British Virgin Islands Coins Commemorate Centenary of Naval Aviation

The Government of the British Virgin Islands has approved the release of a new coin to celebrate the Centenary of Naval Aviation.

On 7 May 1909, the Admiralty placed the first order for an aircraft specifically for use in military and naval operations. Little did they know that this single action would ultimately lead to them being one of the key players in the development of military and naval aviation around the world and to the eventual foundation of the Royal Air Force.

Despite initially trying to dissuade officers from following an aviation career, it was soon realised that those that took to the skies in those early days were not only adventurous and brave men but also pioneers in this new form of warfare. Read the rest of this entry »

2009 Isle of Man Christmas Angel Gold Coin

Every Christmas the Isle of Man releases a special 1/20oz Gold Angel of which only a limited number are struck. The privy mark on its reverse reflects the 12 Days of Christmas theme, which make the Angel Coin unique. This year the 2009 Christmas Angel design features both traditional and new design elements.

Vatu Coins Celebrate Reserve Bank of Vanuatu History

To celebrate their new headquarters, the Reserve Bank of Vanuatu has released a set of coins illustrating their historic development into independent banking through the growth of the building itself.

Vanuatu is an archipelago based in the South Pacific. It was first inhabited by Melanesian people but Europeans began to settle in the area in the late 18th century.

In the 1880s France and the United Kingdom claimed parts of the country and in 1906 they agreed on a framework for jointly managing the archipelago as the New Hebrides through a British-French Condominium.

Fake “Coins” of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands

Pobjoy Mint Ltd.The Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands has been alerted to the existence of a collection of nine metallic pieces depicting various UK places and which purport to be coins issued by this Administration. 

The obverse of these apparently Bi-Metallic pieces carries an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the wording South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands and the date 2008. 

Reverse images recorded are Chester Penny, Edinburgh, Horse Guards of London, Lincoln Cathedral, The Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, Westminster School, Windsor Castle, and York Castle Museum.

Between the end of the World War II and the establishment of the two German States, the FRG and the GDR, the base for the division of Germany were laid. Following a period when a large number of people crossed from East Germany to West, the GDR government feared the collapse of East Germany. Their answer was to erect a wall. Born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire in February 1809, Charles Darwin was born into a wealthy and well-connected family. Darwin had initially planned to study medicine at Edinburgh University but later switched to studying Divinity at Cambridge.

Best known for his theory on evolution, Charles Darwin was fundamental in discovering how all species of life developed from a central ancestor, changing the way we think about how we came to be as humans. He was a naturalist who searched the globe for new species of flora and fauna and he worked on his theory for 20 years, publishing the famous, ‘On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection’. It was a key moment in history when, on 21 July 1969, Neil Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin stepped off the Apollo 11 Lunar Lander and took their first steps on the Moon. Armstrong stepped off the Eagle and made his first steps on the moon famously describing it as "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

After spending 2 ½ hours on the surface of the moon, the astronauts went, leaving a number of things behind – an American Flag, a number of instruments they had used, a gold olive branch to represent peace and a silicone disk containing goodwill messages from Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and 73 Leaders of Countries around the world. Launch of First Commemorative British Indian Ocean Territory Coin

Ms Joanne YeadonMs Joanne Yeadon, Administrator of British Indian Ocean Territory recently visited the Pobjoy Mint to strike the first coin of the Territory.

This legal tender commemorative coin feature in highest quality relief the Coat of Arms of the Territory which was formally granted in 1990 on the 25th Anniversary of the Territory’s establishment.

The Arms consist of a shield bearing the Union Flag in the top quarter, a palm tree and St. Edward’s Crown in the middle half, with three white wavy lines representing the ocean in the bottom quarter. The two supporters are Turtles (Green and Hawksbill) representing the local native wildlife.

The crest consists of a Crown and Castle bearing the Territory’s flag. The motto in Latin is "In Tutela Nostra Limuria", in English this translates "Limuria is in our Trust" and refers to the non-existent continent of Limuria, once thought to occupy the Indian Ocean. Read the rest of this entry »
