Gold edged higher Tuesday for the first time in three sessions as support came from a weaker greenback and rising oil prices.

American Silver Eagles again proved their popularity as opening sales of the 2012-W Proof American Silver Eagle soared. The United States Mint reported five-days sales of nearly $18 million between their Thursday release and Monday.

As is typical for the 99.9% pure silver coin each year, the latest issue generated the best debut total for a U.S. Mint numismatic product this year. Unit sales reached 299,539 for a daily average of 59,908 coins. At its $59.95 price, the sales total over the five days summed exactly to $17,957,363.05 [...]

Gold declined Monday and for a second straight day as early gains in the U.S. dollar helped drive the yellow metal to its lowest settlement price since April 5.

This morning's New York-based dealings had gold opening at $1,646.50 per ounce down $12) and silver starting the session at $31.47 per ounce (down 3 cents).

The weakness in prices was attributed in part to growing anxieties surrounding the debt situation in Spain and to the perception that, despite the PBOC's yuan trading decision, the world's second largest economy is possibly wobbly. The euro briefly dipped under the pivotal $1.30 mark this morning and that development certainly did not help gold [...]

Gold marched ahead 1.8% this week despite a loss of more than $20 on Friday.

U.S. stocks, gold and other commodities declined Friday as data showed a cooling in China's growth and euro debt worries resurfaced as the cost to insure Spanish debt climbed to an all-time high. Against these backdrops, the U.S. dollar firmed and precious metals slid.
