Online bidding opened Wednesday, Nov. 26, for the historic sale of the last circulating pennies ever struck by the United States Mint. Stack’s Bowers Galleries is offering the pieces — listed here — on behalf of the Mint in a special auction marking the end of more than two centuries of cent production.

The sale features 232 three-coin "Omega" sets, each containing a 2025 Philadelphia-struck penny, a 2025-D Denver-struck penny, and — for the first time — a 99.99% 24-karat gold uncirculated cent, also produced at the Philadelphia Mint. All coins carry a small Omega privy mark recognizing their place among the final strikes.

Each set includes a serialized Certificate of Authenticity, and the final set, No. 232, comes with the actual dies used to strike the entire run of Omega cents.

Current Bid Prices

Bidding at the time of this writing ranged from $9,500 to $170,000, with the top bid placed on the final set that includes the canceled dies.

The cents have been certified by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). The auction firm also noted the pennies will be reviewed by Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC).

Grades

Grades for the circulating cents range from MS63 to a few MS67s, with the Denver-struck pieces showing the highest grades.

Grades for the 24-karat gold cents consist of six MS68s, with the remainder graded MS69.

Live Bidding

Live bidding will begin Thursday, Dec. 11, at noon EST (9 a.m. PST), with the auction broadcast from the firm’s Costa Mesa headquarters. Stack’s Bowers is waiving the buyer’s premium for this sale.

Numismatic versions of the cent will continue to be produced by the Mint in limited quantities for collectors.
