The fourth of five quarters created for America’s 250th anniversary begins making its way into circulation today, as the United States Mint starts shipping the new 1776 ~ 2026 U.S. Constitution quarter to Federal Reserve Banks.
From there, the coins will move through the nation’s banking system to commercial banks and financial institutions and eventually appear in everyday transactions.
This year’s five-quarter lineup includes:
- Mayflower Compact (entered circulation Jan. 5)
- Revolutionary War (entered circulation March 23)
- Declaration of Independence (entered circulation June 1)
- U.S. Constitution (entered circulation Aug. 10)
- Gettysburg Address (later in 2026)
All five designs are being issued only in 2026 for the nation’s Semiquincentennial, with each entering circulation in sequence.
U.S. Constitution Quarter Designs
James Madison, the fourth U.S. president, appears on the new coin’s obverse. Often called the "Father of the Constitution" for his role in shaping its framework and advocating for its ratification, he is shown with the inscriptions E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST and the anniversary dual date 1776 ~ 2026.
Former U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program artist Joel Iskowitz designed the portrait, while former Mint Medallic Artist Don Everhart sculpted it.
The reverse shifts the setting to Independence Hall in Philadelphia, linking the Constitution quarter visually and historically with the preceding Declaration of Independence issue. The Liberty Bell depicted on that earlier quarter was housed at the building, where delegates debated and signed both founding documents.
Above Independence Hall is WE THE PEOPLE, the opening phrase of the Constitution. Other inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, U.S. CONSTITUTION and QUARTER DOLLAR. The design is intended to evoke the constitutional principle that government derives its authority from the people. Donna Weaver designed the reverse, and Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill sculpted it.
Circulation-quality quarters are produced at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints with their respective P and D mint marks. The Mint began producing the Constitution quarter for circulation in April, but only 3 million had been struck through May, with none reported in June. Production was expected to ramp up in July, though those figures have not yet been released.

Constitution Quarter Rolls and Bags for Collectors
Collectors will get another route to the coins later this month. On Aug. 26, the Mint will begin selling Constitution quarters through its website in a two-roll set containing Philadelphia and Denver coins for $56, along with separate 100-coin bags from each facility priced at $63.
Rolls and bags for the first three 2026 Semiquincentennial quarters moved quickly, becoming unavailable soon after their releases.
Additional Semiquincentennial circulating coins for 2026 include a redesigned dime without Franklin D. Roosevelt’s portrait and a redesigned half dollar without John F. Kennedy’s portrait, along with other denominations featuring dual-dated or commemorative elements tied to the anniversary.
