2011 Lucy Hayes First Spouse Gold Coins Released by US Mint
The United States Mint released the 2011 Lucy Hayes First Spouse Gold Coins on Thursday, September 1, at noon Eastern Time. The special collector coins are the twentieth in the 24-karat gold coin series that started five years ago in 2007.

Bullion prices gained nearly 2% in advance of the opening of the New York trading session and they did so despite a steady-to-rising US dollar and (once again) despite a loss of nearly 1% in crude oil and a decline in copper. GreatCollections’ August 2011 Coin Auctions Realize $828,000
Internet coin auction company, GreatCollections, sold over $828,000 in certified coins during August 2011, setting numerous company records with almost 2,000 coin auctions sold.
One of the many highlights of the month was the Anacapa Collection of U.S. gold coins, which realized $202,178 with a sell-through rate of 96%. This collection included several U.S. rarities, notably the 1866-S Liberty Eagle No Motto NGC AU-55 and 1907 Saint-Gaudens High Relief NGC MS-64 [...]
Gold Dips 0.1%, Silver Prices Decline 0.6%
U.S. gold and silver prices dipped modestly on the first trading day of the month. The yellow metal's decline halted a two-session winning streak and comes after gold jumped 12.3 percent in August.
Cited factors attributed to losses included a surging U.S. dollar and newly released Institute for Supply Management (ISM) data showing slow, but better-than-expected growth in the manufacturing sector [...]

Spot gold dealings opened with a gain of... $1.00 -- if you can believe such a number after the past couple of weeks of that market's gyrations. The $1,830 resistance area (and the more significant one at $1,855 or so) is holding up for the moment but then again so has the $1,775 support one (as well as the far more pivotal one at $1,650), thus far. Spot gold was bid at $1,825.20 the ounce and players were eyeing a rising greenback as well as a small slippage in crude oil and a larger one (1.35%) in copper. 2012 Australian Kookaburra Silver Bullion Coins were released today, September 1, 2011 by the Perth Mint of Australia. The new Silver Kookaburras are available in three different .999 fine silver sizes -- 1 kilo, ten ounce and one ounce.

Gold Prices Soar 12.3% in August, Silver Adds 4.1%, Silver Eagle...
U.S. gold prices settled higher Wednesday, capping a soaring gain of $200.50, or 12.3 percent, in August. Silver advanced as well, ending $1.66, or 4.1 percent, higher on the month.
The pick-ups come on the heels of respective gold and silver gains in July of 8.5 percent and 15.1 percent.

Precious metals opened mixed on this, the last trading day of a truly stormy (in all regards) month. The first ten days of market action saw the Dow plunge and erase its 2011 gains and gold shoot up from $1620 to $1760 while the next ten sessions offered a rebound in the equity market that unfolded in concert with a yet stronger push in gold to new peaks above $1,900 the ounce.
