Gold Eagle Coin Bullion Sales at 10-Year High

The US Mint's recent actions to temporarily suspend production of collectible 2009 gold and silver American Eagle coins in order to produce their bullion counterparts is, to say the least, annoying to many coin collectors. Worst of all, it could be many months before the collector coins are offered since bullion coin sales are off to their quickest pace in 10 years.

The collector community may be able to empathize somewhat by stepping back from emotion over the Mint directives and instead focus on the reality -- and the biggest angst that has driven many recent Mint decisions, the "unprecedented demand" for gold coins.

2009 American Eagle Gold Coins Suspended

2009 American Eagle Gold Bullion CoinProof and uncirculated 2009 American Eagle Gold Coins are temporarily suspended, the United States Mint is now announcing in the latest statement from its online store.

The coins are struck for collectors and include the "W" mintmark, unlike the 2009 bullion versions intended for investors -- although many coin collectors purchase them -- and already available through the Mint's authorized purchasers, coin dealers and precious metals sellers.

Lincoln Commemorative Dollars are still the hottest US Mint collector coins, but sales have cooled somewhat compared to prior weeks. The proof and uncirculated dollar numbers increased 14.1 percent and 12.4 percent, respectively, versus last week's reported 45.9 percent and 35.1 percent surge.

The latest US Mint sales figures show 45,534 more Lincoln silver dollars have been purchased for a total of 380,585 since they were first offered on Feb. 12.

2009 Montreal Canadiens Centennial one-dollar coin launchMONTREAL — After a century of dazzling legions of hockey fans, the Montreal Canadiens are themselves feeling pride and excitement at the Royal Canadian Mint's official introduction of the 2009 Montreal Canadiens Centennial one-dollar commemorative circulation coin.

The coin was unveiled today [March 10] at Montreal's Bell Centre by Montreal Canadiens President Pierre Boivin and Royal Canadian Mint President and CEO Ian E. Bennett.

The Mint also unveiled a limited-edition Montreal Canadiens Centennial proof silver dollar enhanced with touches of selective gold plating, and presented two of these precious keepsakes to Canadiens Official Ambassadors Henri Richard and Réjean Houle.
