US Mint Sales: 2018 American Innovation Dollars Lead Again

Make it three weeks in a row for the 2018-S Proof American Innovation Dollar. It’s led numismatic sales for the United States Mint since its Dec. 14 release.

The proof coin from San Francisco advanced another 6,325 to lift its total to 79,723. It has climbed a combined 36,846 since scoring three-day sales of 42,877.

Rolls of Philadelphia and Denver-struck Innovation dollars were also among top-sellers for the U.S. Mint, ranking 8th and 9th on the popularity scale. Bags of them were further down the list, registering 25th and 26th.

Altogether — counting the proof, rolls and bags — collectors in 17 days have scooped up a combined 658,733 Innovation dollars. The Mint’s five products with the dollars have now realized more than $1.25 million.

  5. 2018 Mint Set (+1,781 to 238,585)
  6. 2018-W Proof Silver Eagle (+1,722 to 339,312)
  7. 2018-P Proof WWI Silver Dollar (+746 to 64,982)
  8. 2018-P American Innovation 25-Coin Roll (+736 to 5,389)
  9. 2018-D American Innovation 25-Coin Roll (+709 to 5,021)
  10. 2018 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set (+643 to 40,776)

In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 163 numismatic products. Eighty of them outperformed their prior weekly gains against 26 previously. Six products increased by more than 1,000 units against 8 in the previous report. In addition, 1 product saw its sales reduced compared to 0 previously. Block Island Quarter Three-Coin Sets drop by 339 units to 11,895.

I just deposited 80% of innovation dollars to my local bank, these coin are junk. I guess The Mint rush to make these coins, cause the coin had tons of scratch line or flowing cloud. If you compare Native dollar , presidential dollar and this dollar coin the color look like different . one have more golden color , and new dollar are much whiter . ! Did you think that something wrong on composite alloy ?

Good question, and perhaps you are quite right about the rush. The mint ones I’ve seen look okay, the proof quite bright, but quality could vary. The biggest thing wrong is making a totally pointless new dollar when billions are sitting in vaults. 15 years of them for every state and territory? Really?

Until you get rid of the paper dollar bill, these are just going to sit in vaults for decades, as SBA did before they got popular for bridge tolls in the 90s. When SBA stocks ran out they started down the sacagawea/presidential dollar road. But today most bridges use electronic tolling because it would slow down traffic too much to count coins (even dollars) given how high tolls are now, and with many people using electronic pay methods everywhere, there’s just not going to be a big demand for circulation dollar coins anytime soon.
