I’m truly at a loss as how to explain the continuing sales popularity of the 2022-W ASE. What with its totals now approaching a half million units I can’t imagine how anyone can possibly imagine this coin will ever be a winner in the increased value department.

East Coast Guru

Agree. Although I am not sure this years proofs are the most they ever made going back to 1986. I’ll need to check. Someday, these will be worth a lot more, but today is not the day.

Kaiser Wilhelm

East Coast Guru,
I haven’t yet looked at the history of the annual number of “W” ASE releases, but aside from that this years sales count appears just plain huge. Then again, I’m not at all into collecting for profit but simply for the sheer pleasure of it, so I’m not that well versed in regard to what makes a coin gain and/or lose value over time.

Sir Kaiser and EC Guru, points well taken. We usually don’t list the highest mintage years for coin series. To compare this year’s 2022-W ASE Proof high mintage figure to the series’ highest mintage years, here are the top-10 highest mintage ASE Proof coins:

1986: mintage = 1,446,778
2006: mintage = 1,092477
2011: mintage = 947,355
2014: mintage = 944,757
2013: mintage = 934,812
1987: mintage = 904,732
2012: mintage = 877,731
2010: mintage = 849,861
2007: mintage = 821,759
2005: mintage = 816,663

Kaiser Wilhelm

Good Sir Rich, I must admit I am truly amazed at those seriously huge quantities; I had no idea these are the kinds of numbers of ASE Proofs sold during so many years gone by! It definitely gives this whole situation a different perspective, and for that specifically and also in general I thank you for taking the time and effort to post these.

East Coast Guru

By the way, I looked up in Numismedia and it shows all the proof ASE eagles going back to 1986 regardless of mintage numbers as valued around $100 in 69 condition.

Rich

EC Guru, your observation is quite constructive. Based on the Numismedia Fair Market Value (FMV) prices, there is very little difference in the FMV prices for the regular issue ASE Proof PF-69 coins over the entire series from 1986 to present. The FMV prices for the 1986-2005 ASE Proof PF-69 coins range from $103 to $108, with the exception of the lowest mintage (mintage = 372,168) 1994 ASE Proof with FMV price = $131 and the 1988 ASE Proof (mintage = 557,370) with FMV price = $120. All the regular issue ASE Proof PF-69 coins with dates 2006-present have a… Read more »

Rich, wondering out loud here, since the premiums on ASE bullion is extremely high, some say due to the mints lack of production this year, the excessive premiums have apparently spread to prior year ASE’s as well with huge mintages. And now maybe to the ASE proofs. Seems like something is up in the marketplace.

Rich

EC Guru, your hypothesis is most compelling and worth noting. Here is some supporting data for the ASE bullion series, listing final mintage and FMV prices for MS-69 coins: Top 10 lowest mintage ASE bullion coins: 1996: mintage = 3,603,386; FMV price = $115* 1994: mintage = 4,227,319; FMV price = $100 1997: mintage = 4,295,004; FMV price = $75 1995: mintage = 4,672,051; FMV price = $68 1998: mintage = 4,847,549; FMV price = $68 1988: mintage = 5,004,646; FMV price = $53 1989: mintage = 5,203,327; FMV price = $51 1986: mintage = 5,393,005; FMV price = $103**… Read more »

Kaiser Wilhelm

East Coast Guru, is it safe to assume those are in fact the dealers’ “Sell” as opposed to their “Buy” figures?

Rich

Sir Kaiser, the prices listed within the NumisMedia Collector FMV Price Guide (i.e., collector FMV prices) represent Numismedia’s Collector Fair Market Value determination for a properly graded coin within each category. The pricing information reported comes from all over the numismatic market including many reliable dealers known for their unbiased market knowledge and information.
Whereas (not mentioned above), the Numismedia Dealer Price Guides (i.e., dealer market prices) present Wholesale Dealer Prices representing dealer trading levels for properly graded sight-seen coins.

One more thought I have on the ASE’s. I like Money Metals and the short articles they have. One of them recently was about ASE’s not being a good buy due to the excessive premiums. Other silver coins would be a better buy to get more ounces per dollar. But it seems odd to me that they are buying @ $30 per ASE. Why? That’s about 9 dollars over what they pay for say a Philharmonic. Seems like they see ASE’s commanding a premium for quite awhile into the future. Some Other coin dealers are paying the same for ASE’s… Read more »

Thanks for clearing that up, Good Sir Rich; much appreciated!

Appears to be a coin that not only holds its value but then some.

Tom

Based on the ‘data available’, there are less than 57,000 of the reverse proof Morgan/Peace Dollars available. Now, whether that is out of the 250,000 maximum or whether that is out of, say for example, only 200,000 are offered under subscription, who knows.

Antonio

If only there had been the Proof S Morgan and Peace dollars this year. The possibilities.

Unholy Toledo, the stock market is tanking fast again today and further yet than before!

It looks like they’re up this morning (Oct. 13). Gold and silver are another story.

Kaiser Wilhelm

You’re right on both counts, Antonio. It does appear that somebody obviously succeeded in totally faking me out with some antiquated news! Didn’t I listen to what the Rolling Stones said such a long time ago, “Who wants yesterday’s paper?”

As you well know, you just can’t believe everything, can you?

Antonio, don’t believe anything you hear and only half of what you see.

Antonio

With my tinnitus, that’s not a problem.

There’s simply no way I can keep myself from chiming in…

Tinnitus here too, Antonio.

What?

Skepticism is a fine protector of reality.

Jimi…apparently a genius in more ways than one.

Antonio

I laugh a lot and realize how blessed I am. Smile, it makes people wonder what you’re up to.

Next to love, humor is the thing in life I’m most passionate about.

How’s this…lets keep the American eagle design as a bullion coin and just switch over to the morgan and peace design for the collector market annually.

Antonio

Sounds like a good plan to me. I’ll sleep on it a couple of days and let you know what my conclusion is.

Domenic Vaiasicca

hahaha!

I think that’s a fantastic idea, gentlemen, so I’m happy to indicate my enthusiastic yes vote by adding the traditional second thumb up.

Hello again fellow collectors. I am an infrequent commenter here on the site and have not visited for a while. I find this site very pleasant, helpful, and educational when I do visit. I am still trying to figure out how to best navigate this site and my question is this. How do I access past articles or topics say maybe a year old or longer for instance? Are they deleted after some time or is there some type of library or archive I can access and search for specific topics? Thanks for your time.

Hello harry guss, I saw a comment in the “latest comments” part of the main web page last week or so that was commenting on an article that was 7 years old, so it appears they do not disappear. I am also not sure how to find a specific old article, but I did see they have a “search” box at the top right of the page, maybe that would work. I personally do not usually have much luck with searches on any websites. They rarely pull up what I was looking for. If you are talking an article you… Read more »

harry guss & Jeff Legan,

How to look up any of the past pages that are stored here on CoinNews.net:

1) Go to the CoinNews.net site Home Page.
2) Click on LATEST HEADLINES in the blue bar near the top of that page.
3) On the page that appears scroll to the bottom to the previous pages display list.
4) Choose which page(s) out of a possible 1,148 pages you want to look at.

Jeff Legan

Thanks for the info, Kaiser Wilhelm. Out of curiosity, I looked at the 1148th page. The articles are 15 years old. Picked an article about planchets and saw people have been asking questions in the comments as recently as 1 month ago. As far as I know, no regular posters here monitor old articles for comments. If those 3 latest comments on the main page were to show more comments (my idea-show the single latest comment from 10 different articles instead of the latest comments, period), perhaps some of those old ones would get answered occasionally. I have been enjoying… Read more »

You’re entirely welcome, Jeff Legan, and I’m very glad that information was of some practical use to you. Those are some very interesting and rather intriguing points you bring up, both about how people still return to very old subjects and how the display order of comments might somehow be improved. As to “peace in our time”, anything having to do with a comment website is always vulnerable to bad behavior, but we can at least be grateful for the present good behavior. And it is too bad that Major D is among the missing; I have faith that when… Read more »

Jeff Legan and Kaiser Wilhelm – Thank you both so much for your responses, they are very helpful. Of particular interest to me are previous topics and articles relevant as to how the U.S. Mint has a history of favoring bulk buyers over every day collectors like us. I don’t know how to convey that or articulate very well what has gone on in the past for a discussion on another coin site of which I am a member. I remember some folks here have articulated that information very well in short order and don’t want to write a book… Read more »

Between the 2 of us, we might have made your task a bit easier, harry guss. But I think most of the info you are looking for will be in the comments, not an article itself and I would be surprised if you can search comments. From my experience here, the info you are looking for might be in the comments of an article that has nothing at all to do with bulk buyers. You are going to have a lot of articles to search through. I seem to recall there was talk of that subject in some comments not… Read more »

Jeff Legan & harry guss, It really comes down to how badly one wishes to locate any particular scrap of information among the 1,148 pages available to us. Obviously it’s a matter of arithmetic, with 1,148 times X number of comments comprising the grand total. Honestly, I don’t think I myself would be inclined to undertake a complete search of that total number of comments because my better sense would likely tell me that I might just have more productive things to occupy my time with, which is not to say that mine is in any way the final opinion… Read more »

You are most welcome, harry guss; it is especially gratifying that our input was of some practical use to you. As to the issue of the Mint heavily favoring its larger/largest customers, that has, as you have clearly stated, been a thorn in our sides as individual collectors for ages. Recently the Mint decided to stop pretending that it hadn’t already been engaging in this behavior and opted to make that back door favoritism an open and official practice by way of the Bulk-40 Purchase Program, one which allows the Mint’s best customers to procure anywhere from a minimum of… Read more »

Righto, Sir Kaiser! Didn’t the Mint just allow the Authorized Bulk Purchasers to pick up over 50% of the allotted mintage of the 2022-W $25 Reverse Proof American Palladium Eagle (product/mintage limit = 7,500 coins).

The Mint most certainly did make that exceedingly generous deal on behalf of the Authorized Bulk Purchasers with regard to the 2022-W Reverse Proof American Palladium Eagle, Good Sir Rich. The other side of this coin (pun definitely intended) is that the ABPs now have to find thousands of customers willing to take these off their hands.

Antonio

I for one will not be one of them. Good luck and good riddance Authorized Bulk Purchasers. What goes around, comes around.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Unfortunately the ABPs can evade any ill fortune we might wish to send their way by using their Magical “return the coins whenever” Pass the Mints bestows upon them with every transaction.

Antonio

I think that’s the only way I’ll buy a proof Type 1 2021 W ASE from the Mint.

Kaiser –
My subscription for the 3 roll Women’s quarters now shows the Oct 25 as the next release date, so looks like good news for you if your says the same thing!.

Kaiser Wilhelm

The “better late than never” appearance of that date in place of the TBA on the Mint’s Subscription List was a source of great joy at this collector’s house, Tom!
