So…where did those fifteen 2021 Morgan Silver Dollars with CC Privy Mark go…?

Kaiser Wilhelm

It appears, Mammoth, that they must have gone to that same place in Privy Heaven where according to the past six weekly sales (and return) reports a total of 574 other “CC” Morgan Silver Dollars and 747 “O” Morgan Silver Dollars disappeared to. I suppose this is just one of the many arcane mysteries courtesy of the Mint’s Alternate Universe.

Rich

Sir Kaiser, check out the latest headline report “U.S. Mint Issues New Requirements for Bulk Purchasers” just posted on CN. I look forward to hearing your take (interpretation on comments) on this new US Mint policy. Thanks!

Kaiser Wilhelm

Rich, I just noticed myself that this article has appeared on the site but I nevertheless appreciate the heads up regarding its availability; many thanks!

Kaiser Wilhelm

Rich, I don’t know if I’m glad I read that or want to go sit in a corner and mope, as it is clear the Mint is one of the most impressively disingenuous institutions this side of the Asteroid Belt. I swear, they have the art of smoke and mirrors laden prevarication down to an exact science, and they certainly put that to yeoman use in their latest Machiavellian masterpiece. It’s clear that you can get coins from the Mint (occasionally), you can get a lot of frustration (usually), but the one thing you can’t get is the truth (never).

Sir Kaiser, I just read your outstanding comment(s) recently posted regarding the Mint’s announced statement on Bulk Purchasers. You hit that one out of the ballpark! Many thanks for your insightful remarks revealing the dupery of the Mint these days.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Always happy to oblige, Rich, and very grateful for the positive reviews.

All the “collector” series of coins woefully under minted during these COVID-times; be it WWII commemoratives (gold and silver), Mayflower (gold & silver) or the re-issues of Morgan’s and Peace silver dollars.

What’s more irritating is the price increases of precious metal coins and all medals by US Mint. Drastic price increases based on what US Mint competitors (Royal Mint, Monaise de Paris, etc.) charge, but these competitors produce more varieties of coins & medals per annum, plus produce lower volume than US Mint does meriting higher their prices.

Kaiser Wilhelm

You are absolutely right, Christopher, that the most desirable coins coming from the U.S. Mint should definitely have much higher mintages than what has been handed us lately. Granted, low mintages almost always tend to increase the resale prices of coins, so there is that. However, I would hold that the real argument to be made in this regard is that since we as numismatists are far more interested in filling out our collections than in what we can make from the resale of any particular coin, availability of same is exponentially more important than scarcity in each and every… Read more »

Oops, forgot to provide a handle of ChrisTerp instead of my name. Collector coins become valuable because of scarcity and how pristine they are; however, coins should not become valuable two hours after they are sold out. It is not the job of the US Mint to designate which coins are to become collectible in two hours but provide for the demand of what the public (citizens and taxpayers) want. The whole of the US was mobilized in WWII and to have only 75,000 WWII silver coins and 1,945 gold coins was ridiculous. I will give a little leeway on… Read more »

Kaiser Wilhelm

ChrisTerp (apparently I do pay attention), once again you are right on the money (pun most certainly intended). The Mint has never before this recent era (error?) assigned itself the task of deciding which coins were going to become much sought after collectibles thanks specifically to their instant due-to-low-mintage predetermined scarcity. The relative scarcity and/or rarity of a coin has indeed heretofore and traditionally so been a historically determined state of affairs which came into being long after release by the Mint, by which I mean a time span on the order of years or decades, and thus only by… Read more »

I’ve actually made a major mistake Your Imperial Majesty in my statement about coins becoming valuable two hours after sale! With months notice of low mintage and only a single purchase US Mint has decided well in advance to which coin(s)/medal(s) are sought after collector pieces, essentially Spanish Doubloons (possibly forerunner of today’s cryptocurrency since many ended at bottom of ocean/seas from our Great Briatain/USA forefathers: privateer captains?). Be that as it may, now US Mint made available ten, three, two coins for purchase of such rarities to make it even more scarce for citizens to purchase. That tactic allowed… Read more »

Rich

Sirs Kaiser Wilhelm and ChrisTerp, if I may comment on the theme of the US Mint’s recent attempt to create great publicity for themselves through the artificial manufacturing of modern coin rarities, it is not so much a product of these COVID-times as it is a reflection of the US Mint Director’s ego and intent. Case in point, the cute mintage limit of 1945 for the 2020-W $50 GAE Proof V75 privy mark World War II 75th Anniversary coin, a truly vain stab to make the rarest key-date Gold American Eagle of the series. But the most blatant example was… Read more »

Kaiser Wilhelm

Wow, Rich, thanks for your extremely thorough and informative essay. I now feel that I know so much more about both the intent of the Mint’s recent minting choices and the intricacies of judging the comparative rarities of the various gold and silver American Eagle coins. It most certainly does appear to be the case that the Mint Director has in effect been trying to cement his legacy at that institution via shortcuts never before employed by the assorted previous powers that were. Rather unfortunately for him, thanks to folks like you who are on to what he has been… Read more »

ChrisTerp, to answer that most essential of all questions you ended your excellent dissertation with, in a word, no one (which is actually two words, but hey, who’s perfect). The Mint has essentially been playing cute and toying with us by coming out with one artificially scarce or instantly rare coin after another to the point where the original purpose of the numismatic portion of the Mint’s output has become lost in the process. By the way, I really liked your description of the arcane maneuvers which the Mint employs to continue to be successful as a self-serving entity but… Read more »

I don’t know why they dont limited (say 3 per address) and allow purchases from a date to a end date so as may people who want to buy can.

Kaiser Wilhelm

This, Dave, is one of many questions that can rightfully be asked. Whether or not the Mint will ever regale us with an answer and/or provide a solution is rather doubtful.

We can be sure the Mint’s choices in everything it does will remain a mystery to us.

The Mint messed up big time in the “sales” of 2021 Morgan O and CC dollars

Kaiser Wilhelm

It was no surprise at all, Joseph, to those of us who have been riding a veritable tsunami of repetitive disappointments thanks to the self-serving shenanigans of the Mint.

Where the Mint is concerned, this most definitely arrives more than once a year.
