The latest batch of U.S. Mint sales figures are through Jan. 1 and, resultantly, should offer nearly finalized results for 2022 commemorative coins with those honoring the Negro National League and the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor having gone off-sale on Dec. 28.

As noted in an earlier article, several of the commemorative products have been unavailable a while before the 28th. Their totals changed little, except for sales of the 2022-W Purple Heart Colorized Silver Dollar which increased by 41.

Elsewhere, and for a third instance, U.S. Mint stats showed slightly higher volumes of sales with 65 products outperforming their prior weekly increases compared to 61 previously.

Three products posted negative weekly sales just like in the previous report. Their reductions ranged from 1 to 3, with the latter tagged to the 2022-S Proof Negro Leagues Baseball Half Dollar.

Major D

In the final tally, Rich was spot-on in calling the clean sweep for the NLB commemoratives in having the lowest mintage in each $5 gold and $1 silver category (proof and uncirculated). In addition, the NLB clad uncirculated half-dollar was also #1, and the NLB clad proof half-dollar was a close second to the 2018 Breast Cancer Awareness (22,832 to 22,391).

Kaiser Wilhelm

Good Sir Rich is well known here for his high level of numismatic acumen; yet another one hit out of the park shouldn’t be all that much of a surprise to any of us. Kudos to him for the excellent call and kudos to you, Major D, not just for taking proper notice of that success but additionally for providing specific recognition. The question we are left with is whether this is an achievement or a failure for the Negro League Baseball Commemorative Coin Series; are we to celebrate its unprecedentedly low mintage or do we bemoan its lack of… Read more »

Major D

Yes, kudos to Rich! Just to clarify, per Rich’s list it was the NLB $1 Privy that is now the lowest silver proof commemorative. As to your question, sadly it’s two sides of the same coin.

Thanks for the clarification, Major D, and yes, it is sadly ironic that those low mintage coins are hemmed in by the scarcity and low sales bookends.

Kaiser Wilhelm

I just realized, Major D, that I have the 2018 Breast Cancer Awareness clad proof half dollar in my collection. How about that; a “winner” and I didn’t even know it!

Major D

Great to hear! I want to believe that these low mintage commemoratives will be highly valued and sought after by collectors at some point in the future.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Thanks, Major D. It would be awesome if coins that generated very little collector interest now eventually became very much sought after items.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Having put forth the above sentiment and just as a bit of an aside or a footnote if you will, it’s become more than a little apparent to me that with the passing of each year that gets me closer to being 80 I seem to worry less and less about “future values” of anything. I’m sure you get my drift. 😉

Major D

I’m looking forward to what’s in store for 2023 and have some thoughts on what I believe to be the hot products, based in large part on how I saw 2021 and 2022 play out (I welcome all thoughts and differing opinions). First, in looking back through the Mint’s 2021 and 2022 schedules, here are what I believe to be the greatest value purchases in terms of how much the current retail price is as a multiple of the Mint’s list price: 2021 1) #21RF Congratulations Set (Type 1 W-Proof ASE); #21XH Peace Dollar; & #21XC Morgan Dollar CC Privy:… Read more »

Kaiser Wilhelm

That is some truly yeoman work there and would without question earn you the Most Significant Post Of The New Year Award if such an honor were indeed mine to give. Aside from that minor arguably irrelevant obstacle, major kudos to Major D!
Your selections for 2023 are already on my must have list, perhaps surprisingly but most especially so the Army 2.5 oz. Silver Medal as my dear now long departed father served the nation in that particular military branch his entire working career.

Major D

That makes for a special one to get. For me, it was the Navy medal for the same reason. With no subscription for the 2.5 oz medal (that I’m aware of) and a likely low product limit (not announced yet, but the other armed forces medals had a product limit of 10,000) I expect this to sell out quickly. I wonder, will there be a Space Force medal next year in 2024?

Kaiser Wilhelm

I must admit I hadn’t given much thought to this not being an item that one could line up a subscription for. Well, I’ll either get this medal or I won’t, but if I do it will be all that much sweeter since I will have fought for it the old-fashioned way.

East Coast Guru

Major D, a very good synopsis for predicting 2023 best buys. I agree. Of course, I can’t understand the 2021 congrats set as it makes no sense to me as to why it is priced so high. It will be interesting to see if mintages are reduced on any American Eagle product or a fantastic designed new commemorative or /Liberty coin gold or silver that gets a surprise entry into the 23 line up. Interesting year ahead. Hoping for a Space Force medal this year too

Major D

East Coast Guru, it was surprising to me as well- all I can think of is that the 2021 Congrat set had the last Type 1 Proof ASE. Here’s something interesting I just noticed: the Mint reduced the HOL for the W-Uncirculated ASE and S-Proof ASE down to 10 while the W-Proof ASE is still at HOL=25. Additionally, the AI Proof set and AI Reverse Proof set was each reduced down to HOL=5. And the Limited Edition Silver Proof set is now showing an HOL=2. None of these products sold out that quickly, and some are still available. So, does… Read more »

Kaiser Wilhelm

It might well mean lower mintages for 2023, Major D; it could just as well indicate a desire by the Mint to ensure that more individual buyers aka collectors will have a better chance to be able to procure more of the items in the Mint’s annual catalog. The Mint is of course fully aware that the big dealers, major buying clubs and professional flippers are just as well equipped to acquire high HOL subscriptions as they were in prior years able to scoop up a majority of the coins available on release days via their thousands of paid minions.

East Coast Guru,
I have never been able to grasp the rationale for any premium to be assigned to the Congratulations Sets as they are nothing more than a standard proof ASE with the simple addition of a cardboard card. Then again, I suppose one might consider them to have been a sort of precursor to those coins that have added value (some of it rather substantial) due to the scarcity of the older version third party grading slab they are encased in.

Dazed and Coinfused

I passed on the military medals, but since the army is finally getting an issue I will get one, how can i pass on the coin of the branch that showed me for 27 months that a lot of sand without water makes no beach. For the last couple years the other branches got a release while the army was looked over. Biden will probably make the salvation army a special forces arm of the military. Anywho. For whatever messed up reason I survived and still here. Sad ain’t it.

Kaiser Wilhelm

It’s interesting that you should bring up this very subject, Dazed and Coinfused, because I myself have been wondering since day one of the appearance of the first of these U.S. Armed Forces medals how it came to be that the United States Army didn’t rate the number one position in the Mint’s order of release. After all, or at least one would think so, that the first formed and the first in action Service would unquestionably warrant first in line for a commemorative medal. Alas, for whatever reason this clearly has not turned out to be the case, but… Read more »

Dazed and Coinfused

I think 2 coast guard coins made before 1 army coin as well. What strikes me odd is that CG only falls under dept of defense during war time. Then again America’s always at war with something. Maybe I’ll switch to other mints. Somehow the shipping is about the same. But most likely will move from coins to stocks. Maybe even start collecting LEGO. They seem to increase in value faster than anything.

Kaiser Wilhelm

The Coast Guard was pilfered from the Defense Department thanks to the panic-reactive formation of the Department of Homeland Security, a very unfortunately 1984ish sounding name for a totally uncalled for bureaucratic monstrosity.
Coins and stocks are not mutually exclusive; my moolah is in both.
LEGO collecting sounds reasonable, especially since unlike with coins you can actually do something with those little blocks.
