In what is typically as picturesque a location as could be found, the United States Mint debuted Wyoming’s 2010 Yellowstone National Park Quarters to hundreds of gathered visitors today during a launch ceremony on the grounds of the Old Faithful Inn just steps away from the famous Old Faithful Geyser.

Old Faithful Geyser area
Park visitors wait on Old Faithful to erupt an hour prior to the Yellowstone quarter release ceremony, which was moved inside the Old Faithful Lodge Recreation Hall due to incremental weather. The famous geyser is depicted on the quarter’s reverse.

This coin marks the second release of the America the Beautiful Quarters™ Program which debuted earlier this year with the Hot Springs National Park Quarter from Arkansas.

The ceremony was scheduled to be held outdoors but owing to the inclement weather experienced there today, the function was moved inside to the Old Faithful Lodge Recreation Hall. Temperatures hovering in the forties with a drizzle in the air do not make for pleasant event conditions.

2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof SetThe United States Mint today at noon Eastern Time released the 2010 United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set™ for $32.95.

The offering is the first to include America the Beautiful Quarters that are struck in 90 percent silver, which is a reason the set is priced substantially higher than the clad quarters version that launched on May 13, 2010 for $14.95.

In fact, the silver set’s five proof coins are composed of 0.904 ounces of silver. At the current silver spot of $18.47 an ounce, their intrinsic value alone is presently worth $16.70.

The United States Mint this morning released production figures for the Hot Springs National Park Quarter — the first issue in the new America the Beautiful Quarters™ Program.

The mintage total for the quarter is 59.6 million, with 29 million struck in Denver and 30.6 million from Philadelphia.

While the U.S. Mint clearly indicates that the numbers are preliminary and that the final ones will be issued in January 2011, the current levels represent the lowest of any quarter in decades — from either Mint facility.

Coin production has plunged in parallel with the American economic downturn, but did begin to somewhat pick up in April. More coins were struck during the month than in any other in 2010. It was also the first time that any nickels had been minted since July 2009.
