Last week, the United States Mint released two coins for collectors – the 2025 Kennedy half dollar and the proof 2025 American Buffalo gold coin. Each was a top seller for the Mint.
Two-roll sets and 200-coin bags of 2025 John F. Kennedy half dollars launched May 6. Featuring circulating-quality coins from the Denver and Philadelphia Mints, early sales totaled 2,252,760 coins, with product splits of 6,246 bags and 25,089 two-roll sets. That ranks as the fourth-best start in recent years, trailing early totals from:

- 2024: 2,391,000 coins
By comparison, earlier annual starts were lower:

I’ve heard rumors that this will be the last year of the Kennedy Half Dollar as we know it. The reverse is going to change???? I don5 know for sure what the rumor is actually, only that it’s changing. Have others heard similar rumors/fact? If so, I wonder how many bags/rolls will be purchased on just speculation of their future value. Might be a good idea for some and it’s not a lot of money either. My Gold spot price is slowly dropping 🙁 However, the price dropped $50 today for the Proof Buffalo today which is nice (kinda) for… Read more »
AKBob, not a rumor and this year will be the end of the JFK Half dollars as we currently know it. 2025 is definitively the last year of the 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar design as we’ve known it for the last 60+ years. The 2026 Half Dollar will not contain a likeness of John F Kennedy in any way, shape or form. Also an additional heads up for next years subscriptions for the $.50 half dollars celebrating the Sestercentennial. 2027 will begin the “Paralympic Sport Half Dollar” designs, through 2030. Ironic you mention that Major D? I had forgotten myself that next years Sestercentennial half dollar would not have Kennedy on the obverse. Not until the CN article(5/6/25) announcing the release of this years Kennedy and doing a little research did I remember. Time flies whether you’re having fun or not. Haha In my mind, I pictured a Kennedy obverse with a Liberty Bell/250 privy, which is what I’d have actually preferred vs the chosen design.
“I had forgotten myself that next years Sestercentennial half dollar would not have Kennedy on the obverse.”
Same here,
Cali, Thank you! Great info there!! I see that I actually posted on that article but I had just forgotten. That’s probably why I thot I heard a “rumor”, lol! I remember things fairly well still but at times I know the answer “if” I have a multiple choice or something that “triggers” my memory about it. No big deal. im NOT a Kennedy collector…………yet! Once I finish my Gold Sets I’m putting together and I see what I may or may not purchase next year with the “old” designs, I’m interested in those gold releases, like most other collectors… Read more »

“The USM Kennedy 2025 Half Dollar Two Roll Set:
Item Number: 25KB
Item Limits
Mintage Limit: None
*Product Limit: 26,250
Household Order Limit: None”
Today:
In the previous thread Rick relayed from the Circulating Coin Production report the U.S. mint publishes, regarding the 2025 Kennedy Half dollars: “Kennedy Half Dollars D 5,600,000 P 8,200,000 Tot. 13,800,000”. Mike Unser’s article relayed that: “Featuring circulating-quality coins from the Denver and Philadelphia Mints, early sales totaled 2,252,760 coins, with product splits of 6,246 bags and 25,089 two-roll sets.”(from sales report numbers through 5/11/25) The USM and Rick’s post indicate that the 2 roll set have a maximum product limit of 26,250. Rick’s last post showed, there are just 457(5/15/25), 2025 Kennedy 2-roll sets left. This is down from… Read more »
Well Major D, with 21.5 million 2024 Kennedy Half dollars produced, there are more than enough to go around and why buy from them from the Mint, at inflated premiums, if you don’t have to? Plus with the bags, shipping and handling, the coins end up with more bangin’ and clangin’, acquiring bag marks, scratches, gouges, dents and dings! Also, maybe you should crunch your own guesstimate on number of coins sold per day and hour, how many theoretically are left, rolls intended for circulation, etc, then get back to us on what you discover that is of statistical significant… Read more »

Not a Kennedy half collector, but I am signed up for the Unc set, silver set, Already have the proof set for this last year of Kennedy and maybe penny. Question, is the finish on the Unc set Kennedy different than what would be found on the rolls or bags? Also, Cali, please explain the subscription order not available in 2027 and is required to be done in 2026. ( if I read your comment right). Thanks
East Coast, the finish is the same in rolls, bags, Uncirculated Sets, as well as those intended for circulation. To clarify my above comment. If you go to the subscription page for the Kennedy Half dollar, it reads: “Next Product in Subscription: Kennedy 2027 Half Dollar Two-Roll Set, Ships 2027 (Subscriptions will not be offered in 2026)” This means “no subscriptions”’ for the Half Dollar or at least Kennedy Half Dollars, since there won’t be one offered in 2026. I suppose the Mint could possibly roll out a subscription page or offering for the 2026 Sestercentennial Half Dollars down the… Read more »
That Q&A is dated. And I respectfully disagree with you. “Uncirculated Coins:” above has everything to do with Collectable “Burnished” ASE & AGE’s, and has Nothing to do with the Circulating Kennedy Half Dollars that Guru mentions, which by the way are now always released to the Federal Reserve Bank. The Circulating Quality Business Strike Kennedys(Unc Mint Sets, Rolls, Bags, Boxes, & $500 Fed Bank Boxes are all from the exact same planchets, struck with the same Die’s, with the same finish. They are all treated the same before being packaged. Cali is correct. However, the Unc Mint set coins… Read more »
Actually Major D, if you are referring to the satin coins contained in the 2005-2010 U.S. Mint Uncirculated Sets, the TPG’s do distinguish a difference. Those years, you will find Proof/PF, Circulation AKA MS and the satin finished coins from those mint sets as being graded and given an SP designation. So one could have 2005-2010 slabs with a graded coin being designated as PF, MS or SP. PCGS PCGS Grading: PCGS uses the grade SP for uncirculated coins that don’t meet the standards for Proof coins, but still have a higher quality of finish than business strike coins. This… Read more »
In all fairness Major D, this subject is even confusing for PCGS. If you look within their own site, or through using an internet search engine, one can find references to “SF”, regarding Satin Finish. Yet I’ve never seen or can I find mention of slabbed coins with an “SF”designation? I wasn’t able to find any actual listing or reference to the years 2005-2010 getting the SP designation, and PCGS states that SP is used for “Specimen”: Term used to indicate special coins struck at the Mint from 1792-1816 that display many characteristics of the later Proof coinage. Prior to… Read more »

Beautiful coins E1! Only 4 coins graded higher, a solo 68+ and 3 SP69’s. Nice work!
Thanks Cali.
Cheers
Rick, regarding the Uncirculated “Burnished” ASE & AGE (and Platinum Eagle, Palladium Eagle, and Gold Buffalo) coins, it is interesting that PCGS uses SP (Special Strike) to designate these coins, while NGC, CAC and ANACS use the MS (Mint State) designation. To add to this discussion, the US Mint’s Coin Term Glossary for “Uncirculated” and “Mint State” provide these descriptions: Uncirculated: The term “uncirculated” may have three different meanings when applied to a coin: It can refer to the particular manufacturing process by which a coin is made It can be used as a grade when referring to a coin’s… Read more »
Rich, you bring up an interesting point? Perhaps I’m missing something, however the only difference I see between a bullion burnished (W) American Silver Eagle and a W American Silver Eagle Uncirculated burnished, is the latter has the W mint mark on the reverse whereas the bullion (W) is, sans W mint mark. Both coins appear to me to have the same satiny, finish and in my eyes, both should have the same strike designation. Either both should be regular strike and given the MS distinction or they both should be Special Strike SP, because they appear to have the… Read more »
Gents, thank you for the feedback on the Kennedy Unc set finish. I asked as I was wondering if I should pick up the Kennedy two roll set or not. Decisions decisions.
There is without a doubt a difference between Std Bullion and Burnished Bullion with the planchet prep, tone/soft-grain, and the depth of strike.
It’s hard to convey in photos due to light and focus, but here is a 2009-P Bullion, and and a 2007-W Burnished ASE side by side.
.
Thanks Rich,
About once a year this UNC, MS, SP debate crops back up, and gets parsed & pulverized to death. However someone, somewhere learns something new each time.
I’ve got to hand it to that Horse though, he’s been beat to death so many times, and he just gets’ back up every time, amazing!
.
Almost like the old warhorse on the 1995 Civil War Battlefield gold commemorative.
Yeah I think I remember the “uncirculated” discussion before. I wonder if the glossary is really binding and the U.S. Mint follows what the say in the glossary (i.e. coining force and early strikes). I think the conclusion was it if it was true, it is not easy to distinguish and the TPGs I don’t think recognize it. I was seeking the opposite thing last year. I couldn’t find the “rare” circulating 2024-D nickel (still in the millions), so I got a 2024 Mint Set on the basis the included D nickel that it was indistinguishable from the circulating D… Read more »
Yes, the Glossary is dated and contradictory to TPG’s in part? That ‘special packaging’ doesn’t guarantee a nice Gem coin(s). Fed Roll searching can net those great coins, and patience is key. Many collectors go that route for the fun, and Top Pops.
I recall that DaveSWFL was disappointed with his 2024 UNC Mint Set/Nickels?
E1 buys several different UNC examples from various sellers & regions, and cherry-picks for his Albums. Smart.
