US Mint Sales: Steve Jobs California $1 Hits 1.17M, Unavailable

Rolls and bags of the California Innovation dollar featuring Steve Jobs and a Liberty Bell "250" privy mark proved popular, becoming unavailable soon after launch. They also filled four of the top five spots in the United States Mint’s weekly sales report. Only the Warren G. Harding Presidential Silver Medal placed higher, though the California dollar products represented far more coins sold.

Released May 13 at $164, the 1-ounce .999 fine silver medal honoring the 29th U.S. president opened with sales of 10,352. That start was slightly below the previous issue, the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Silver Medal, which launched March 19 and opened at 10,525, though its latest total has since fallen to 8,902. Early sales figures for this series often see sizable downward revisions during the first few reporting cycles before settling into more modest week-to-week changes.

Last year’s Presidential silver medals include issues for William H. Taft, Theodore Roosevelt, William McKinley, and Benjamin Harrison. They opened with sales of 10,596, 11,115, 10,207, and 12,471, respectively, while their latest totals stand at 10,364, 12,821, 10,721, and 10,666. The Harrison opening total is somewhat overstated because its first reported sales figure was delayed by two weeks. Medals issued last year also carried a much lower introductory price of $90.

California Innovation Dollar Sales Near Product Limits

Released May 12 in U.S. Mint-branded rolls and bags, the California Innovation dollar opened with combined sales of 1,172,450 coins — the strongest start for the series in recent years, helped by slightly higher product limits. Shortly after the release, the Mint listed the products as "Currently Unavailable" and added "Remind Me" options for alerts if more become available.

As with other coins released this year featuring Semiquincentennial-themed elements, more would have sold had availability lasted longer.

Here is how the California dollar’s product limits compared with reported sales through May 17:

• 2026-P 25-Coin Rolls — 9,435 sold; 9,600 limit
• 2026-D 25-Coin Rolls — 8,351 sold; 8,550 limit
• 2026-P 100-Coin Bags — 3,767 sold; 4,000 limit
• 2026-D 100-Coin Bags — 3,511 sold; 3,800 limit

2026 Proof Gold Buffalo Tops Earlier Issues — Price Drops

Behind the new medal and four California Innovation dollar products, the 1776 ~ 2026-W Proof American Gold Buffalo ranked next in sales. The 24-karat gold coin launched May 7 at $5,540, with last week’s report showing debut sales of 9,865. During its first full week, it advanced another 1,203 to 11,068, or 73.8% of its 15,000 mintage.

The privy-marked coin outpaced last year’s release from the start, with its 11,068 total well above the 2025-W Proof Gold Buffalo’s latest tally of 7,855. It now also leads the 2014-dated issue, which rose 13 to 10,583.

Mid-last week, the coin’s price was adjusted up $100 to $5,640. It has since moved down to $5,490, its lowest price yet.

2026 Congratulations Set / 2026-P Proof Silver Eagle Nears Limit

Ranking seventh was the 2026 Congratulations Set, which includes the 2026-P Proof American Silver Eagle. Last week’s report showed the set jumping by 18,995 to 59,060 and taking the No. 1 spot. Released Feb. 26, it lasted only minutes before depleted inventory led the Mint to mark it unavailable. Its return was measured in days, with the set most recently rising another 555 to 59,615 before becoming unavailable again as sales pressed closer to its 60,000 mintage.

Priced at $175, the set contains the first standard, non-privy Philadelphia Proof American Silver Eagle since 2000. Its mintage is far below the 500,000 authorized for this year’s dual-dated West Point proof.

In its latest report, the Mint published sales data for 651 numismatic products. Five new products opened with sales above 1,000 units, while one existing product posted a week-over-week gain of more than 1,000 units, matching the prior report.

Sales momentum eased, with 70 products outpacing their prior weekly gains, down from 95 in the previous report. Earlier totals were 67, 29, 72, 77, 34, 80, 74, 57, 39, 87, 70, 56, 43, 79, 23, and 106.

Products Posting Declines

Twelve products registered week-over-week declines, up from 10 in the prior reporting period. Those with declines of more than three included:
