WWI: 90th Anniversary £5 Silver Proof Coin Series

The British Royal Mint has produced a series of 18 sterling silver proof coins commemorating the 90th anniversary of the end of World War I. The coins are issued under the authorities of Alderney, the Cayman Islands and the Solomon Islands and have a total collection limit of just 5,000.

According to the Mint, the commemorative themes were "designed by the Royal Mint Design Team, drawing inspiration from the art and literature of those who experienced the war first hand and from their own visit to the battlefields of France and Belgium."

Gold Withdraws as Oil Drops Below $60

Gold and other precious metals fell backwards on Tuesday as oil dipped below $60 a barrel. New York silver, gold and platinum futures fell 4.1 percent, 1.8 percent and 3.9 percent, respectively.

Bullion update ...December crude-oil sank $3.08, or 4.9 percent, to finally settle at $59.33 a barrel — its lowest level since March of 2007. The contract reached as low as $58.32. Concerns over a poor global economy curtailing demand was an often cited reason for today’s drop.

December silver plunged 41.5 cents to end at $9.805 an ounce.

January platinum fell $33.30 to settle at $826.60 an ounce.

Gold for December lost $13.70 to close to $732.80 an ounce. Its intraday low was $725.50.

Children who received a free, shiny Hawaii quarter were pleased, as it appears were those who waited in long lines for many hours to exchange money for the coins.

The British Royal Mint Launches New Website

Screenshot of The Royal Mint websiteThe British Royal Mint has launched a new online site featuring a refreshing design, easier navigation, interactive elements, and more detail for coins and their history.

A welcomed improvement is within the product pages. The top panel contains an interactive element featuring each coin’s design through various image sideshows.

Retained is the ability to zoom into the coin for a closer look. New is the 360 degree spin on selected coins enabling collectors to better see both sides of the coin in greater detail.

US Mint Eliminates 22 Gold and Platinum Coins - Best Buys Now, Before They’re Gone
