National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Commemorative Coins bore the brunt of the widest and deepest drops. Every product within the commemorative program fell. Losses reached:

  • 2,972 for the 2022-W Proof Purple Heart Silver Dollar,
  • 1,168 for the 2022-S Proof Purple Heart Half Dollar,
  • 923 for the 2022-W Purple Heart Colorized Silver Dollar,
  • 580 for the 2022-D Uncirculated Purple Heart Half Dollar,
  • 557 for the 2022-W Uncirculated Purple Heart Silver Dollar,
  • 228 for the 2022 Purple Heart Three-Coin Proof Set,
  • 81 for the 2022-W Proof $5 Purple Heart Gold Coin, and
  • 50 for the 2022-W Uncirculated $5 Purple Heart Gold Coin.

The U.S. Mint began accepting pre-orders for most Purple Heart commemorative products on Feb. 24. Some only started shipping recently. Extensive gaps between pre-orders and eventual product shipping tends to aggravate sales totals at some point.

Bulk-sold 2022-W American Proof Silver Eagles (product code 22EA040) also fell hard, dropping 485 units for a combined 19,400 coins. The individual option (product code 22EA) slipped 97. Its sister, the individually sold 2022-S American Proof Silver Eagle, lost 427.

Elsewhere, U.S. Mint flagship sets and recently released Tennessee Innovation dollars were among the most-sold products.

All the Purple Heart Commemoratives and the 2022 ASEs (esp. “W” Bulk) took a big hit!

Chris Terp

Welp Kaiser, some folks are throwing money out the door then. Wasn’t there an article last week or so about the PH coins gaining value?

Rich

Chris, that reference was only for the Purple Heart Colorized Silver Dollar gaining value.

Chris Terp

Ah, OK Rich. Thanks for confirming only the colorized coin gained value.

Kaiser Wilhelm

I’m guessing, Chris, those who are returning such large numbers of these coins to the Mint are re-sellers (dealers, buying groups, flippers) who decided the profit, if any, of this enterprise isn’t worth having that much cash tied up in; said funds could be used to more lucrative ends in other numismatic investments.

Antonio

It’s all speculation, it appears.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Well yes, Antonio, it most likely is.

Kaiser Wilhelm

To paraphrase, Major D, if wishes were horses none of us would have to walk.

Antonio

I’m only interested in the Peace Dollars.

Chris Terp

You gotta long wait awhile Antonio until next year for them.

Still peeved my end about Peace Dollar CC being taken out of my cart while I was paying for it. Must have gone through payment process 15 or more times b/c Mint’s website crashed routinely during the Peace Dollar CC & O opening day sale that lasted about 30 minutes. Was only able to secure the O coin that day.

Rich

Chris, do you mean the Morgan CC Privy and O Privy Silver Dollars?

Chris Terp

Ha ha ha – I full of misinformation tonight. Yes, the Morgan’s.

Antonio

I feel diabolical, I got one of each coin. My sole regret is not buying two more of the Peace Dollars. I’ll look forward to next year to purchase the offerings, this time I’m enrolled for 3 Peace Dollars. The only coin I missed last year was the 2021 W ASE Type 1. Sold out in I believe 3 minutes.

Kaiser Wilhelm

That qualifies you for smart, fast and/or lucky, Antonio, but not diabolical.

Antonio

Compared to everyone who didn’t receive one, I feel I’m diabolical. I feel everyone who wanted at least one should have been able to have one. The system didn’t favor us. I hope that’s a thing of the past going forward.

Kaiser Wilhelm

It’s very generous of you, Antonio, to be able to feel that sense of common responsibility; you’re a good man!

As to going forward, it will depend on how fast the Mint wants to get rid of any particular product. It’s whenever the Mint gets antsy about selling low mintage/high desirability items that it tends to set its HOL too high for the product to get to enough individual customers.

Chris Terp

I got the full allotment of Three of the Peace Dollars last year Antonio. The only coins I really wanted from the centennial of the Morgan’s and Peace coins.

Also enrolled the max for next year’s run of them.

Antonio

I only wanted one of each but after I received my Peace Dollar, I regretted not purchasing more. I enrolled for 2023, one each Morgan and three Peace. Then there’s the proofs and as with the reverse proof ASEs, I believe the limit is at one. I’m only willing to pay for one anyway, considering the price.

Tom

Based on the ‘data-available’ here are the numbers sold as enrollment in the last week (since I saved last weeks totals on Sept 6) The 2 coin set is almost 48% sold.
I assume since the coins are available under enrollment that implies the mint plans on continuing the series on an annual basis. Curious to see how ‘sales’ continue…

6-Sep 14-Sep sold
Morgan Unc 109,432   111,047        1,615
Peace Unc 106,461   107,959        1,498
Morgan Proof  127,249   128,933        1,684
Peace Proof     119,184   120,699        1,515
2 coin set         117,976   119,908        1,932

Rich

Thanks for the data, Tom. The Mint has stated that the Morgan and Peace Silver Dollar Program will be an annual series beginning in 2023.

Chris Terp

Yep Tom. I’m all over the enrollments for them 😉

Antonio

Thank you for this information Tom. Learning from the error of my ways, I’ve enrolled. Is it yearly or does it roll over year to year unless cancelled? I’m new to this enrollment program.

Tom

once enrolled it keeps going. I was actually enrolled in one item (maybe it was the innovation dollar) and then turned it off. Then when the mint limited the number of rolls available I thought I was out of luck. As I recall the item was listed as unavailable or remind me or whatever, but was surprised when I could simply it turn it back on
Good luck!

Antonio

Thank you for that Tom. Takes worry off my mind. These are the only coins I’m interested in enrolling for.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Antonio, Tom, Chris Terp and Good Sir Rich,

I think we can all agree that the Mint’s Enrollment Program is the most significant improvement in ordering we collectors have experienced since the Mint’s successful blocking of BOTS.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Major D and Chris Terp,

At that time, prior to the Mint’s installation of the appropriate defensive software, you had no option but to compete against the uncounted multitudes of BOTS routinely unleashed by the Brooklyn Buying Club. You really didn’t have a snowball’s chance in Hades; don’t blame yourselves.

Chris Terp

Kaiser, let’s hope the bots don’t figure out how to game the Mint’s system next year AND don’t run short of silver planchets – ala this year.

Kaiser Wilhelm

We can trust, Chris, that the BOTs are one and done. The new “menace” will appear due to an unfortunate tweaking of the Enrollment Program whenever the Mint sets such a high HOL that the entire inventory of a coin will be spoken for long before its Release Day.

Antonio

But I got my coin anyway. I’m happy I have a full set for ’22. I’m only sad about no proof 2022 S Morgan and Peace Dollars. So sad, too bad.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Antonio,
I tend to fall back on the comfort or relief afforded by one of two (or both) sayings whenever I feel I’ve somehow lost out or been shorted: “It’s not the end of the world” and “It could be worse.”

Rooster

That was crazy with the bots for these. Managed to snag 3 of each though. Hope we never have to go through that again.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Very fortunately for the success of our future ordering experiences as individual collectors, Rooster, the Mint did finally manage to figure out how to curtail the activity of those relentlessly voracious BOTS. After the Mint initially succeeded in establishing its computerized defensive barriers it proceeded to inform its customers that the by far largest single component of the previously so devastatingly effective BOT infestation had originated from a lone source, a certain Buying Club which the Mint somehow, quite likely for economic purposes, neglected to identify by name. As I am under no such constraints I am free to supply… Read more »

Rooster

Thanks Kaiser. That sounds familiar. Thinking you may have mentioned this before. It sure took them a long time to ‘rectumfy’ the situation.

Kaiser Wilhelm

You are very welcome, Rooster, and I must congratulate you on your excellent recall. I did in fact previously provide some information on this particular situation and more specifically on that unceasingly disruptive and annoying buying club. I had come across an exceedingly informative article detailing the ins and outs of this co-operative’s huge, well-organized operations. This knowledge woke me to the realization that we ordinary buyers would never stand a chance of holding our own vis a vis the machinations of such a well-oiled and superbly coordinated juggernaut. It wasn’t until the Mint itself not only came up with… Read more »

Agree Rooster. Way too much stress to deal with to get a coin.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Chris Terp,

Happily this stress condition has been evicted from our coin buying.

Yes, the special subscription holders got first opportunity at those coins and so the coins are available only to them, and the Mint’s favourite dealers. Fortunately for me, I’m not interested in this issue. I’m looking forward to how next year’s coins will look and perhaps I’ll purchase a set (haven’t decided whether unc, specimen or proof).

Chris Terp

Yes Major D, these Royal Mint’s in Canada and UK have small runs but many varieties of coins. If you’re not there first second on sale you can be left out in the cold 🙁

Kaiser Wilhelm

Too much variety for my taste, and the low mintages don’t mean all that much if one isn’t somehow emotionally invested in the national coinage to begin with.

Antonio

Like Swiss uncirculated and proof coins. The postage (shipping) though, ouch.

Rich

Like this Swiss one, who retired today (2020 Federer Swiss Silver 20 CHF Proof)

Yes, a name to join the great ones.

Kaiser Wilhelm

No argument with the great, but as to the retired, Antonio and Good Sir Rich, these days that is becoming somewhat of a TBD. 😉

Kaiser Wilhelm

It seems the Swiss, Canadian, British, Austrian and French Mints (and others) crank out commemorative coins at a rate similar to what the US Mint once indulged in until restricted to two series per year by law.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Stamps, except for philatelic rarities, as opposed to coins, have only a transactional rather than an intrinsic and cash value.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Not sure if you remember, Major D, that I once was a stamp collector also, that is until my dear brother sold my entire collection for German beer money while I was over in the USA attending college.
