U.S. gold prices rose 1.3 percent and peaked toward a three-week high Wednesday, but it was silver that led the percentage gains among the major metals with its 2.5 percent increase.
Gold prices gained $21.60 to $1,682.60 an ounce in the December futures contract on the Comex in New York. Gold moved between an intraday low of $1,662.00 and a high of $1,693.90 -- its highest point since September 23 [...]
US Mint Sales: Silver Products Return, Hayes Dollar Covers Debut
Buyers opted to hand out more money for coins last week as 63 United States Mint products outperformed their previous weekly gains, the latest sales figures from the bureau revealed.
Friday's returning silver coins and sets helped raise sales, although some silver products again had their totals cut lower than shown in the previous Mint sales report. The 2011-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle led those declines, dropping 424 to 182,100.
Improving silver products included the 2011-W Proof American Silver Eagle, the 2011 Silver Proof Set and one of the collector five-ounce coins, as highlighted by the Mint's top seven selling numismatic products [...]
In The Lead – New Coke
Did anything material change in the Old World? Not the last time we checked.
What we did check was the Kitco Live Spot price indicators however. They showed gold opening with a gain of $25 at $1,688 the ounce and silver started the midweek session off with a three-quarter dollar rise to the $32.89 level.
The big gainer on the day was platinum, which showed a $30 lift to $1,544 while palladium added $9 and climbed to the $611 mark. It is being anticipated that [...]
US Mint May Hike Prices on Collector Gold and Commemorative Coins
As a result of higher trending gold, prices for United States Mint collector gold and commemorative coins may increase Wednesday, October 12.
If price hikes occur, they would mark a sixth straight week that the Mint has adjusted prices for its collector gold coins. But moving coins higher would also break a streak of four straight weeks where prices had been cut [...]

Gold Edges 0.6% Lower, Silver Prices Advance 0.1%
Gold futures retreated nearly $10 Tuesday, slicing away almost one-third of the previous day's gains as investors awaited a Slovakian vote on approving the European Union bailout fund.
"There is an incredible amount of headline risk at the moment because of the unclarity behind all the news out of the EU that may underpin gold or cause gold to sell off," Reuters quoted Fred Schoenstein, precious metals trader of Heraeus Precious Metals Management. "There is no real clear direction in which gold should trade."
Gold prices declined $9.80, or 0.6 percent, to settle at $1,661.00 an ounce in the [...]

US Mint September 2011 Coin Production Rises 34.2%
The amount of circulating coins coming out of the United States Mint surged last month, according to September coin production figures released by the government agency. The increase snaps two-straight monthly declines.
Mintages were not revealed for James Garfield Presidential dollars or Chickasaw National Recreational Area quarters, the final 2011-dated coins set to enter circulation this year. The numbers do indicate, however, that the United States Mint is busy striking the Garfield dollars which are scheduled to launch November 17 [...]
Odyssey Finds Silver-Laden SS Gairsoppa Shipwreck
Odyssey Marine Exploration, based in Tampa, Florida, announced the find of the silver-laden, British-flagged SS Gairsoppa.
Some 300 miles off the coast of Ireland in international waters, the shipwreck site is located approximately 4,700 meters (almost 3 miles) below the surface, making the pending recovery one of the most complex operations ever undertaken.
At stake is an estimated 7 million ounces of silver, but the silver was just part of the cargo carried by the SS Gairsoppa when she was sunk [...]

U.S. gold and silver prices closed lower Friday but previous daily pick-ups combined to snap four-week losing streaks as gold advanced 0.8 percent and silver gained 3.0 percent.
Gold was pressured Friday, said analysts, as investors sold the yellow metal to meet margin calls. Gold prices declined $17.40, or 1.1 percent, to settle at $1,635.80 an ounce in the December futures contract on the Comex in New York. Prices ranged from an intraday low of $1,627.60 to a high of $1,668.00 [...]
