The San Francisco Mint makes a fine Proof American Silver Eagle. Very happy with mine.

Antonio

Mine arrived as well and it looks good. It’s joined my proof W ASE and uncirculated W ASE. I think I’m done for the year as far as mint purchases are concerned. I look forward to next year and the Morgan and Peace dollar resumption.

Kaiser Wilhelm

I don’t think it will, Antonio, as at the moment it appears to be this “S” ASE. Or maybe it’s the “W”; I seem to keep seeing conflicting reports.

Antonio

This is what Coin World reported: The eight-coin 2022 Limited Edition Proof Silver set scheduled for release sometime this fall by the U.S. Mint will be limited to an issue of 50,000 sets at $201 per set. The coins in the set will be made of .999 fine silver. The set will comprise a 2022-S Roosevelt dime, the first five American Women quarter dollars — recognizing Maya Angelou, Dr. Sally Ride, Wilma Mankiller, Nina Otero-Warren and Anna May Wong — and a Kennedy half dollar, all struck in Proof and bearing the S Mint mark of the San Francisco Mint.… Read more »

Kaiser Wilhelm

Okay and way to go, Antonio, for finally setting the record straight in this regard, and in big bold letters at that! 🙂

Kaiser Wilhelm

Oops, I of course meant to direct my last comment to Major D; it’s not too difficult to lose track of which comment came from whom.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Now I’m REALLY confused, as the addressee of my comment had in fact been the correct one in the first place and when I then erroneously “corrected” it I achieved the opposite result.

The problem with the inevitable progression of aging is that episodes of brain gas release become ever more frequent, typically inclined to surreptitiously fog the cognitive landscape.

Antonio

I thought the 3rd one was, “I forget what the 3rd one is.”

Kaiser Wilhelm

Or perhaps even, “There was a third one?”

Rich

Major, maybe the surprise is “Will it have a S or W proof American Silver Eagle?” Coin World (March 22, 2002) says “W” and CoinNews (August 17, 2022) says “S” and the US Mint 2022 Product Schedule listing for the set only says “S”

Rich

Typo above… should read Coin World (March 22, 2022)

Kaiser Wilhelm

Oh darn, Good Sir Rich, here I was just starting to revel in the goose bump raising notion that Coin World had some sort of extraordinary prescient power we mere mortals appear to lack.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Antonio,

I’m done for the year also with the exception of the last of the 3 Roll Sets of AWQs.

Antonio

I’m done unless the Mint changes its mind about silver proof S Morgan and Peace dollars. Then I’m game. Game on!

Kaiser Wilhelm

How about a Two Coin Set of Enhanced Reverse Proof Morgan and Peace San Francisco Silver Dollars in a very fancy clamshell case?

Antonio

Not a rare issue. We’ll see what prices settle at. As I understand it, the W ASE will be included in the Ltd Ed Silver Proof set.

Rich

The 2022 S Proof ASE should be included in the 2022 LESPS.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Major D, Good Sir Rich and Antonio,

You know what I want in this year’s LESPS; an “S” Mint Mark Enhanced Reverse Proof. I’ve never gotten over missing out on the other one.

Antonio

The set also should not be $201 but it is. According to an article in Coin World, the set will include a W ASE.

Rich

Antonio, thanks for the clarification and source of the information, i.e., the Coin World article published on March 22, 2022.

Antonio

I know, it’s from almost five months ago. We won’t know until the Mint definitively releases the information, or you have a set in your possession.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Or, Antonio, after the Set arrives the Mint will issue a recall since they sent the wrong ASE after all. It could happen!

Antonio

and you could keep the set regardless. lol.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Now there’s a man who thinks like a tried and true “never look a gift horse in the mouth” aficionado!

Rich

Antonio and Sir Kaiser, I forgot the mention a more recent Coin World article that Major D had pointed out regarding the S Proof ASE being included in the 2022 LESPS. The Coin World article Limited-edition American Eagle $1 enrollments closed, published July 29, 2022, states: “In addition, the Proof 2022-S American Eagle dollar is to be included in the 2022 Limited Edition Silver Proof set, which will be offered later this year.”

Antonio

Either way, whether S or W, a ASE will be part of the Limited Edition Silver Proof set this year.

Rich

That would be a safe assumption.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Good Sir Rich,

When it comes to the doings of the Mint is anything ever really “safe”?

Antonio

Anticipation, anticipation, is making me wait.

Kaiser Wilhelm

I think it would be beyond awesome if it were somehow realistically practical for the the Mint to include a ASE-D Proof in the LESPS!

Kaiser Wilhelm

That is so totally awesome, Mike Hunt. In return I’ll be sure to raise two huge glasses of Ice Cold Raspberry Sparkling Water to you, kind sir!

Mike Hunt

Herr Kaiser — We enjoyed these ice cold brews after visiting the Abbey in Melk (off the Danube as it enters the Wachau Valley). A couple comments: damn but that beer tasted good after spending all that time essentially in a Church … and if you get a chance to go there, do it! THE MOST INCREDIBLE Abbey I have ever seen! Stunningly beautiful.
— Mike

DSCN0631 Melk V2 @70%.jpg
Kaiser Wilhelm

Mike Hunt, I am so glad you had the opportunity to explore and enjoy the wonders of Stift Melk (Melk Abbey). When my family was living in Wien (Vienna) from 1945 through 1955 we made many trips into the Wachau (Danube River Valley). On one of these we happened to spend the night at the Abbey in rather large former Monks’ Cells which had been converted into guest rooms. It was truly amazing to be housed for a night within those ancient, massive and cold Abbey walls!

MELK-stift.jpg
Kaiser Wilhelm

And one of the Abbey’s impressive hallways…

Mike Hunt

Kaiser —
You certainly have some incredible memories enjoyed in some incredible places. Those hallways were magnificent. But the circular stairs were beyond belief. I must confess that I upskirted a few of them ….

Kaiser — As I was re-reading (an “old guy” thing to do I’m sure you’ll agree) these entries, I thought you might find it of interest that we essentially walked in the same foot prints. The picture of the “2 Kaisers” I posted was taken outside the small shop at the point in the upper left of your overall picture. The picture looking up at the Abbey was taken at the lower left of your picture and across that river. And I walked some of the same incredible hallways with their gorgeously-ornate celings. I wonder how many of our other… Read more »

Good for you, Major D. By the way, even though I never sell my coins the Mintage is still interesting but not exactly crucial.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Ditto at my end, Major D. I had enrolled for two and they arrived three days after Release Day. Awesome!

Rich

The Mint’s bonus offer (which ended on 8/15/2022) to get a free 2018-W $10 Gold American Liberty Proof Coin with the purchase of the 2017-W $100 Gold American Liberty 225th Anniversary High-Relief Proof Coin resulted in a relatively big jump in sales for the coins [+595 for the 2017-W $100 American Liberty Gold Coin and +675 for the 2018-W $10 American Liberty Gold Coin]. During the first week of the offer, the coin(s) sold for $2,665, but during the last week and half, it sold for $50 more at $2,715. The notion of free gold is peculiar, especially coming from… Read more »

With all that said, I just read email received this morning from the Mint “American Liberty Offer Extended to August 20!”

Kaiser Wilhelm

Good Sir Rich,

“Free Gold” from the Mint may indeed seem somehow peculiar, but it still makes far more sense than the absurd term “Free Gift” aka the English language’s ultimate redundancy.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Major D,

Sell them two for the price of one or melt them all down? 😉

Kaiser Wilhelm

Major D and Good Sir Rich, Since you already know me to occasionally engage in gadfly-like behavior, I’m going to play the devil’s advocate here and point out that it’s not uncommon in business to offer very attractive sale prices at or near the tail end of a product run. As an example, prospective passengers who are willing to take the chance can simply wait until the last few days before a cruise sets sail to book the best cabins at the lowest prices, thereby procuring passage at a much lower rate than their early-ticketed shipboard neighbors who quite likely… Read more »

Good Sir Rich,

There is of course yet one more logical solution which I could propose to the Mint as the most efficient disposal method for all those aging Gold American Liberty Ducats; to wit, a Tax Deductible Donation to the Kaiser Wilhelm Homeless Coin Foundation.

Rich

I like your idea of a non-profit organization, Kaiser Wilhelm’s Home for Coins, or “Coins Town” as it becomes known.

Kaiser Wilhelm

It’s very encouraging to have your prodigious numismatic presence on board with this vision of mine, Good Sir Rich! Since the facility will quite fittingly be located in the old ancestral stomping grounds of Vienna I rather doubt there will be any objections to applying the German iteration of its name, to wit “Muenzenheim Kaiser Wilhelm”!

Got my 15 coins yesterday.

Interesting article about going-ons at Mint concerning supply and supplier – good read …

Extremely interesting and very timely info, Chris Terp. Many thanks for sharing!

P.S. It emphasizes ideas about Bullion ASEs that I’ve been trying to bring attention to.

Yes Kaiser, well put together article that highlights several issues. I hope more review.

Kaiser Wilhelm

What I especially liked about that article, Chris Terp, is that it tied so many different parts of this complicated issue together in a very comprehensible manner.

Rich

Thanks, Chris. The Mint really has a (blank) silver problem.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Good Sir Rich,

Putting what I read in Chris Terp’s article together with what I already knew about the Mint’s financial operations, I would venture a guess that the Mint doesn’t purchase what it considers to be costly inventories of future-use precious metal planchets because that considerable expense would detract from the total amount of the seigniorage the Mint passes on yearly to the Treasury Department.

Antonio

There are no silver blanks to produce proof S Morgan and Peace dollars for this year?

Kaiser Wilhelm

That, Antonio, is precisely why the Mint had to opt out of producing this year’s previously planned and promised Morgan and Peace silver dollars. With the exception of the “replica” coins that were minted for the 100th Anniversary of the Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars I can’t help but have mixed feelings as to continuing the current day production of same. After all, those coins have already achieved an indelible place in numismatic history. IMHO to resurrect them for want of being able to come up with something entirely new is reminiscent of making an endless number of sequels for… Read more »

Major D,

I’m well aware of the lingering demand for these Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars among the coin collecting population, but when looking at the whole situation as a compartmentalized planning issue rather than simply a “comfortable old shoe” one I do believe that in the long run it would be beneficial for the Mint to instead just move on, and to something new and different.

Antonio

But next year’s offerings look so good. Do you think they’ll nix the whole offering and end it with no more? That would be sad.

Kaiser Wilhelm

I’m not in any way stating either that my opinion should in any way be taken as somehow universally applicable or that the Mint has any ideas or notions in place to possibly renege on next year’s extensive Morgan and Peace Silver Dollar lineup.

As I’ve said before, I sincerely believe that there are likely as many distinct opinions about everything there is to have an opinion about as there are people on earth, and I would hazard a guess this applies to all of us coin collectors in America as well.

Major D,

I think it’s a case of possessing cojones maximus that gives dealers the gumption to both advertise and sell bullion ASE’s priced as if they were genuine burnished uncirculated numismatic grade Silver Eagles. Welcome to another corner of the suckers’ marketplace in all of its full glory.

Major D,

I have to concur that is a possible, even quite plausible projected scenario. Whether or not, on the other hand, there are solid alternatives to the Numismatic ASEs is an entirely different question.

The problem with Modern Medals is that since they as yet have no historic value, for the moment they effectively restricted to functioning as Silver Rounds. The shortcoming, on the other hand, of the Commemorative Coins is simply the lack of any serious, widespread collecting interest they clearly seem to be saddled with.

Agree Major D on bullion secondary market madness.

Proofs and burnished coins are a tad expensive right now but only time will tell how much value they’ll be worth. What’s the definition of limited anyway? 75K, 20K, 10K? Again, time will begin to set the true market price for them not the ginned up hype some folks (and Mint officials) are trying to force unto the market.

Kaiser Wilhelm

What really burns me about bullion “coins” being sold at such extraordinarily large premiums on the secondary market is how often these investment ducats are presented as being the “real thing”, that what is up for sale are genuine numismatic grade burnished American Silver Eagles. I’ve even seen these bullion pieces being sold online in original US Mint Uncirculated ASE cases to further confuse the issue and to better disguise the actual source and nature of these grossly misrepresented “coins'”. Doubtless, grifting at its finest, or worst, if you will.

Yes Kaiser, there are sellers who pull the wool over many buyers peddling bullion as something else. Or if the seller is coy, just states American Silver Eagle without specifying bullion, burnished or proof leaving it up to the buyer to believe they’re getting what they want – proof at a cheaper price. 🙁

Kaiser Wilhelm

This, Chris, is one of those situations where “Buyer Beware” is more important than ever. Unfortunately, many buyers aren’t aware of much of anything when it comes to buying coins so they are sickeningly easy to take for a ride and for their money.
