The Royal Australian Mint launches the commemorative 2008 Northern Territory $5 silver proof coin, which is the fifth coin released since the start of the State Series in 2006.

The Royal Australian Mint marks the 30th anniversary of self-government for the Northern Territory with the release of a commemorative five dollar coin.
The Commonwealth conferred self-government on the Northern Territory on 1 July 1978 by enacting the Northern Territory (Self-Government) Act 1978. This day is celebrated every year as Territory Day.

The United States Mint pulled the trigger this afternoon in announcing a sale date of July 15 for fractional American Buffalo gold coins, and then just as quickly snuffed the message.
Currently, the U.S. Mint offers only proof one ounce American Buffalo gold coins. The Mint sent out a message through its press release RSS feed indicating American Buffalo gold coins in proof and uncirculated versions would be sold July 15 at noon (ET) in the following sizes:
- one ounce,
- one-half ounce,
- one-quarter ounce.
- one-tenth ounce, and
- a four-coin set which contains one coin in each size.
Essentially, the Buffalo gold coins will be sold similar to American Eagle Gold coins.

(Dallas, Texas) – An unprecedented "lot" will be offered in conjunction with the official auction of the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money® convention in Baltimore: lunch with Heritage Auction Galleries Co-Chairman, best-selling author and acclaimed numismatic authority, Jim Halperin.
All proceeds from the winning bid, including the buyer’s premium, will be donated to the ANA’s education programs for improving numismatic resources on the ANA web site, including the successful Coins in the Classroom project that is used by teachers nationwide.
The winning bidder will have a one-on-one lunch with Halperin at a mutually convenient time and place.
"The rarity of this offering cannot really be overstated. I don’t recall ever in our 21 years working together of having lunch one-on-one with Jim," quipped Heritage President Greg Rohan.
The lunch date lot will be offered during Heritage’s Platinum Night sale, Wednesday evening, July 30, 2008, in the Baltimore Convention Center. Bids will be accepted in person and online at www.HA.com.

New York gold climbed sharply Tuesday, reaching a 10-week high as European stocks dived, oil prices rose and inflation worries drove investors toward precious metals.
Gold closed up $16.20 to $944.50 an ounce. At one point, it reached as high as $948.50.
Silver followed, rising more than 4 percent and up 78 cents to $18.29 an ounce.
Platinum moved higher by $16.70 to $2086.20 an ounce.

Uncirculated 2008 American Eagle Platinum Coins were launched today by the U.S. Mint. These 99.95 percent pure platinum coins for collectors bears the "W" mint mark, indicating they were minted at the Mint’s West Point facility.

Like their proof counterparts, each coin depicts the final Judicial Branch design from the three-year series entitled The Foundations of American Democracy.
The 2008 platinum coins come in bullions sizes of one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce and one-tenth ounce. There is also a four-coin set available that includes each coin size.

Gene Hessler is the 2008 recipient of the American Numismatic Association’s highest honor, the Farran Zerbe Memorial Award for Distinguished Service. He will be presented the accolade Aug. 2 during the Awards Banquet at the World’s Fair of Money® in Baltimore.
Hessler, of Cincinnati, Ohio, is best known in the numismatic world as a paper money expert, who coined the term "syngraphics."
He is the author of The Comprehensive Catalog of United States Paper Money, which garnered the Nathan Gold Memorial Award and the Robert Friedberg Award; An Illustrated History of U.S. Loans, 1775-1898; U.S. Essay, Proof & Specimen Notes; The Engraver’s Line: An Encyclopedia of Paper Money and Postage Stamp Art; and The International Engraver’s Line. A prolific writer for numismatic periodicals, he edits Paper Money, the Society of Paper Money Collectors’ journal.

Leon Hendrickson is the recipient of the American Numismatic Association’s 2008 Numismatist of the Year for his many contributions to the hobby. He will be presented the award during the ANA Membership Reception at 4 p.m. Aug. 1 during the World’s Fair of Money® in Baltimore.
Hendrickson is widely known as the founder and president of Silver Towne, a coin dealership and mint he founded in 1949 in Winchester, Ind. He began by selling coins out of a cigar box stashed under the counter of his restaurant, and the business grew from there. Today, Silver Towne employs 100 people and features a coin shop, jewelry and collectibles departments, and custom mint.

It’s not the largest or heaviest gold coin in the world, but this commemorative Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Gold Coin commands attention. Weighing in at 22 pounds (10 kg), a diameter 7.09 inches (18 cm) and made from .9999 fine gold, the 100,000 legal tender Chinese Yuan coin will cost one cool million to own.

A spectacular price for sure, but is the coin worth its weight in gold? At gold’s current spot price of $942.80 an ounce and considering there are 12 troy ounces per troy pound, that puts the coin’s bullion value at about $249,000.
It’s rare to find any commemorative priced as low as its bullion value. Why?
