The United States Mint introduced two products last week: the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Silver Medal on Feb. 13, and the 2024-W Proof American Platinum Eagle on Feb. 15. Both were top weekly sellers for the U.S. Mint.
Priced at $75, the 1-ounce .999 fine silver medal depicting Hayes registered initial sales of 13,495, making it the Mint’s top-selling product for the week ending Feb 18. In fact, its total sales already surpass those of any other Presidential silver medal released since 2022, except for the Abraham Lincoln medal, which stands at 18,753. That said, a similar situation briefly occurred with the immediately preceding medal honoring Ulysses S. Grant, which debuted with sales of 13,984 following its release on Oct 11. However, it later experienced some negative adjustments, resulting in its current sales totaling 13,181.
2024-W Proof Platinum Eagle Sales Debut
The 2024-W Proof American Platinum Eagle is the fourth coin in the U.S. Mint’s five-year design series celebrating the freedoms of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Released at $1,445, it achieved four-day opening sales of 2,783 coins, ranking it as the Mint’s third best seller for the week ending Feb. 18.
Over the same number of starting days and within the design theme, the first coin (released in 2021) debuted with sales of 4,961, the second coin (released in 2022) opened with sales of 6,668, and the third coin (released in 2023) started with sales of 9,620 coins.
The first and second coins are no longer available, with their last reported sales recorded at 9,884 and 9,940, respectively. As for the third coin, its sales most recently increased by 24 to reach 8,238.
Earlier today, prices for the platinum coins increased by $50 to $1,495.

In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 424 numismatic products. The data revealed that 86 products outperformed their sales from the previous week, compared to 61 in the prior report. Excluding the new products, 2 products experienced an increase of more than 1,000 units, whereas only 1 did in the previous report.
In addition, 14 products experienced negative weekly sales compared to the 8 in the previous report, with most of them falling by at least 100 units on the low side.

Interestingly, this year’s platinum coin was $100 cheaper than last year’s and $200 cheaper than 2021’s & 2022’s coins. Is collectors’ interest in this series flagging despite lower prices?
Have you been watching the spot price for platinum? Its high was nearly $1300/oz and now it’s $897/oz. I wouldn’t say the mint is giving away anything at these ‘lower prices’, at least for those of us that use common sense when spending dollars.
I’d love it if this year’s platinum specimen didn’t sell another coin. I’m all for lower mintages due to lack of demand. That allows me to buy the coin easily and watch it go up in price later in the secondary market. Not that I would ever sell any of my collection, but you’ve got to keep the heirs happy.
Man, the mint sure has killed any interest in collecting those ‘once hot, must have’ Congratulations Sets! Only 16300 sold? Magic Mike can’t be happy with those check boxes running the mint these days.How is he going to sell these ‘rare’ collectibles if they don’t sell out within hours of their release. I guess he’s just going to have to resort to misspeaking the facts.
Yawn…. until this years morgan and peace dollar releases….ive halted everything else. I gave up on the ASE unc and proof series this year with exception of 1 ASE bullion a year to complete the Dansco album page. Even the silver proof sets. With prices what they are……egh…. the mints slowly lost me as a customer. The only thing that sparks any interest with me is those Morgan and Peace dollars…..and thats for personal reasons.
