The biggest excitement for many coin collectors last week was the United States Mint’s release of the 250th Anniversary Army 2025-W Proof American Silver Eagle. The Mint’s decision to reduce the household order limit from three to one proved wise, as it allowed more buyers a chance to purchase the privy-marked coin.
Opened for pre-sale on the 13th at noon ET, the limited-edition coin – capped at 100,000 – became unavailable after about three and a half hours.
According to the Mint’s latest data, sales through the 15th reached 78,966. That figure reflects individual sales to collectors under product code 25APM and excludes orders placed through the Mint’s bulk purchase programs. No total has been published for those channels, and CoinNews is awaiting a response from the Mint.
Stronger Product Sales Overall
Elsewhere, the U.S. Mint continues to report solid demand across many of its products, with week-over-week gains nearing the triple-digit mark for five consecutive weeks. Last week still saw 89 products outperform their previous weekly gains, although that was down from the prior week’s total of 120 products posting stronger increases.

Interesting sales numbers. I question why people would wait to buy precious metal collector coins after the prices go up. The sales of platinum and palladium are still quite healthy considering the rise in the price for those items over the last month. You could have gotten the platinum proofs at a significant savings just a few weeks ago. On the roll searching front, I picked up 16 rolls of halves a couple weeks ago. The rolls were consumer wrapped (folded ends), so I didn’t know what to expect. One roll was all 1974 Halves. None were 74D double dies.… Read more »
Nice score!
I stopped over 10 years ago because of lackluster/no results from boxes. But, I never asked for customer wrapped rolls. You never know I guess. The submitter must’ve not known better.
“The Mint’s decision to reduce the household order limit from three to one proved wise, as it allowed more buyers a chance to purchase the privy-marked coin.”
Spot on, Mr. Unser.
But, we will hear this was bad and hurts the APbb biguns….
Agree Reb. And thank goodness I did get one!

I got a box of halves at my Wells Fargo. Zero silver, but picked up album worthy 2021 D &P, 2020 P, 2019 D, and an excellent 1981 P replacement.
Haven’t found any silver for YEARS
I always ask for halves anything odd. Rarely get anything these days. Wells and BoA think you’re spying for Willie Sutton whe u ask for rolls…
DaveSWFL – I usually ask if they have any Halves or two dollar bills whenever I go to the bank, which is every 4 to 6 weeks. It’s always funny because when they have some they ask how many I want, and I respond with How many do you have? I always get everything they have. Good to see you find some recent date keepers.
REB said, previous thread: “FOUND THE SESQUI! SB sold it in November 2024 for $7800.” Since you’d mentioned packaging previously, you might find this excerpt of interest, from the CWeek article titled: “1926 American Sesquicentennial Quarter Eagle : A Collector’s Guide”? Also, apparently this coin has also been counterfeited, with a couple examples being noted. Even though your more than likely are most interested in OGP vs aftermarket, it’s still an interesting tidbit of numismatic history IMO. “The quarter eagle was distributed without holders at the Exposition, but additional coins were marketed through the Franklin Trust Company of Philadelphia in… Read more »

The story gets curiouser and curiouser. I may hit the brakes on my two potential purchases until I get a better bead on things. I know sellers have the right to sell at whatever level they want, but I was kind of put off by the unwillingness to deal when the difference was $2k. If that difference had been 20-30% of the deal, that’s wholly understandable. But at less than 3%, I’m left scratching my head.
Oh well, tomorrow is another day … to buy coins.
Thanks for the article, Cali. It was an interesting read. I’d love to see those two “unofficial” holders.
REB, you’re welcome re: the CW article! I composed a reply which is caught up in “awaiting approval” purgatory! Definitely hit the brakes on both that 1795 and 1926. In a nutshell, I say pass on both the 1795 and 1926 from Charleston RC. Also, I say take a pass on that 1795 MS61 at SB as well. The missing denticles and weak strike are too unappealing IMO. Best of luck either way, however you decide to play this hand! Coins with better eye appeal are in your future, I can feel it! Be patient my friend as you deserve… Read more »
Interesting, picked up one years ago, a 62. Seems like <63runs for a lot of these. 66 more expense than you would think for a 1920s commemorative issue.
Appeared in WSJ June 20, 2025, print edition as ‘Industrial Demand Spurs Silver Rally’. (entire article) Surging Silver Prices Prompt Americans to Empty Jewelry Boxes and Coin Jars Strong industrial demand brings the precious metal’s highest price levels in more than a decade Gold gets all the glory, but silver prices have surged nearly as much this year, up 27% to the highest levels in more than a decade. As with gold, jittery investors are scooping up the precious metal, but silver prices are getting an extra jolt from strong industrial demand, especially from solar-panel makers. Unlike gold,… Read more »
Well, Bunky (AI [AI changes to “AL” wtf] hates Bunky, as well, auto correct 3x….moronic) anyway, I made a ton back in 1980. $200 makes Au $4,000 “historically” but It seems to get Ag over $50 will take $4,500-$5k gold…
(part 2) In 2011, silver prices shot up again in a speculative mania, reaching $47.99, which is about $69 now. Just like in 1980, they plunged nearly as quickly as they rose. Investors lately are betting silver prices have higher to go. The iShares Silver Trust, an exchange-traded fund that holds silver bars and is popular with individual investors, has added nearly 11 million ounces of silver this year to keep up with demand, according to fund documents. Others are opting to own silver directly. Andrei Hnedchyk, owner of Honest Coin Shop in Union City, N.J., said traffic… Read more »

“My Big Boy friend says it is an ‘inventory’ issue. I say it is an ‘opportunity cost’ issue.
That is the difference between sales terminology and finance terminology.”
On the Silver side of business, the above partial article, is the ‘inventory’ issue that was posed by my friend.
It is NOT on the buying side of Silver.
It IS on the selling side of Silver…
Thanks for the article posts Cag.
TPGs are currently facing significant challenges. The two major TPG firms are now under the management of Wall Street. Business operations on Wall Street differ significantly from those on Main Street, particularly in terms of leverage usage, which is considerably higher on Wall Street. While this approach often proves successful, there are instances where it does not yield the desired results. In many cases, price guides are effective; however, there are situations where they fail to reflect accurate values. Specifically, the current price guide may not be functioning properly depending on the coin in question. Furthermore, grading standards at a… Read more »
Your opinion, or a summary of research?
Private ownership increases insiders and incestuous relationships w other$ allowed to flourish and absorb middleman upgrade $$$. I have previously espoused that going private has somehow seemingly IMO, led to looser standards particularly on 19th Century and some recent issues, you get a 70…. U get a 70, you Rick (AI changed to Rock, why???} y’all get a 69 sorry there was a lint scratch, scratch….
70,for most modern USM issues,is akin to a 65or 66 decades ago. A 63 % wise for the classic Morgan $. Dan O’Dowd buy them!!!!
Cag can you please possibly elaborate on how a decrease in silver prices, would translate to less of a challenge or better odds of receiving a 70 grade for regular customers? Everything else you wrote, is kind of hard to debate IMO and more or less appears to be a harsh reality. It’s unfortunate that unless you’re a dealer or spend thousands w/the TPG’s it seems to be tough for the average Joe to submit and receive desired or earned 70 grades. Just crazy though to think the average Joe wanting slabbed 70’s has to pay the significant premiums over… Read more »
“Cag can you please possibly elaborate on how a decrease in silver prices, would translate to less of a challenge or better odds of receiving a 70 grade for regular customers?” TPG’s business model works well in stable or slightly fluctuating markets but struggles with the current rapid rise in Silver prices. This has caused an imbalance between buyers and sellers, particularly in graded coins where sellers dominate. Bullion sales remain unaffected. Lower Silver prices could help rebalance the market. Currently, smaller submitters find it harder to get a 70 grade due to TPG’s inventory mismatch. Lowering the price of… Read more »
See your point CAG, but hoping for lower silver spot prices to obtain higher “perfect” grading scores from TPGs is a somewhat irrational pursuit. With expanding industrial consumption of silver, and increased investment demand, an upward trend for the foreseeable future is obvious. Yes, the Wall Street owned TPGs has changed the playing field, with the resurgence of ANACS, expansion of CAC, and even more IGC in the marketplace. While your observations are spot on, other than lowering expectations of individual submitters, I don’t see any way to apply your concerns, kind of like the old sayings of useless information… Read more »
“it is advisable to purchase one online or establish a strong customer relationship with the grading firm”… I’ll place that under advisement and shelf it for now because it comes across as a Big Boy sales pitch, just me and maybe I’m off? As a ‘regular customer’, I will maintain my strong relationship with the TPG of my choosing, and I fully expect that I’ll continue to get 70 grades on my ASE submissions 90% of the time, whether in good or bad market conditions, high or low Ag prices – doesn’t matter imo. So far PCGS has graded approx… Read more »
Both of the Big TPG’s have their strong suits. PCGS dominates the Rarities markets, and NGC has the advantage in the Foreign coin markets, not to mention the modern stuff(Annual set coins, etc) – opinion. There is a migration going on with regard to switching/trying out CACG, and I’m one of them. The Price Guides are just that – a Guide. “The prices listed in the PCGS Price Guide are average dealer asking prices for PCGS-graded coins.” More often than not those prices are higher than what the actual market decides, but not always… Tonight, I won a coin in an auction… Read more »

I got the 1854-S Dollar today. What a tiny coin! It’s got to be the smallest one yet, even smaller than the 1/10 ounce eagle. By weight and size, it may be the second most expensive coin in my collection after the 1861-D Half Eagle. It’s pretty and lives up to its MS-63 reputation. The black spot looks like the tip of a star. The date is lighter than the other elements on the reverse, but it is visible to the naked eye. It’s not as light as the famed Charlotte ghost “C” but you have to squint. Overall, I’m… Read more »
Congrats!!! I recently picked up a 1854 type 2 $1 gold coin to continue on my type gold series. I love the $1.00 type 2 & 3 obverse. If you like squinting, California fractional gold has a lot to offer too. : )
LOL!
Congrats REB, another great coin.
I was going to get on you to consider a restorative countermeasure for the coin, but I’ve already said my piece. Besides, this is a celebration – job well done!
Guru they have some interesting holders nowadays for those pesky little guys…
This seems to be a coin tailor-made for a metal detector. It’s hard to believe that many of these didn’t get lost out of pockets over the years.
Awesome, the one type of ‘affordable’ pre 33 I do not own. There are some Ty III at decent prices in better grades. Try a nice 10x…..
FYI… The 2024 Silver Proof Sets have been available for most of today. At least 23 sets were available when I looked earlier, just after 7:30 am EST. Cali,
The $108K 1964 Kennedy Half shown above was one of the 1964 SMS Kennedys. Only 5-6 of these are known to exist. There may be a few more out there. That is the Grand Poohbah of all the Kennedy Half Dollars.
Rick,

Copy that on the 4 Bro.
Cheers

“It was initially reported that 15 sets were produced in total, but as more 1964 Special Mint Set coinage appears, that figure has since been revised upwards to 50.”
