As expected, the U.S. Mint’s new 2023-S Proof American Silver Eagle from its San Francisco facility was its best weekly seller.
Released on Oct. 10 in two product options — standalone and in 40-coin packs for authorized bulk buyers — the proof coin achieved combined sales of nearly 205,000 in the first six days of its release.
When breaking down the numbers by product, sales include 180,104 coins for the standalone option (product code 23EM) and 24,640 coins for the 40-coin bulk option (product code 23EM040), with 616 units sold, resulting in a combined total so far of 204,744 coins.
Released annually, this year’s proof Silver Eagle is available for $80, and it has no mintage or product limits.
Conversely, last year’s single option coin sold for $73 and it was restricted to a mintage of 200,000. It quickly sold out. Another 117,000 coins were sold to bulk buyers. The sales figures for these two product options have remained unchanged for some time. The 2022-dated Silver Eagle is also part of the 2022 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set, which is still available for $220. Its sales just increased by 103 from the previous week, bringing its total to 48,147 coins out of the possible 50,000. In total, sales of the 2022-S Proof Silver Eagle across all three product options now stand at 364,812 coins.

In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 361 numismatic products.
Among these products, 59 outperformed their sales from the previous week, compared to 54 in the prior report. Not counting the newest proof Silver Eagle, 4 products experienced an increase of more than 1,000 units, the same as in the previous report.
Meanwhile, 3 products experienced a decline in weekly sales, also matching the prior report. The reductions included the 2023-P Native American $1 250-Coin Box (-1), the 2023-P Uncirculated Morgan Silver Dollar (-22), and the 2023 Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Silver Medal (-77).

You can bet that at $80 a pop for $23 in silver value, & no mintage limit, the U.S. Mint is striking more of these common coins – afterall, they have until December 31 by law to strike more of these cash cows in all versions they offer. What government Mint or private Mint wouldn’t like to get $80 for an ounce of common silver!? (I do not like the new 2021 reverse design on these ASE $1 coins from day one, especially the eagle’s clipped wing).

On regular coins, they have to be struck by December 31, 2023. For official commemorative coins programs passed by Congress & signed into public law by the president, they have to ship from the Mint’s private vendor warehouse by December 31 (although the Mint usually stops taking orders around December 28 or so to make sure they get out the door before the deadline).

If I could mint a silver coin for $80 (using $23 of silver) you can bet I’d be minting them till the longhorn cattle come home. I like your description of these as ‘common coins’, but I have to say the one thing that does make them a bit more appealing is the premium box they’re presented in. You can never go wrong with a quality box. The reverse eagle design doesn’t inspire me to buy any of these coins, particularly at these mintage numbers and their price point.
I don’t care for either reverse design. They should have stayed with the original Walking Liberty eagle design. It’s beautiful.
I’d still be collecting the ASE’s if they used the Walking Liberty eagle design instead of the current reverse.
When I buy coins I like to know that whatever is put on the mintage level that they stay on that vintage level if it’s 200,000 it should not make $200,001. I want to buy coins that may be rare in the future. Why tell people you are minting 200,000 of something and you meant three or $400,000 I know it comes down the money. Greed. And when I return coins that I did not order it’s taking me 2 months and I still have not gotten my money back.
A result of the fiasco of 2021. That was a mess.
