The United States Mint has for years been producing gold, silver and platinum American Eagles. Fulfilling a relatively new legal requirement, the United States Mint steps into a new phase of a process that should lead to the production of American Palladium Eagles.

Heritage Auctions will serve as the official auctioneer for the next four American Numismatic Association fall National Money Shows, beginning October 13-15, 2011 in Pittsburgh, ANA Executive Director Larry Shepherd has announced.

U.S. Postal Service inspectors are investigating the fraudulent use of stolen American Express credit cards to purchase apparently tens of thousands of dollars of gold coins.

"The orders are placed by phone, often for $10,000 to $20,000 worth of Liberty Double Eagles or other, large-sized gold coins. The callers have a foreign accent and sometimes have problems pronouncing the name on the credit card. They'll phone dealers and will correspond by email, but no one ever answers the phones when dealers try to call them back," said Michael Fuljenz, President of Universal Coin & Bullion in Beaumont, Texas who has been working with postal inspectors on several cases [...]

Spot metals dealings opened with assorted losses in New York this morning as the aforementioned decline in oil and concurrent rise in the US currency helped shape the trading patterns. Gold started the Monday session with a decline of $7.10 per ounce and it was quoted at $1,532.90 on the bid-side. Silver dropped 60 cents on the open and it started the day off at $35.30 the ounce.

Whatever the situation may be price-wise in the physical metals' arena, Frank Holmes (US Global) feels that "senior gold miners have seen the strongest gains, with average per-share earnings increasing roughly 67% since 2009 [...]

The Future Farmers of America (FFA) will celebrate its 85th anniversary in late 2013 through to 2014. To help celebrate the organization and occasion, a dozen U.S. Senators led by Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa have introduced new legislation seeking FFA commemorative coins.

Known as the National Future Farmers of America Commemorative Coin Act of 2011 and numbered S. 1181, the bill would authorize the United States Mint to produce up to 100,000 gold commemorative coins and as many as 500,000 silver commemorative coins that are "emblematic of the 85-year history of the National Future Farmers of America Organization." Gold and silver prices closed higher Friday as Greece's sovereign-debt issues continued to be bullish for both metals.

On the week, however, the metals were mixed. Gold gained 0.6 percent while silver prices fell 1.6 percent. Other precious metals were hit harder, with weekly losses of 4.4 percent for platinum and 8.8 percent for palladium.

On the Comex in New York Friday, August gold prices rose $9.20, or 0.6 percent, to settle at $1,539.10 an ounce [...]

Gold appeared set to record a second week of declines in value as the final trading session for the current week opened for action in New York this morning. The principal drivers of the yellow metal's weakness were still the firmness of the US dollar and the rising perception that some kind of economic slowdown is grinding away out there and that it will impact the demand for commodities.

As a reflection of the latter, the S&P Goldman Sachs Commodity Index fell by over 4% this week while the impact of the former yielded a 1.1% gain on the trade-weighted USD index [...]
