U.S. Mint circulating production slowed sharply in August to 232.4 million coins, down 46.9% from July’s 437.9 million. Output declined for nickels, dimes and quarters, although the monthly total was 20.4% higher than a year earlier.
As the 1776 ~ 2026 Semiquincentennial rollout moved further along, dimes and nickels led August production. More President Donald J. Trump $1 coins were struck, while production continued for Enduring Liberty half dollars and two of the five quarter designs. The recently released U.S. Constitution quarter accounted for most of the month’s quarter output.

The U.S. Mint produces circulating coins based on orders it receives from the Federal Reserve Banks. The Federal Reserve then distributes the coins through its terminals to commercial banks and other financial institutions, helping maintain the supply needed to meet everyday public demand.
August Production by Denomination
Recent totals reflect a major change in the Mint’s circulating coin mix. At the direction of the Treasury, the U.S. Mint ended the production of cents for circulation in July 2025, removing what had long been its highest-volume denomination from circulating production. Cents are now struck only for collector products in proof and uncirculated finishes.
No cents were produced for circulation in August 2025 either, making the year-over-year comparison more representative of the Mint’s current production mix.
Among the most commonly used denominations, August production fell 52.5% for nickels, 51.2% for dimes and 25.8% for quarters.
The U.S. Mint also produces other circulating-quality coins, including half dollars and dollar coins. The Federal Reserve no longer routinely orders dollar coins for general circulation, but the Mint continues to strike them for collector products. The same was true of half dollars until Federal Reserve orders resumed in 2021. Half dollars have been produced for circulation each year since, though in much smaller quantities than other denominations. The Mint also continues to strike circulating-quality half dollars for collector products.
Mintages of 2026 Semiquincentennial Half Dollars
It remains unclear how many 2026 half dollars have been produced specifically for general circulation. This year is unique for the denomination, as the long-running Kennedy half dollar design has been replaced with a one-year-only "Enduring Liberty" theme marking the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Half dollar production slowed at both the Denver and Philadelphia Mints in August compared with July. U.S. Mint figures show the following:

Combined production through August totals 47.6 million coins from Denver and 35.4 million from Philadelphia — 83 million coins overall. That is already more than double the 34 million half dollars produced during all of 2025, when Denver struck 19.8 million and Philadelphia produced 14.2 million.
On May 26, the U.S. Mint opened sales of 2026-P and 2026-D Enduring Liberty half dollars in rolls and bags containing equal numbers from each facility. Through Aug. 30, sales totaled 12.35 million coins. The rolls have been unavailable for some time, with sales essentially at the allotted 100,000-product limit. Bags remained available throughout August, with roughly 8,200 of the 50,000-product limit still available at month’s end.
In August, the Mint presented 2,983 specially struck 1776 ~ 2026 Enduring Liberty half dollars to the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
Mintages of Native American Dollars
No 2026 Native American dollars were produced in August. U.S. Mint figures show:

Combined production through August totals 3.4 million coins from Denver and 3.9 million from Philadelphia — 7.3 million coins overall.
For comparison, 2025 production reached 5.18 million coins, including 2.52 million from Denver and 2.66 million from Philadelphia.
On Jan. 27, the U.S. Mint began selling 2026-P and 2026-D Native American dollars, with buyers able to choose coins struck at either the Philadelphia or Denver Mint. Through Aug. 30, combined sales totaled 1,086,300 coins, split nearly evenly between the two facilities. Both options have remained unavailable from the Mint for some time. Reported sales stand essentially at the listed product limits, indicating that little to no inventory remains for further sales.
More Trump $1 Coins Struck in August
Production of the 1776 ~ 2026 President Donald J. Trump $1 coin continued in August. The Philadelphia Mint struck an additional 7.4 million pieces after producing 9 million in July, bringing the total to 16.4 million coins. Production has been exclusive to Philadelphia, as previously announced.
The Mint began selling Trump dollars Sept. 2 in 25-coin rolls priced at $61 and 100-coin bags at $154.50. Included among those products are 250,000 dollars struck July 4 with a JULY 4th privy mark and randomly mixed into the rolls and bags. The bags became unavailable in less than an hour, while the rolls remained available for about 7 hours and 20 minutes. Product limits of 150,000 rolls and 50,000 bags cover at most 8.75 million coins.
The Mint also said Sept. 2 that Trump dollars will be released into circulation. With 16.4 million struck through August, production extends well beyond the amount represented by collector roll and bag limits.

In August, the Denver Mint struck 133 million coins and the Philadelphia Mint produced 99.4 million, lifting combined output to 232.4 million coins.

Year-to-date, the Denver Mint struck 1,251,500,000 coins and the Philadelphia Mint produced 1,048,700,000 coins, bringing the total to 2,300,200,000 coins. The total was 41.5% lower than the 3,930,620,000 coins produced during the same period in 2025.

If the current production pace continues through December, the 2026 annual mintage would reach 3.45 billion coins. For comparison, the U.S. Mint produced nearly 4.95 billion coins for circulation in 2025, marking a fifth straight yearly decline and the lowest output since 2009. The 2025 total was pulled lower in part by the near end of cent production in July, when just 400,000 were struck, followed by no cent production from August through December.

As part of the nation’s America 250 celebration, the U.S. Mint is striking five unique 1776 ~ 2026 Semiquincentennial quarters. The five feature designs recognizing the Mayflower Compact, the Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Gettysburg Address. The first four have entered circulation, while the Mint has also begun production of the fifth and final design.
The Mayflower Compact quarter entered circulation on Jan. 5, with the U.S. Mint offering rolls and bags to the public beginning Feb. 5. The Mint’s reported production totals follow:
