2009 Buffalo Gold Bullion Coins to be Minted After All
2009 American Buffalo Gold Bullion coins will be produced this year, despite earlier reports to the contrary, a United States Mint public notice reveals.
Coin World broke the news in June, reporting that the US Mint would (at some future time) produce only the collector one-ounce, 24 karat Buffalo gold proof coin in 2009, and not the same-designed $50 bullion coin intended for investors.
However, an updated message appearing in the US Mint press room over the weekend reveals a new direction:

The sample of the first "test" currency from the international project for a new virtual global currency, given the draft name, "United Future World Currency – Eurodollar," was presented as the exclusive gift to Heads of State and Government at the G8 Summit: Barack H. Obama, Dmitij Anatolyevich Medvedev, Gordon Brown, Nicolas Sarkozy, Angela Merkel, Silvio Berlusconi, Taro Aso, Stephen Harper, Josè Mauel Barroso, Fredrik Reinfeldt.
The final name and symbol for the new currency will be decided in a competition for children in 1000 schools throughout the world, organised by the Museo del Tempo.
The initiative began in Italy and enjoys the patronage of the Italian Prime Minister's Office and the Italian Treasury. Although the initial aim is to unite the United States of America with the United States of Europe, it will also be open to other Countries.

US Mint Coin Sales Eased During Summer Break
Collectors had more on their minds than buying coins last week, the latest US Mint figures reveal. Sales were modest, held in check by diversionary summer travel and the celebration of an extended 4th of July holiday weekend.
As has been the case for several weeks, the Mint 2009 Proof Set led in sales. Another 101,409 were purchased on top of the last report, bringing the total sold to 785,821. It looks like the million figure will be breached by month's end.
