2024 Kennedy Half Dollars Released for Collectors

Coins honoring the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, become available today at noon ET with the release of rolls and bags containing 2024 Kennedy Half Dollars from the United States Mint.

2024 Kennedy Image and Half Dollar Products
The United States Mint is offering circulating editions of 2024 P&D Kennedy Half Dollars

Product options include a 200-coin bag featuring 100 half dollars from the Philadelphia Mint and 100 from the Denver Mint. The second option is a two-roll set, comprising a roll of 20 coins from Philadelphia and a roll of 20 coins from Denver. Their prices are $147 and $34.50, respectively. All coins are struck to circulation quality but have never been released into circulation.

Kennedy Half Dollars first appeared in 1964, just a few short months after the assassination of the President they pay tribute to. The coins were issued into general circulation and as part of numismatic products from that point until 2002. Lackluster interest in using the coins for everyday transactions led to the decision to produce them only for collectors.

However, that changed in 2021 when the Federal Reserve System ordered Kennedy halves for circulation for the first time in almost two decades. This occurred again in 2022 and 2023.

The chart offered below shows mintages for the coins since 2000:

Year Mintages
2000 42,070,000
2001 40,700,000
2002 5,600,000

Half Dollar Designs

A left-facing portrait of John F. Kennedy by Gilroy Roberts appears on the obverse (heads side) of each half-dollar. The inscriptions surrounding the portrait include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the year, and a mintmark.

On the reverse (tails side) is Frank Gasparro’s modified depiction of the Presidential Seal. It features a heraldic eagle holding an olive branch and a bundle of 13 arrows with a shield.

2024 Kennedy Half Dollar (reverse)

This design has appeared every year on the half-dollar coins, except for 1975 and 1976, when it was substituted with an image of the Independence Hall of Philadelphia, commemorating the bicentennial founding of the nation. The reverse side includes inscriptions reading UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOLLAR.

Ordering and Limits

Rolls and bags of Kennedy halves can be ordered directly from the U.S. Mint’s webpage dedicated to half dollar products.

A product limit of 26,250 is listed for the two-roll sets, with 11,550 for the 200-coin bags. Each has an initial household order limit of 10 in place.

Ready for the change! Perhaps the mint will surprise us this year? So many opportunities for the mint to make it exciting and other than the Brittania, they miss nearly every time.

Rick

Previous article Cali says, “So, apparently the CCAC went with, “Street Cred” for the silver medal obverse and the “Sunflower” for the gold. A little surprised by both choices.(for the 2025 Libs)”… Agreed.. -02 lol, that’s despicable, but that’s IMO. I wish you were on the Citizens board. Same with JQC–Stella.. https://www.usmint.gov/news/ccac-meetings/2025-american-liberty-gold-coin-silver-medal-obverse I can see some potential with the Sunflower–but I have to visualize it in color. The two tone Golden core & leaves against the backdrop of the DCAM field = nice. But a Sunflower rendition of Liberty? I don’t know about that? I do think that the #06… Read more »

Major D said previous thread: “CaliSkier, the Mint’s quantity Add-To-Bag box is not always accurate.” LOL Too funny Major D, so now you think the sales reports are accurate? This is the second time in the past week they returned to the sales floor and for quite a lengthy bit of time. There were over 99 of each available this morning and had you went ahead and paid for them, you’d have 99 coming to you. What we don’t see is the continual change and adjustment made by the Mint, day in and day out unfortunately. I can guarantee that… Read more »

Yes, funny (peculiar) indeed! Something isn’t right, that’s for sure. Lack of transparency = opportunity for mischief.

1982 P Kennedy Half Dollar “No FG” FS-901 Even though this is not a sexy attractive coin, it is still a highly significant major variety for Kennedy Half Dollar collectors. The “No FG” designation achieves it distinction from the reverse side of the coin whereas the designer’s initials of Frank Gasparo (FG) are completely missing. This anomaly originated when the working dies were over polished during production and the designer’s initials were accidently polished away from the die. Additionally, there are weak FGs, No Fs and No Gs. However, in order to receive any distinction from the TPGs for this… Read more »

AKBob, thanks for the report on your Peace dollar grades. I agree with Rick and yourself re: grades given. Although dealers and others(?) can request, a minimum grade, seeing the 70’s population at PCGS at a 10, 70’s for every 69(10:1), says you should have had more 70’s IMO. But hey, they list 39 different “Labels”! NGC has a 25:1 ratio of 70’s to 69. Holy smokes! As best I can tell, NGC has 59 “Lqbels” for the 2023 Unc Peace dollars. At least they took the “High Relief” designation off the “Label” vs the misleading 2021 Peace dollars, “Labeled”… Read more »

it’s true! I just got 20 rolls… I opened them looking for silver!! now I know what they are

CaliSkier

Thanks E1, for the bonus, Kennedy information relating to the “No FG” variety. PCGS, relays the following: “One of the most intriguing characteristics of the No FG variety is that it can potentially be found on any issue in the series – leading to many cherrypicking opportunities for keen-eyed collectors.”“The most sought-after examples include the 1966 SMS, 1972-D, and 1982-P No FG Kennedy Half Dollars. These varieties have been long documented by collectors and are also recognized by PCGS.” By Joshua McMorrow-Hernandez on PCGS site: “No FG Kennedy Half Dollars – What Are They & What Are They Worth?”

E 1

Cali,

Thanks for the further deep dive on the subject. Now everybody should be an expert.

Cheers

CaliSkier

That’s awesome news John Q! Are you sure they are 2024 and not 2023? I ask, only due to the significant difference in mintages listed in Mike Unser’s article above. Over 50.4 million, more of the 2023’s out in the wild, than the 2024’s. Great pick up, especially, @ face!

Rick

Thanks E1, Great Imaging on a very scarce Mint variety. Nice coin that you have there. I always liked show & tell !..Time for me to go shopping!⚆_⚆ Here’s an image below(not mine), and apples & oranges–sorta. The Extra “V”(sorry everyone!) is also a Mint variety, even though some mistakenly ID it as an error. If this coin(and I’ve seen worse wear)goes through many years circulation cycles–The V is all but gone imo, Note the die abrasion from V up to the L–Hence, may I introduce to you–The “No “V” 1C–lol…Just another mystery–among many–in the Mint’s current era of (‘V’entris)… Read more »

Rick,

I would call that one a weak “V.” No spots, but some rim dings. Have fun shopping. I am waiting for a dividend check. Then you might see me out there.

Cheers

Rick

Agreed, a weak “V”. Believe it or not E, that image above was captured from a PCGS top pop MS67RD, a Santiago specimen. Below is the image that I missed in my haste to suggest my pending “No “V” theory”. Also a Santiago find. It is an MS66RD… It is my humble opinion, that from the very beginning–Your suggestion that the “V” is shallower than the “VDB” is a verifiable fact–See below–Nice work Eagle. And now you’re a confirmed expert on the subject… PS: Your other dividends(coins, art, car, etc)will be enjoyed by your family later on. My Numi dividends,… Read more »

1970 D Kennedy Half Dollar What makes this coin significant is a low business strike mintage of 2.15M coins. 1970 was a down year for the Kennedy half dollar, as no P&D business strike Kennedy halves were struck for circulation. Additionally, in the 1970 US Mint Set, only a “D” mint Kennedy half was included in the set. The only way to acquire the 1970 D Kennedy half dollar was through a US Mint Set. No “P” mint business struck Kennedys were produced at all that year. To further complicate the series, 1970 was the very last year the US… Read more »

Very nice coins(pics) and thanks for the 1970 D information! That’s awesome you are so into and knowledgeable about the Kennedy Halves! Ironic you brought up DMPL as when Rick said he was going shopping, I recalled the DMPL designation we’d discussed previously and checked out GC’s, to see if any were listed. They have a 2014 S Enhanced MS70 DMPL listed however it’s got haze/toning(?). The reverse at 8:00 around the H, extending towards the Eagles claw would make me want to pass. Also curious what you, Rick, John Q, others think about the striations, running diagonally across the… Read more »

Rick

I’ve studied that coin when shopping for it, and E1 would know more than me by a good bit. So I’ll keep my thoughts brief…
My opinion is that every single one of these Enhanced Kennedys of 2014 have the striations to some degree, but I could be wrong…The reverse is a nice fat fingerprint. I’d probably pass as well Cali…

E 1

Cali,

It has obverse spots and a big fingerprint on the reverse. Most if not all of the DMPLs have that 45° Degree striation pattern across the device. Like Rick, I would skip on that one.

E 1

Not to sure what the cause is. It is unique and extremely uniform. I’ve thought about that before too.

CaliSkier

You got me going E1, look out! Thanks for the Kennedy half info, as well as sparking/igniting the fire to look at the series more closely. Since I’m not actively looking at or buying currently, the best way I find to learn, is by talking about and reading about the different nuances of any given denomination. Retention of all that data/info or to recall from memory, is a whole different story/animal. LOL The next post is one of your gems, you were nice enough to share. Thanks again for all your contributions to this blog and our previous one as… Read more »

Since E1, brought up a bunch of good stuff on the Kennedy Half dollar, here is a gem he shared, from January! “Cali, No crickets here.
.
The JFK article above could have gone much further into detail on this great series. So many amazing coins to talk about….For example:
.
1964 P/D UNC Double and Triple Die Obverse. MS-66 and above. This is a nice variety gaining traction with collectors. The PUP is “Trust.” Unfortunately, the TPGs charge extra for this attribute on the holder. Not many have been graded.
.
1964 Proof Kennedy “Accented Hair.” This is one of the big money coins in… Read more »

Cali, that list above from E1 is the very reason that I got into the Kennedy Halves.
I called it, in short “The E1 top 25 Kennedy Money Coins” list…
I copied that list to my Word software(as well)so I can keep track. E1 and his enthusiasm for the series is the real deal. It rubbed off on me and I’m happy and grateful to E1 for sharing his Kennedy interests…
See below the E1 2014 Raw set he showed us a month ago, and it’s very nice.
Take note of his -S Enhanced DPML–‘Striations’ and all…..

Thanks for the info E1. I think the 2014 P/D High Relief Unc set is a bargain. I’ve acquired 43 of them in the past few years in 23 different auctions at an average price of $14.30/set. All are in OGP and have striking coins with no blemishes. Also, the 2014 4-coin silver set in OPG- I have picked up 7 of those at action/ average price of $101- again all very striking coins (of the four coins I think the W-mint is the top one). But my favorite is the 1998 2-coin commemorative silver RFK/matte JFK set. I only… Read more »

Major D,

Thank you for your response. That 2014 P&D High Relief Unc Set is a favorite of mine too. Get them while they are still inexpensive. Soon, that 197K mintage will be few, fewer, and then gone. Now ten years old. Waiting for that vanishing point. Rick has an SP-69 set and I have an SP-68 set. I was waiting for Rick to do a Bio, Stats, and Photo post for his set.

Cheers

Rick

Below is a copy/paste comment from the Perth article(yesterday)on the status of my Unc-P. I’m updating over there as things come in..Major D, you could very well have one of these $ grades, if not better…

Here’s my latest result. This one was a re-holder(why do people treat slabs so badly?)
These Clad coins were so prone to spots/rinse/haze, etc.(thanks for the warning E1)that there are no SP-70’s and scarce SP-69’s, so I’m happy to have one, given my purchase price of $300, I thought of it as a decent buy IMO….

Rick

I guess today turned out to be the “E1 appreciation day”…
And guess what else? The topic has been kept on point!

Whew, for a minute there I thought I heard the snickering in the background…
“There goes Rick again–E1’s Teachers Pet carrying on & on….”

Rick

Off topic, that was quick…
Previous article–AKBob says, “ I have to admit tho Rick, the Shield label has grown on me.”
That’s what happened to me AK(am I a label junkie now?)..Below is one of my earlier PCGS Gold shield buys. I shared it before and you may have seen it. This example, in a way the “Label” seems to boost the coin–But the coin I really like regardless. The green 2nd opinion sticker only further validates the grade for me…Sorry for the Morgan Major D–Not personal…

Rick

As I’ve said before..I’m an expert in the field of draining bank accounts…
And having a great time doing so…

data dave

So looking at the mintages over the past 20 years plus the fact that they ship to the fed reserve based on orders from banks, it is possible to find any year in circulation where they made more than they sold through bags and rolls. Especially years where they made millions more than they sold. Like 2005 and 2013.

Major D

data dave, I’ve always wondered how several NIFC halves (post 2002) could be found in boxes from the bank. I usually find about 10-20 of them scattered in the Fed rolls in any given box.

Rick

Grandpa’s stash raided & spent? Or just spent by heirs who didn’t know any better, or didn’t care? Probably not much upside given Mintages? I ask out of ignorance..I did, back in 2009–2012 buy P&D bags on a hunch from someone in a blog that thought that the series would end at any time–And here we are–still…

Major D

I wonder, who would have the gravitas and mass appeal to replace JFK if the series ended and the 50-cent wasn’t retired? It can’t be another president, because that’s bound to be too polarizing. Neil Armstrong? Or does it go back to ol’ Ben?

E 1

Allan Shepard, John Glenn, or Neil Armstrong are all worthy candidates for the half in my book. I think legislation has already decided on rotating reverses for the Kennedy half in 2026. For me, I won’t be attending the circus.

CaliSkier

Another batch of a Alabama $1’s up for grabs! 99 or more of each product again.! More than 4, I assure you Major D. 😀 LOL. The US Mint and numbers?

All four of the Alabama AI$ rolls and bags back available this morning. Surely the product limits have been blown out of the water but expect the sales next week will all be in the single digits, and below the limits.

1776-1976 S Dual Date Bicentennial Silver UNC Kennedy Half Dollar This can be a stunningly beautiful coin, providing the grade is MS-68 and above. At MS-68, a dimension opens, allowing for a greater appreciation of this silver clad coin. MS-69 is another level that most can’t find or afford either. At these high grades, we can see the beauty and realize the amount of effort put into this special dual date celebratory coin while struck in 40% silver. The simplicity of the reverse design addresses the theme of independence completely. The dual date on the obverse – equally so. The… Read more »
