusetts resident Alexander Graham Bell, opened with four-day sales of 682,025 coins,

  • the third 2020 dollar, showing the Hubble Space Telescope and representing Maryland, registered seven-day starting sales of 755,500 coins, and

  • the fourth 2020 dollar, depicting Septima Clark marching with three young African American students and representing South Carolina, opened with six-day sales of 550,775 coins.

Released July 29, products for the redesigned 2021-W Proof American Gold Eagle include 1 oz. coin, 1/2 oz., 1/4 oz. and 1/10 oz. coins, and an all-inclusive four-coin set. The smallest coin lasted the longest but even it was gone within 20 minutes. Mint stats show that sales of the Type 2 coins are pretty much hugging their limits.

Holy Morgan Dollar cancellations, Batman! As best as I can tell, both the “CC” and the “O” privy mark Morgan Silver Dollars have seen reductions in their sales numbers every single reporting period since the week after they first went on sale. This week’s Mint Sales Report shows that the “CC” had 2,197 order cancellations and the “O” had 1,696 of them. Of the 175,000 of each that were available to begin with, the number of “CC” Morgan Dollars sold for delivery in October is now down to 171,390 and the quantity of “O” Morgan Dollars that are similarly on… Read more »

The reduced sales figures for the 2021 Morgan Silver Dollars with the CC and O Privy Marks are quite significant and perplexing, considering the extremely high demand and fast sell out (i.e., no longer available) on their launch date, May 24, 2021 12:00 noon ET. As stated above, the Morgan CC privy sales were reduced by -2,197 coins and the Morgan O privy sales were reduced by -1,696 over the last week. Both coins had a mintage limit of 175,000, leaving the Morgan CC privy sales less -3,610 total coins with the latest sales at 171,390 and the Morgan O… Read more »

Rich,

I’m glad I’m not the only one so very surprised by this (at least for me) totally unexpected development. For a couple of coins that sold out so incredibly quickly they appear to be experiencing a rather serious comedown now, which instead of slowing looks to be accelerating. I am completely baffled as to what is motivating this seemingly major change of heart. What gives, I wonder.

Rich

Indeed, Sir Kaiser. Keep in mind that all of the orders for these coins are pre-sales and no purchases have been fulfilled and shipped out, and no credit cards have been charged. So it is easy to cancel these type of orders at any time after the presale date (May 24th) prior to the October-November time frame fulfillment/shipping date.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Rich,

I understand that part, and I realize that as a result of this somewhat unusual ordering arrangement it is literally 100% easier to cancel an existing order. What I can’t quite grasp, at least not as yet anyway, is why on earth so many people who pre-purchased these coins are now suddenly experiencing buyer’s remorse. What exactly happened between the original coin release day and the following days to turn these coins from an “absolutely must have” to a “maybe not so much”? Inquiring minds want to know.

Tim

What will the US Mint do with the thousands of Morgan Dollars that have been canceled and are apparently not sold of the 175,000 of each that were available to begin with?
Perhaps sell them in the middle of the night to TV coin shows?

Kaiser Wilhelm

Tim, As far as I know, prior to the ascension of Supreme Director Ryder to the Mint Throne, unsold coins whose mandated sales period had expired were all melted down as per standard Mint practice. Not too long ago Team Ryder sold a huge stash of these coins in their obviously un-melted original condition to some big re-sellers for them to put back into the numismatic market at their usual profiteering price levels. Bear in mind that when these coins first came out thousands of individual collectors had never gotten the opportunity to acquire them from the Mint. Just more… Read more »

Mjs1447

Can you cancel an order with the Mint? I recall trying once and was told I had to wait to receive it then return it. If thats the case then is the Mint doing the cancelling – credit card rejections is the only reason I can think of.

Larrry T

Finally some common sense emerges!

Kaiser Wilhelm

Mjs1447,

Excellent input, as that is certainly one distinct possibility for some of these previously so desirable coins to be taken out of the shipping queue. Another would be that one or more of the Authorized Bulk Buyers decided the secondary market was going to be less active and/or lucrative than was originally planned for and as such is (are) now in the process of cutting any future losses.

Interesting observation. However the mint always seemed to check credit cards at the time of your order. Thus, why would such changes happen months later from the order? Perhaps it is really the customer cancelling which also does not make sense as it appears they could, sadly, flip them at a profit. Of course, the mint could plan to issue” millions” more later; even thou, they have/ had “mintage limits”. A mintage limit has not stopped them in the past and likely is happening again today on the proof tenth oz Au coins. Yes, you can cancel as I did… Read more »

Kaiser Wilhelm

chuck, I see your point with the credit card scenario regarding how it shouldn’t take nearly that long for the Mint to verify the cards’ legitimacy, and that therefore this particular reason isn’t too likely to be applicable to this situation. As to why customers wouldn’t be cancelling thanks to the possibility of eventually making a profit on the coin, that applies more to professional re-sellers and frequent flippers but much less so to the average collector who isn’t in the business of doing that. Boiled down to the bare bones, I believe the most likely “suspect” to be among… Read more »

Regardless as to the real reason(s) for the subsequent cancellations, it is a shame that those who wanted them were lockout from getting them initially by those others.

Kaiser Wilhelm

chuck,

Precisely. This is why I continue to advocate for a one coin Household Order Limit in the first twenty-four hours and the abolishing of the Mint’s Authorized Bulk Purchase program. These moves would help to (a) greatly reduce ordering by profiteering re-sellers and (b) significantly expand the pool of individually buying collectors.

chuck

We can all guess at the reason(s). Hopefully, could it be the mint’s “new” policy on those in the Authorized Bulk Purchase program, which seems to restrict them, from “hiring” others to avoid the limits? At least, it appears the mint might be trying to crack down on that practice. If so good.

Kaiser Wilhelm

chuck, Without a doubt the new policy will have the effect of slowing the ABP program folks down. Rather unfortunately it won’t on the other hand do anything in regard to the multitude of non-ABP companies who will still be able to hire as many surrogate buyers (in the case of the PFS Buyers Club, for example, up to 20,000 per “event”) as they wish. The funny thing is that these individual commissioned agents get a piddling amount for compensation while the re-seller hits the big time by at the very least doubling or tripling the price. To the victor… Read more »

Mjs1447,

As Rich explained above, the cancellation process for these particular coins is completely unique. Since these purchases are all pre-orders for a product that won’t be shipped until October, all that is required to bail out of this particular contract is to call the Mint and cancel. One phone call and poof, the order no longer exists.

Perhaps the cancellations were due to a job loss or some unforeseen expenditure (car breaking down, medical expense, divorce).

Kaiser Wilhelm

Ken,

If that’s the case it indicates a very sorry state of affairs nationwide. On the other hand, why would income loss only effect these two coins and not all the others?
