Gold prices surged Thursday, rising for the first time in three days as the U.S. dollar weakened against other world currencies. The yellow metal jumped to over $1,340 an ounce as it rallied 1.5 percent.

Other precious metals followed. Platinum rose 0.8 percent while palladium added 1.7 percent. Silver outperformed them all, soaring 2.0 percent and briefly climbing above $24 an ounce [...]

The latest U.S. Mint sales figures show greater demand for bullion gold coins, clad sets and silver sets. On the other hand, bullion silver coins cooled slightly, as did interest in proof gold.

The 2009 DC & US Silver Quarters Proof Set has been a topic of interest in the last two Mint reports. 30-year high silver prices lifted the set's melt value to an all-time high of over $26, making the Mint's $29.95 price point a bargain [...]

More see-sawing was on display in overnight equities and commodities markets as pre-Fed calculations and sentiment extended the ebb and flow of the US dollar's movements on the index, which, in turn, shaped corresponding gyrations in other assets.

Markets shifted mostly lower Wednesday as speculation was abound that monetary easing measures by the Fed to boost the economy might be less than first expected or gradual in nature. The news propped the U.S. dollar, which further pressured gold and other commodities. The yellow metal fell 1.2 percent and to its lowest level in three weeks. Silver and platinum retreated further, falling 1.8 and 1.5 percent, respectively [...]

Coin collectors and admirers of the 16th President of the United States will have one more chance to attend a release ceremony for a coin dedicated to the man as the U.S. Mint plans to hold a public launch for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential $1 Coin on November 19, 2010.

The public invited ceremony will be held at President Lincoln's Cottage on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C. beginning at 10 AM (Eastern) [...]

Gold, oil and stocks were mostly unchanged on Tuesday. Gold fell early as a stronger U.S. dollar pressured prices, but the yellow metal reclaimed losses as investors bought on dips. Gold declined 30 cents for the day.
