The United States Mint received global recognition at the 32nd Mint Directors Conference (MDC) in Cape Town, where the 2023 Jovita Idar quarter was honored in the Best Circulating Coin or Coin Series category.

Struck as the ninth release in the U.S. Mint’s American Women Quarters™ Program, the coin features a unique reverse design by Mint Medallic Artist John P. McGraw. Idar – an influential Mexican-American journalist, teacher, activist, and suffragist – is depicted with clasped hands. Within her silhouette are inscriptions representing the causes she championed and the newspapers she helped shape.

Among them: MEXICAN AMERICAN RIGHTS, TEACHER, NURSE, JOURNALIST, EVOLUCIÓN, ASTREA, EL HERALDO CRISTIANO, LA CRÓNICA, EL PROGRESO, LA CRUZ BLANCA, and LA LIGA FEMENIL MEXICANISTA, alongside standard coinage inscriptions including QUARTER DOLLAR, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

The MDC Coin Awards recognize excellence in coin design, production, packaging, and distribution. This year’s winners were selected from 112 global nominations submitted by mints worldwide and judged by members of the Mint Directors Association.

I liked this design. It’s why I ordered the three roll set. I’ve gotten two from circulation so far. I’ve wondered how long the letters in her dress will last after some time in circulation. I’ve gotten all the AWQs in proof silver. I like the original Washington portrait.
Next year’s 250th anniversary of the American Revolution should be interesting.

It is very interesting. But, had they made the 5z versions this would be amazing. Small scale fails withou5ma magnifying glass

Agree.

Gold and Silver both moved when the Fed’s statement was released.

Gold moved Up $10.00
Silver moved Down $.09

When the stock market closed, Gold:Silver ratio was 104:1

That is the Highest ratio in nearly 5 years.

The last time Gold:Silver ratio hit 105:1 or over was on May 14, 2020, when it closed at 109:1…

Gold wound up – $32 Ag -.74…. Seems like holding rates would be good for Ag, but the T announcement of potential Tariff exclusions & withdrawls was more – for the PM$, long term Ag seems overbought but will seemingly hit $3,500 before what were the “Summer Doldrums $€£¥…..”

Duh I made a boo boo George…Au overbought Ag laggerd neuvo industrial metal hamstrung by current economic uncertainty and trade war

For kicks, do an eBay search for “Harriet Tubman Quarter” and be amazed at the brazenness and/or stupidity of the 51 results.

Interestingly, many of these sellers have zero transactions and 0% feedback. I wonder why ….

Some of these quarters actually sold for 7 to 16 dollars. “In Cod We Trust” on the obverse appeared to be a selling point.

I get there’s always those that think they can dupe someone into paying a lot of money for a common coin but what irks me the most is the mislabeling of it. The coin even says Jovita Idar on it, not to mention a ton of info out there on the AWQ series. Funny- I guess “In Cod We Trust” must be for the Fish N Chips lovers out there!

REB

I used to love me some Long John Silver’s.

i thought this was the more original and interesting design of the quarters – if nothing else, putting all the legally-required verbiage alongside other phrases mixed together in the clothing was unusual and is probably why this design got the nod. though yes as others have stated it’s hard to appreciate the coin’s design directly without a magnifier.

I agree. I’d say it’s a very innovative design. I especially like the clean field on the reverse with all of the usual text (Quarter Dollar, United States of America, E Pluribus Unum) contained within the torso. And from a collector’s perspective- having a pristine, mark-free field will be a differentiator IMO– as everything coming from rolls and change will most likely show some marks. That’s why for P&D I’d say the Uncirculated Set is the one to have. For the S-Uncirculated (only available from the Mint rolled set) I think any MS70 (if they’re out there) will become very… Read more »

Completely agree.
