Gold prices lost $3.00 to settle at $1,610.60 an ounce in the February futures contract on the Comex in New York. In easily the thinnest trading of the week, the yellow metal moved [...]

US Mint Sales: 2011 Commemorative Coins Rally in Finish

0

US Mint 2011 Commemorative CoinsThe newest United States Mint sales figures show that 2011 commemorative coins enjoyed a mini-rally during their final days as did nearly every Presidential $1 coin product. With those excluded, however, overall product sales remained a bit soft like they were this time last year. Both years the Mint has imposed Christmas shipping deadlines of December 12. That tends to drive selling volumes earlier in the month with resulting sluggishness right before the holiday.

Another type of deadline hit this year's commemorative coins celebrating the U.S. Army and Medal of Honor. On Friday, December 16, the Mint stopped selling them after [...]

Precious Metals CommentaryNew York spot metals dealings opened mixed for the midweek session this morning.

Gold was down by $3 to start at the $1,612 mark on the bid-side, while silver was off by 16 cents at the $29.40 level. Gold's half-hearted rally underscores the difficulties on the technical side of its current paradigm and it also likely points to thinning levels of market participation underway on certain metals exchanges. The condition will only intensify as we head into the next two days' worth of trading action [...]
