Daniel Frank Sedwick, LLC will offer a rare Brazil, Serro Frio gold ingot #114, Dom Pedro II, 1832, with original guia, plated in Prober, in the Treasure and World Coin Auction #10 held October 25-26, 2011.

The pseudo-monetary gold ingots of Brazil, made from 1778 to 1833, are among the rarest items of South American numismatics. They are comparable to the U.S. pioneer gold issues of the California Gold Rush of 1848--1855, as they were made from natural gold that merchants and prospectors brought in to official foundries for testing, smelting, marking and taxation. Gold Prices Remain Above Platinum, Silver Advances 2.4%

Fine Gold BarsU.S. gold prices rebounded 0.9 percent Tuesday, recovering a portion of their previous day losses. The yellow metal also closed higher than platinum for a fourth straight session. Gains in gold were attributed to bargain and safe-haven buying.

"The debt crisis of euro-zone peripherals remains the dominant issue," Daniel Briesemann, an analyst at Commerzbank AG in Frankfurt, said in a report cited on Bloomberg. "Gold should remain in demand as a safe haven."

Gold prices rose $16.80 to $1,830.10 an ounce in the December futures contract on the [...]

United States Mint 2010 Silver Sets

The United States Mint on Monday, September 12, returned to selling two silver sets which were suspended on September 2 due to volatile and soaring precious metals. The sets returned at their same pre-suspension prices.

The Mint halted sales of the 2010 United States Mint Silver Proof Set ($64.95) and the 2010 United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set ($39.95) after silver reached as high as $43.50 an ounce. Since, the white metal has taken a pounding, dropping as low as $39.75 an ounce on Monday [...]

In The Lead – Welcome to Chitaly?

Precious Metals CommentarySimilar to the aforementioned ups and downs in European spirits, the overnight period also saw gold undergoing its own (by now routine) roller-coaster ride of value and emotions.

The yellow metal fell as low as the $1,794.00 level and it remained in a close overnight orbit around the psychological round figure as the markets prepared for the opening of New York action. Some still fear that there is something developing in the market at a time when 75% of money managers have been seen recommending gold to their clients; something they would not have been caught dead doing, circa 2006 or even later [...]

Gold Prices Fall 2.5%, Silver Tumbles 3.4%

Fine Gold BarsU.S. gold prices declined 2.5 percent Monday, snapping a two-session winning streak. Among factors analysts cited for losses included profit-taking, a stronger U.S. dollar and selling to meet margin calls.

"We had a similar situation in 2008, when stock markets dropped and pulled gold lower, as some hedge funds had to compensate loses by liquidating gold positions," Reuters quoted said Peter Fertig, a consultant at Quantitative Commodity Research.

Gold prices declined $46.20 to close at $1,813.30 an ounce in the [...]

Precious Metals CommentaryThe new trading week got off to a fairly rocky start in the precious metals' complex this morning as slumping equity markets and a stronger US dollar sapped more value and bullish enthusiasm from the sector.

Spot gold was down about $40 near the $1,820.00 per ounce level ($1,800 appears to have come into play once again) while spot silver lost about 75 cents to trade near $40.60 the ounce [...]
