U.S. coin production in April climbed sharply over the previous month and from the same time last year, newly reported figures from the United States Mint show. Just three coins were produced for circulation last month, plus one for collectors.
Among the updated numbers were mintages for the Chaco Culture National Historical Park Quarter -- the second of five 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters, and three of the four 2012 Presidential dollars honoring Chester Arthur, Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison.
In The Lead – Doom & Gloom Of Another Variety
After suffering a roughly 4% loss last week, gold prices headed even lower overnight and this morning as further erosion in crude oil and the euro and further advances in the US dollar made life more difficult for the few remaining bulls in the market.
Bullish sentiment had already dipped to well under the ten percent mark late last week, giving rise to hopes that a counter-trend rally might finally emerge today after six-plus brutalizing trading weeks and a ten-week-old chart downtrend but the flight to (US) cash has prevented [...]
Gold Logs 2nd Straight Weekly Loss, American Eagle Coins Mixed
Gold declined Friday, securing a second straight weekly loss along with other precious metals. Gold prices fell in four of the last five days as investors' instead favored the U.S. dollar which extended its winning streak to ten sessions.
"When the market gets very nervous, then they (investors) buy dollars and gold finds it difficult to rally," Bloomberg quoted Jesper Dannesboe, an analyst at Societe Generale SA in London. "Given what's going on in the markets at the moment, any rally will probably just be a bounce before another setback."
Weekly precious metals losses were 3.7% for gold, 5.1% for silver, 4.2% for platinum and 7.5% for palladium [...]

In The Lead – A Whale Of A Tale
After briefly poking above the $1,600 mark during the trading day on Thursday, gold prices resumed their march towards lower value ground and were once again seen touching the $1,585 level by the late evening hour in New York.
With gold prices orbiting near 17-week lows there are naturally quite a number of questions surrounding the yellow metal's near and medium-term fate and a couple of institutional firms (Barclays Capital sees an average of $1,716 gold this year) have cautiously reduced their forecast for bullion with regard to those time frames [...]
