In the words of Keithster
<>
These are nice looking coins, it’s a shame very few people in America even know about or care about them.
That’s what happens when our coinage has no real value at all. Three nickels used to buy you a McDonald’s hamburger. Now well over a dollar!
If they just changed the denomination of our coinage from cents to dollars and did away with paper money, they could eliminate BEP and people would carry coinage around with them instead of dumping it in a jar every night.
They could also go back to minting coinage in silver!!!!!
A regular McDonalds hamburger is $2.49 where I’m at. Very few people pay cash anymore– at least that’s my observation at the drive-through where it’s either digital through the app or plastic put in a scanner. Same observation in-line at the post office where incidentally I can’t believe a roll of 100-stamps is now $73! What can I say other than inflation happens (to everything over time- always was, always will be). Only us old folks have coin jars. Younger generations want nothing to do with paper money and coins. There’s no going back to silver circulating coins. If anything,… Read more »
As Richard Russell used to say, it’s “inflate or die.”
I needed a few quarters for the hotel laundry machine last week.
The nice young ’20 something’ clerk was polite, but refused when I asked her to break my “Dollar” for the quarters that I needed. Much to her relief, I pulled out a paper “Dollar” for the change. Not wanting to argue or explain, I suggested she google “Golden Dollars” while sitting there on her smartphone!
PS: @TonyGA.. We need to hear from KEITHSTER <<<Good Luck All>>>
Rick,
A couple of months back, I left a cash tip for our young waitress, in the form of an SBA dollar, a clad Ike dollar, a golden Pres. dollar, and a well-circulated Kennedy half. Poor girl had never seen any of these; I had to explain what each of them was.
It does appear we’re headed toward a cashless economy for most transactions. The only time I use coins much myself these days is at the laundromat (where I wish the machines would accept dollar coins). $3+ per load is a lot of quarters!
If you left her two $2 bills, that really would have thrown her.
Probably call the PoPo.., thinking it was Monopoly funny money….
When I gave a JFK as part of my Taco Bell purchase @drive thru the cashier called the manager, she thought it was a $5 coin….
You should have asked for 3 $1’s.., in exchange,
and offered for him/her to keep the $2 tip…. 😛
Last year I wanted to off load some $1 Pres’
So I went to a nearby Target to blow them.., when checking out, the check out girl called over her Manager to see if she could accept them…. – I kid you NOT!
I was like, “Really?!”
The peeps behind me in line were like.., “Really Dude?! Just swipe a card..”. I got more than one eye roll then…. And a couple of sighs,
Now the gas station tire air pressure machines charge $1.50, for about enough air for 2 & 1/2 tires…. So I drive around with about pound and half of quarters, just in case I need air, or toll money.
KCSO, those compact air compressors that plug into your car lighter port aren’t that expensive. I think I paid $20 for mine and it’s tucked under my car seat. It sure beats putting quarters into a gas station machine, and it’s there whenever and wherever you need it. As for tolls, I’ve got an EZPass transponder on my windshield which is accepted in more than a dozen states. Everything digital, no need for cash except for an emergency when there’s wide-spread power outage.
Sam — For Veteran’s Day (and every day since) I gave every Vet I met a 2023 Louisiana Innovation Golden $ … the one that featured the Higgins Landing Boat. Along with it I included a business-card-sized-note Thanking Them for Their Service and Sacrifice as well as giving background on that coin … one that they would otherwise never see in change. Their responses were universally touching … seeing that Golden Dollar as The Medal most of them never got. How different a couple generations can be ….. — Mike PS If any of you would like the text of… Read more »
Great story, great guy that you are. Very good idea!
Yes, I would like to see the text that you put on the card. Thanks in advance!
Rick —
I planned to do this LONG before Veteran’s Day … when you could still buy $100 Bags of the 2023 $1 Higgins Coins.
I would present the Coin and shake the Veteran’s hand. Since they would typically struggle to see what it actually was, I would then immediately give them the attached card … printed 2-sided on photo quality paper folded to be the size of a business card with the Higgins description on the inside.
If you do this, be prepared for some very touching reactions.
— Mike
Reviewing my prior entry, it appears you will likely have to click on that icon in order to read what I wrote. For those of you that have difficulty doing so, here’s a repeat of what I said: THE HIGGINS BOAT The U.S. Mint’s 2023 Louisiana “American Innovation” $1 Coin depicts a World War II Higgins Boat landing on the beach at Normandy. As its innovative landing ramp opened, the last bastion of safety for all too many patriotic and brave Soldiers was exposed to German machine guns … and many gave up their lives. While this coin is Legal… Read more »
Mike, that’s the best use of the AI$ I’ve heard yet! What a great thing to do!
Thanks Mike Hunt,
That really is something!
To take the time, effort, planning and expense for your caring gesture & gift to these veterans is truly heartwarming to see.
Happy Holidays Mike!
Rick,
She’s just another example of our great public education system which obviously teaches as little as possible.
Yeah.., America Education Systems has truly embraced the premise of the Inverse Relationship…. Raise State & Locality Tax, Raise State & County Education budgets, Decrease STEM education.., Masterful! Decrease the education budget by not hiring higher dollar STEM teaches…. Brilliant! Do they teach math anymore, like out in Washington State? Or Cali? Thought I read recently that teaching math was discriminatory anyway.., Probably a good thing they struck it from the curriculum! Sorry for the rant…, I’m in my early 50’s now(not sure how that happened).., & amazed how financially inept this country is.., not only Gen X’ers, and it… Read more »
It’s the new math. 1+1=let me think about it. 😀
KCSO, I’d say math challenges are not just limited to the younger generations. I’ve had incidents with older cashiers. I recently bought some discounted items at a local store that had 30% off stickers, but no adjusted price. The older cashier had to take out a calculator and multiply the price by 0.3, then subtract that amount from the total. I said just multiply the price by 0.7, and she said “no, that won’t work”. Too funny.
I don’t know. Plenty of schools seem to be doing a good job teaching the bible and banning books. No wonder they don’t have any time to teach kids how to count their change.
REB, in my area School Boards and Library Boards have been taken over by highly-politized zealots. It has very little to do with what benefits the kids.
Craig, I’d say you get back what you put into it- and by that, I mean you can’t teach a kid that doesn’t want to learn, or that the kid’s parents undermine. Teachers are unsung scapegoats IMO. Lots of teachers in my family. What a challenging, politized, low-paying profession. It takes a special kind of dedicated person who wants to make a difference. There’s a humorous YouTube video called “Alternative Math” to illustrate my point. Alternative Math | Short Film – YouTube
Amen, Major D.
When I was young, if there was a disagreement with a teacher, my parents ALWAYS gave the teacher the benefit of the doubt. That’s the way it ought to be now, but unfortunately, we have plenty of idiots who think they know better than a trained professional. I guess “doing your own research” is better than deferring to someone with years of training and experience.
a ‘20 something’ ? – she refused because she didn’t know, or want to figure out, how many quarters to give you, for your buck…
Rick, you totally got the ‘eye roll’ when you walked away.., as you didn’t leave at least a $2 buck tip for the effort, to exchange your $1 paper to 4 clads…
I’m not joking! ;p
A $5, a $10 and $20 with a 1/50z silver center plug…..
$5.89 if you want anything on that burger…
Had one of those Burger King Big Texas burgers the other day.., A Big $10 Bucks…. Thou Damn Good!
Rich, just an FYI Re: Lowest Mintage Commemoratives
I noticed that the Mint’s latest sales report has some different figures for 2021 NLE, 2022 NPH and 2022 NLB. For 2021 NLE the sales report even differs from the Historical Commemorative Coin Figures, which I thought were already audited.
The GG clad proof half is now sold out in addition to the Tubman silver dollars (unc and proof). I guess the Mint got wise to not overproduce so as to not destroy at the end of the year.
The GG clad uncirculated half is a better deal. Lower mintage and higher return at resale.
Major D, thanks for discovering and calling attention to the latest sales figures for the 2022 National Purple Heart (NPH), 2022 Negro Leagues Baseball (NLB) and 2021 National Law Enforcement (NLE) Commemorative Gold and Silver Uncirculated & Proof coins. I’ve updated the sales/mintage figures as follows: 2022 $5 Gold NPH Uncirculated: change = -11 loss 2022 $5 Gold NPH Proof: no change 2022 $5 Gold NLB Uncirculated: no change 2022 $5 Gold NLB Proof: change = +2 gain 2021 $5 Gold NLE Uncirculated: no change 2021 $5 Gold NLE Proof: no change 2022 $1 Silver NPH Uncirculated: change = -140… Read more »
2024 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Silver Medal saw only 89 returned. Impressive. Very impressive. I guess collectors like them, even though they’re medals and not coins. I don’t regret acquiring one. Prices for them are holding steady on ebay.
Enjoying comments on this thread!
Wanted to share what I happened on at the local hardware store this week – 3 employees were at the register pulling up the cameras because some guy used a fake nickel –
I asked to see it and it was a 2006 S Proof – beautiful – I let them know it absolutely was not fake and agreed with them it looks completely different lol!!!
@Rick – yes – you are correct – for some reason the text disappeared when I posted the comment in honor of him and I couldn’t edit it either..,.
@Tony@GA you should have pulled out a nickel and offered to trade them the suspect nickel. I wonder how many PR-55/PR-53 coins there out there. I mentioned before I got a proof silver 1976 quarter at my laundromat bill changer. @Sam-I-Am my laundromat only cost $2.50/wash 🙂
Tony@GA said: “3 employees were at the register pulling up the cameras because some guy used a fake nickel”
I truly had to laugh, in that a whole mob can walk into a store and loot it, with nary an effort by the store owners to get police to look at cameras or take any other punitive action in many cities and states. Yet these three young employees are reviewing video, to see who it is they thought passed a fake nickel? LOL Things are upside down crazy backwards in these United States IMO… Just saying…
It’s a big country. We all don’t have looting, high crime, mass shootings or a myriad of other things that the internet and media like to sensationalize. Just saying.
I agree … just saying.
Cali & other looter states –
y’all need a Governor like DeSantis!
I couldn’t live in a state that wasn’t law & order oriented.
That nickel video story made my day – classic!
I’ve got a governor like DeSantis – you know, one of the dumbest, sickest states in the country. But at least we’ve got “law & order”. <eye roll>.
You have one of the best Gov’s Dave and it looks like you also have one of the smartest (certainly the richest) man looking to live in Florida. Some say he already has moved into Mar-a-Lago with the President-elect D.J.Trump! Not bad, Dave!
2025’s Innovation Dollars have to space themed coin with the shuttle launch for Florida and the Apollo Astronaut for Texas. A lot of y’all are not fans of reverse proof but i think the mirrored device and frosted field might look neat for these two designs. I liked it for the Alabama/Saturn V design. Does anybody remember of the US Mint shuts down for a US Government shutdown. I’m pretty sure the numismatic part is non-essential, but does there fulfillment subcontractor not get paid and shut down too. Some mentioned using their free shipping benefit before it expires at year… Read more »
You can still buy them from the Mint going back to 2019.
Antonio, I’d say about two-thirds of the AI$ products are either sold-out or not available. The only 2019 AI$ products available are the single-coin reverse proofs, which the Mint made way too many of. The 2024 Alabama uncirculated (rolls and bags) was one of the fastest sell-outs.
That’s if you’re interested in the AI$ coins. I wonder if they’ll hold their value in the future. Same for the Presidential $ and Sacagawea $ coins.
I think there’s a market for the AI$ within the state that’s depicted on them– as a novelty if nothing else. Or, for the subject matter that’s depicted. For instance, I could see the Indiana race car, Alabama rocket and the Sacagawea ballerina as stocking stuffers for young kids as real “golden” dollars that they could spend. As for the Presidents, nope I don’t see them doing anything or exciting anybody in the future. As for any of them holding value, I’d say not in my lifetime, if ever. There were just way, way too many Presidential dollars made. Perhaps… Read more »
@Antonio I was thinking of using my free shipping for possibly a 2024 Mint Set. I already got my RP AI$ set for this year. I have no expectation of them holding any value. I’m doing like @MajorD said and getting a few I like in RP. I used to get individual AI$ that I like, but now the USM bundles them and you have to buy all 4 for the year.
Vinnie,
Agreed regarding the RP AI $ for this year. I thought the pictures were impressive.
I agree Vinnie C, I think the space themed coins will be popular. What I’d really like to see is the Space Force silver medal to complete the Armed Forces series (2.5 oz and 1-oz).
Didn’t see any evidence of Space Force in 2025.
Me either. It’s been a mystery
