5,600+ Rare Currency Lots Featured in Heritage September Long Beach Auction
Heritage Auctions, the official auctioneer of the September Long Beach Coin and Currency Exposition, will be presenting more than 5,600 lots of rare and collectible currency as part of its Signature® Currency Auction, Sept. 7-9 and Sept. 11-12.
The lots will be offered in four floor sessions at the Long Beach Exposition and two additional sessions presented online.

Gold Prices Trim Weekly Loss to 3%; Silver Advances but Falls...
U.S. gold prices rose for a second straight day Friday, trimming their weekly loss to 3.0 percent.
The yellow metal settled a few dollars from $1,800 an ounce after having hit an all-time high of $1,917.90 on Tuesday before a two-day correction kicked-in and drove prices down to their lowest level of the week at $1,705.40 an ounce.

US Mint Commemorative Gold Coin Price Guide Published
The United States Mint released a new price guide for commemorative gold coins which determines coin prices weekly based on the direction of gold.
The U.S. Mint had suspended four 2011-dated commemorative gold coins on August 12 "due to the current market volatility" of precious metals. Each of the coins includes 0.2419 ounces of gold, which had brought their melt values very close to their selling prices [...]

Gold continued its stormy gyrations overnight, pretty much in concert with something that goes by the name of Irene; weakening, then strengthening, then weakening again, but still heading towards an as yet unknown final destination for the week.

US Mint Commemorative Gold Coins, Silver Sets Return from Suspensions
The United States Mint is again selling commemorative gold coins after a thirteen-day suspension. The Mint on Thursday also brought back two suspended silver sets following six days of absence.
Volatile and surging precious metals prices were the designated culprits for triggering the product suspensions. And although gold and silver have fallen from their heights in mere days -- ironically, the two metals are lower now than when the products were first suspended -- the commemorative gold coins return on sale at higher prices (+$79.35 each) while prices for the silver sets are unchanged. PCGS Rewards Mike Marshall for Combatting Counterfeit Coin Sales
Officials of the Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com) are applauding the efforts of collector Mike Marshall of Trenton, Ontario in combating the sales of counterfeit coins in Canada. At the recent PCGS Set Registry(SM) luncheon, PCGS announced it was awarding him with a check for $5,000 and a plaque praising his work.
"Mike Marshall has been a huge aid to PCGS in combating Chinese counterfeiting. His tenacity resulted in the removal of several counterfeiters from online auctions," said Don Willis, President of PCGS, a division of Collectors Universe, Inc. (Nasdaq: CLCT)...

Gold Advances Modestly, Silver Prices Rebound 4%
U.S. gold prices recovered slightly with an advance of nearly $6 Thursday after having cratered $134.60 during the previous two sessions in a corrective pull-back hedged with profit-taking.
"Gold's decline with such a dramatic magnitude in such a short period of time is driven by short-term momentum investors coming out, not long-term investors," Reuters quoted Stanley Crouch, chief investment officer at Aegis Capital, who oversees $2 billion in assets.

US Mint Sales: Eagle Gold Coins Robust, Grand Canyon 5 Oz...
The latest United States Mint sales figures provide several interesting revelations. Despite suspensions of gold coins and resulting higher prices, several marked improved gains. Other coins also rallied. 68 numismatic products outperformed their previous weekly gains during the third week of August. That compares to 48 in the second week and 26 in the first week.
In additional highlights, orders for the Grand Canyon National Park 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin are apparently maxed and the debuting sales results for rolls of Rutherford B. Hayes dollars are available.

The biggest decline in gold since 1980 (and not many readers may personally recall that fateful year) unfolded in recent hours and the rout extended into the morning hours on Thursday as the yellow metal fell yet another nearly $50 to touch the $1,702 mark overseas.
