U.S. Mint Sales: Coast Guard Medal Among Top Sellers

29

August was a busy month for the United States Mint with a string of popular silver and gold product launches. None were released last week, however, and as a result no products logged huge sales gains during the time. The clad and silver 2021-dated proof sets returned as the top two weekly sellers.

The 2021 Morgan Silver Dollars and the 2021 Peace Silver Dollar are being extremely consistent in the Mint’s weekly sales reports; they’re steadily going down, down, down.

Look at the 2021 Philadelphia Morgans and 2021 Peace Dollars; they are totally tanking!

All very odd. With the money not actually taken out of accounts, it isn’t really a sale, just a commitment at this stage.
On my card, the “pending” charges have disappeared, there is just nothing. So I am needing to make sure there is enough balance available when these charges finally appear.

I hope they actually sort this whole mess out, as I am losing confidence.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Daniel,

I understand your explanation of occurrences in the Mint’s sales department fully, but it is not the financial mysteries as such that have me somewhat disconcerted. I am in fact more concerned about the eventual, which is to say come the November ship date, value of the coins themselves. This might even become a chicken and egg situation where the unbroken line of cancellations for all of the Morgans and the Peace Dollar drives the value down and the dropping valuation torpedoes the pre-order numbers. This could get unpleasant.

Rich

Sir Kaiser, as you have pointed out the sales reductions of the 2021 Philly Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars are indeed shocking, especially in context that these two coins out of the set of six were to have been most sought after and popular for various reasons (e.g., they actually represented the 100 year anniversary issues from 1921). The silver lining to this version of the Mint’s “Calamity Over the Comstock” is that these 2021 issues may just be a 1-year/1-Hit wonder and not made into an annual series program. In which case, this one time 6-coin set may become… Read more »

Scarecrow

Well, maybe we can attribute the drops to one of these “off-the-wall” reasons! 1) the US Mint is performing detailed forensics of the purchases and are invalidating purchases from BOTs and known associates of buying clubs. 2) the dealers know when orders will open for the remaining unsold coins. In order to save the “bounty” money paid to their legions of buyers, they are cancelling their orders. They will work together and when orders reopen, they will buy the entire stock of remaining coins (remember, no household limit!) and make a huge bundle of money! 3) flippers feel guilty for… Read more »

Kaiser Wilhelm

Scarecrow, Those are some interesting hypotheses, and I’d like to respond to them in order. 1) What the US Mint set up to combat the BOT onslaught was a real-time scenario of interdiction, i.e. one that was in action for the duration of the first day of pre-orders. What would have happened after the completion of those sales was a canceling of all those pre-orders whose credit cards simply didn’t pass muster. Incidentally, it was discovered during the previous sales experience that, the BOTS had been launched by one or more buying clubs (who thereby controlled about 60% of the… Read more »

Rich,

Let us suppose that you are correct in your supposition that a one year only minting of these coins will elevate their numismatic importance and therefore their eventual worth. With that distinct possibility in mind, isn’t it therefore precipitously shortsighted for people to be canceling such large numbers of what could very well amount to being rather valuable coins?

domenic

Question….do they ACTUALLY mint these coins to the limit all at one time…..or mint as they go?. I know this brings up the problem of unsold that should TECHNICALLY get melted afterward IF any remained….which we all gather they havent done since there are some coins that end up over minted from bulk purchases or so it seems.Man i would LOVE to see thier accounting books!

Daniel

It does make you wonder. The American Liberty 225th Anniversary Gold Coin does my head in. https://catalog.usmint.gov/american-liberty-225th-anniversary-gold-coin-17XA.html 34,000 sold, of a mintage of 100,000. Yet 4 years later, it is still available to purchase. Did they mint 100,000 and the rest are they sitting on a shelf? That’s over $180M worth of inventory for one coin. My gut reaction would be “of corse they wouldn’t do that”, however I recently bought another 2018 high relief 1/10 oz Gold Liberty from the mint, and it shipped the next day, so it was definitely still in their warehouse waiting for someone to… Read more »

Kaiser Wilhelm

Daniel,

I realize that the 2018 1/10 Ounce Gold Liberty is a miniature replica of the 2017 One Ounce Gold Liberty, and while I do know that this latter coin was definitely struck in High Relief I’ve never seen any indication to the effect that the much smaller 2018 version was indeed also a High Relief product.

Daniel

Cool. ignore the words “high relief”.

still makes you wonder if there is one hundred and eighty million dollars worth of stock made and sitting on a shelf. That said, the value has risen significantly since 2017.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Daniel,

Just want you to know I wasn’t being a nitpicker; I was making sure that I myself hadn’t missed something. Thanks for clearing that up.

Now, as to all of those valuable precious metal coins just sitting there occupying space while earning nothing, government institutions operate by their own occasionally incomprehensible guidelines; ergo, I’m not at all sure we are equipped to solve that particular puzzle. Just sayin’.

Larry T

Daniel,

Do you really think the Mint would melt the unsold 2017 Liberty coins? My God, that would scream of racism! I don’t believe our institutions, hell our country, could survive such an act.

Kaiser Wilhelm

domenic,

It almost seems as if the Mint has two separate accountings, one for the published Product Limit which applies to the average buyer and the other for the Advance Bulk Purchase Sales companies. If this kind of system is indeed in place then the resellers will always have the advantage over the individual buyer since the formers’ allotment is flexible while the latter’s is not.

JWP

So if you look into your crystal ball – what do you think the value of the 5 – 2021 morgans and the 2021 peace dollar will look like after the mint delivers the merchandise? The cc and o privy morgans are both well in excess of $350, will this value hold up? What say you?

Kaiser Wilhelm

JWP, I’m glad you’re asking me this as two distinct questions as I do believe there are significant differences of context involved. As to the overall picture, I would imagine that the five Morgan Dollars and the one Peace Dollar will at the very least maintain their sale prices over time. On the other hand, these coins may come to realize some gains if this release turns out to be a one time only affair rather than becoming an annual event. Now specifically addressing the issue of the two Morgan Dollars with privy marks, I’d venture to say that the… Read more »

JWP

So, do you think the cc & O will maintain a value in excess of $350 or more? Just asking.

Kaiser Wilhelm

JWP, If you’re asking for a point blank answer, I would say NO. The $350 asking price is just that, a price, and price alone does not automatically equal value. Once the notion of scarcity that the Buying Club’s BOT maneuvers engendered fades away, I doubt anyone will still be willing to pay that artificially-generated price so it will drop accordingly. In addition, these two Morgan Dollars neither have an actual mint mark nor were they made at the two closed Mints they purport to represent. These are privy mark Dollars, which may make them somewhat interesting but not necessarily… Read more »

I think the biggest “draw” to the Morgan and Peace Dollar releases is what they are inherently….2 beloved coin designs by the numismatic community. In my opinion their ultimate value will be stacked upon rich histories of both designs….hence the actual demand by true collectors. I missed out on the D and S morgans….which im ok with . I hope the actual market for them settles to a reasonable price once all is said and done. The whole fiasco of their release is whats truly pumping up the price right now as i see it. Right now ordering a coin on… Read more »

Kaiser Wilhelm

domenic, Granted, it was very unwise of the Mint to allow their eighteen purposely anonymous Authorized Bulk Purchasers to skim 10% off the top of each coin’s Mintage Maximum knowing there would be fierce competition for these Morgan and Peace Dollars regardless of any such extraneous circumstances. We are obviously cognizant of the fact that those particular advance sales are in fact responsible for the subtraction of 17,500 of each of the Morgan Dollars and 20,000 of the one Peace Dollar from the quantity of coins available during the public sale of each coin. Such as they are, however, those… Read more »

Well the status of all my orders over the last few months have changed from PROCESSING to BACK ORDER.
They had been happily sitting as PROCESSING for so long, that the sudden change has me a little nervous

domenic

mine went backorder much quicker.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Domenic & Daniel,

If you are both referring to the Morgan and Peace Dollar pre-orders, there is nothing to be concerned about. The status of “Back Order” is one that series will likely maintain until their actual distribution in November.

On the other hand, if there are still some other coins you haven’t yet received, it would behoove you to look into the whereabouts of those posthaste as all those orders should have been fulfilled by now.

maxresdefault.jpg
domenic

Doesnt this raise the question…..Who will get first dibs at getting at least 1 of each of these….and when…..or will they go to…..? I still need 1 each of the D and S mints.

Kaiser Wilhelm

domenic,

I obviously can’t attest to this with absolute certainty, but I really don’t believe the Mint will be doing anything like dividing orders into bits and pieces for purposes of intermittent distribution to its various customers. The Mint will likely take whole orders at a time and then in whatever sequence they have decided upon ship all of those orders out in that very form. Any alternative packaging and distribution method would not only be much more costly in every way but above all many times as complex and as such far more prone to error.

In case you have not heard. Ebay is forcing the pre-sale sellers to cancel all pre-sale orders and do refunds to the buyers. The long term pre -sale window is now a problem with Ebay policy. I just got a refund for the Morgan “D” issue that I was shut out by the mint for. any one else get this msg?

Kaiser Wilhelm

JWP, Now this is interesting. Ebay just so happens to be one of the three legs of the coin profiteering tripod, the other two being the Mint’s eighteen anonymous Authorized Bulk (Advance) Purchasers and that notorious Buying Club in Brooklyn (the one that apparently unleashed all of the BOTS which for all practical purposes managed to by and large overrun the Mint’s website for the disastrous Morgan “O” and “CC” Dollar Pre-Order Sale). The issue that Ebay is rightfully addressing here is that the shysters on its site who have already charged their unsuspecting customers for coins that won’t be… Read more »

P.S. – I believe that some serious thanks are due to whoever at Ebay had the foresight and fortitude to take the bull by the horns and put an abrupt end to this ongoing monkey business.
