The 2025 Proof Set climbed past 220,000 to once again lead United States Mint sales for the week. Meanwhile, rolls and bags with the new Juliette Gordon Low quarter moved in the opposite direction.
Five U.S. Mint products logged declines, two more than the prior week. One dipped only slightly. The Low quarter saw the sharpest drop – not unexpected for a product settling in after release. Sales of Juliette Gordon Low quarters fell by 114,460 to a new total of 1,820,340. Issued March 25, the coin is the seventeenth release in the Mint’s four-year series celebrating American women, which wraps up this year.

On a previous thread when I was discussing the Dismal sales of American Gold Eagle bullion coins, John Q. Coinage asked: “Cag have you any #$ on say Mplf and Other sales, Krand silver….” There are no numbers yet released for Q12025. There are numbers released for CY2024 that shows the year/year trend of just how Dismal Gold bullion sales are in the United States vs. bullion sales for the rest of the world. Sales of gold coins and bars in the U.S. decreased by 33% from CY23 to CY24. Year-over-year sales of gold coins and gold bars, excluding… Read more »
Not sure I see a problem here. Based on your numbers, Americans are not buying physical gold for their own possession as they used to. Instead, they are buying gold ETF’s, in which the ETF funds are buying the gold bullion and taking possession. Again, not sure I see a problem unless there is something I am missing.
East Coast Guru,
Not purchasing Gold from the United States Mint is the problem. ETFs don’t purchase Gold from the United States Mint.
Thank you. Still not seeing the problem. If the US Mint does not sell gold to ETF’s, and the mint wants to sell more gold, then perhaps their pricing is out of step with the market, or their sales team needs to up their game trying to win some new gold contracts or they need to do something else. If the mint gold sales falls to the floor, well, things happen and we move on. It’s not the end of the world.
Thanks Cag, interesting and change of habits/investment strategies, myself themETFs offer a piece of the action but still I would buy physical, but at these levels it’s hard for me to. Guru seems accurate the USM pricing is not attractive v. Other major world mints and the locals are, preferring ETFs …and Cag I thought you wanted USM to halt gold sales❓
John Q. Coinage
“and Cag I thought you wanted USM to halt gold sales”
Absolutely.
I have advocated that position for years and years and years.
I wanted the Mint to get out of the Gold business with a position of strength. The Mint has, for the past three years, trended out from a position of weakness.
Same results for the Mint.
Different results for the collector.
Long overdue from an investment point of view…
Best I can tell, ETFs do not own all the physical gold that backs their “investment product”, they lease gold from various central banks around the world, to include the US holdings, leased by the FED….I consider ETFs nothing more than Bitcoin, etc…..Wall Street has found a way to cash in on commodities. Lots of “experts” state that when all the physical gold claimed to be in possession of Central Banks around the world is totaled, then all stated physical gold backing ETFs is added, exceeded known physical gold in existence is surpassed. I am sure what is in my… Read more »
And yet… “A Historic Gold Rush Is Under Way, From Wall Street to Main Street” – The Wall Street Journal, April 24, 2025.
Rich,
Yes. I subscribe to the WSJ.
Americans are buying Gold.
Just not from the U.S. Mint.
Demand destruction, the USM has priced itself on a pedestal above, others w higher and higher premiums, lower and lower mintages….as predicted
“Americans are buying Gold.”
Case in point: My 83 year old mother, who doesn’t trust the Gov, Banks, or Wall st(a different conversation…), recently came across some cash via an investment property sale. I tried to convince her to get some ETFs, at least in part, she refused and wanted all physical.
24 Krugerrands, 91 Maple Leafs, and 1000 ASE’s later(not including previous stacks), from a local bullion dealer. She says it’s sitting in the garage(for 3 weeks now), and she wants to bury some of it, literally….
Needless to say, my Sis and I are getting concerned about her. Why? One reason is her memory is giving out. She, as a part time stacker, it’s not ideal. Last year she put a couch out on the sidewalk(free), a neighbor picked it up, and promptly gave her the 1oz Gold coin that she stashed(forgot) inside a pillow case. Nice guy. We went to help her inventory her stack, and helped do some chores. When done, we found a pile of cash under a carpet runner –oops, I forgot…
Then, grabbing a tool in the garage, we found 3 rolls of 1/10 oz AGE’s(15oz’s)under a rag — oops, I forgot…
Me and my BIL are going to see her next week, I’m driving & he’s flying. And sadly, it might be one of those “take the car keys” away moments. I’m dreading it. We’re going to give her some ideas on how to stealthily store some of it, and take some with for safe keeping, she’ll need it soon enough.
She did give us the 3 x 1/10 oz rolls as a gift. Nice lady…
Rick,
Sorry to hear about your Mom’s state of health. My late Mom was also affected by Alzheimers disease so I know what you and your family are going through. I have to say with her penchant for gold and silver, you might’ve thought about buying her a nice small safe to keep all those coins secure. You might want to buy a metal detector and thoroughly scan her yard to make sure she didn’t bury any coins. She sure sounds like an interesting lady!
On April 16, 2025 in Mike Unser’s U.S. Mint Sales report: “In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 545 numismatic products. Of those, 92 outperformed their prior weekly totals, up from 63 in the previous report.” On todays(4/24/25) sales report he reports: “In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 545 numismatic products. Of those, 71 outperformed their prior weekly totals, up from 92 in the previous report.” Perhaps, a little help or am I missing something? Isn’t 71, less than 92 and or “down”’from 92? I realize this is a simple typo… Read more »
Cali, While we are on the subject of US Mint and CoinNews numbers, and CoinNews’ U.S. Mint Sales reports, I have an observation to share about Bulk 40 sales for the 2024 and 2023 Uncirculated Silver Eagles. The US Mint Numismatic Products: Cumulative Sales Figures report Item 24EG040 2024 AM Eagle Silver UNC 1 OZ (W) – 40 coin sales = 500 and 23EG040 2023 AM Eagle Silver UNC 1 OZ (W) – 40 coin sales = 599. However, the CoinNews U.S. Mint Sales reports do not list the 2024 Bulk 40 = 500 and 2023 Bulk 40 = 599… Read more »
Have same concern….in any event, sales of the ’24 UNC seem to be almost at a standstill…are collectors losing interest in this rendition of the ASE? The 2025 UNC is coming out in a few weeks. The ’25 may yet be a mintage low.
In the past decade, the United States Mint has had Net Income of $446.9 million on the Bullion side of the Mint.
In FY2024 the U.S. Mint had Net Income of $40.9 million on the Bullion side.
Unless something drastically changes with Bullion sales, the U.S. Mint will lose money in FY2025.
That’s a problem…
Yes the US Mint needs to increase the premium over spot being charged to mint and distribute gold bullion.
Hello, Mike Unser, thank you very much for your efforts here on Coin News to keep us readers up to date and aware of what is going on inside and outside the U.S. Mint! I’m sure that there’s a good chance you’re aware, the weekly sales reports that you post, is an eagerly anticipated feature for the readers of Coin News? In years past, the U.S. Mints American Gold and Silver Eagles have had a robust following. Although, the series sales have dipped significantly, like the rest of sales at the U.S Mint, may I ask a question on the… Read more »
Gold got $800 ahead of its 250 day moving average. That’s way out of normal range (previous 5 year high mark $400 above). If that pace continued, we’d be in the parabolic blowoff top I referred to a few days ago.
A pullback to $3000 would still have the long term uptrend in tact. That’s how out of whack the pricing got.
