The opportunity to pre-order the U.S. Mint’s 2025 Marine Corps 250th Anniversary Commemorative Coins at discounted introductory pricing is nearing its end. Available in gold, silver, and clad, these coins honor the founding of the Marine Corps on Nov. 10, 1775, recognizing its contributions to U.S. security and defense.

Pre-orders started on Jan. 2, with a $5 introductory discount available until 3 p.m. ET on Monday, Feb. 3. Shipping is set to begin on Feb. 11.

Authorized under Public Law 118-10, the 250th Anniversary of the United States Marine Corps Commemorative Coin Act, each coin’s price includes a surcharge: $35 for each $5 gold coin, $10 for each silver dollar, and $5 for each clad half dollar. After associated costs, surcharge proceeds will benefit the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation to support the Marine Corps Heritage Center.

The question I have for myself is whether I’m likely to change my mind on these before the end of the year, and if so- why spend $5 more per coin later when I can avoid it now? This may come down to an impulse purchase decision just before 3 pm on Feb 3.

Antonio mentioned not buying (an ASE I believe it was) from the Mint in the past because of price and later regretting it. This resonates with me because I’ve done the same thing—which got me to thinking, has anyone ever bought from the Mint (aside from the low mintage wonders) thinking the price was just right? I recall buying ASEs at $67 (Unc) and $73 (proof) a few years ago grumbling about how high it was. Now at $91 and $95, those older prices look really good in retrospect.

Yea, I bought several Trump large medals just before the price increase. They were a steal. Flipped several on eBay and made out quite well!
Ditto the Baseball Hall of Fame silver dollars – one of my favorite coins.
I’d rank the Peace Dollar (first time around) right up there, too.

Does anyone remember the song by the group Chicago “Does Anyone Really Know What Time It Is?” with the refrain “does anybody really care?” Let me rephrase to “Does Anyone Really Know What the Real Mintage Is?” Alan recently asked about the 2024 ASE Star Privy and whether its mintage counted as bullion or numismatic, which led me to wonder about the mintages for the P & D circulating denomination coins.
