U.S. precious metals were mixed for a second straight day on Wednesday. Gold and silver advanced to fresh highs while platinum and palladium gave away previous gains to fall into the red for the year.

U.S. gold topped $1,400 an ounce and silver prices reached a fresh 31-year high Tuesday as uprisings in the Mideast and North Africa elicited safe-haven buying, opined analysts.
Gains were deeper around the world during the previous day, however, when the key New York market was closed in celebration of President's Day [...]

Out of Africa – Tuesday Kitcommentary
Proving once again that explosive geopolitical developments trump any and all bullish wagers made on anticipation of future inflation, or the future fate of the US dollar, gold prices soared on Monday as the "Jasmine Revolution" (or, will it eventually become known as the "Twitter Revolt?") spread and intensified.
Any bearish thoughts among traders were placed on temporary 'hold' on Monday, amid such conditions as the missive of the day read: "Fear and Hoarding Worldwide." [...]

Parisian Blinds? – Friday Kitcommentary
As Friday's trading sessions got underway, gold appeared set to complete its best weekly gain of the current year and silver orbited around the $32 level -- a fresh 30-year peak-following yesterday's fund feeding frenzy that added a dollar and a dime to its value, and, much, beyond-bullish sentiment, to the camp that refuses to see it for being a bubble in the making [...]
