Holy Cow! Its great to see the Negro Leagues Baseball coins bouncing in the right direction. I’m glad their popularity is on the rise, and hope it keeps going, going, and gone!!

Domenic Vaiasicca

The price increase was the factor. True test will be the coming weeks and what ads the mint uses to intice buyers. IE we shall see.

Major D

These numbers are through the 6th, whereas the price increase didn’t happen until the 7th at 3 pm. I suspect the sales for the week ending the 13th will also be strong, given the Mint’s email to everyone about the price increase effective that day. I’m particularly interested to see the next week’s sales number for the medal set which went off sale after the 7th, as that number will be for just one day- the last day of sale. So, based on sales ending the 13th I suppose you could infer how much of the sales for the other… Read more »

Kaiser,

Yes, me too! I’ve been burned too many times trying to pick the sleeper that I’ve given that up.

Mmk

I checked the amount available for the medal set a few minutes before 3pm on feb 7 . There were about 4170 left . Which means under 11,000 medal sets were sold

Mmk

Total sales of the medal
Set are 10682!!

Major D

Kaiser, as much as I railed against medals in general lately, I think the medal set here may prove to be the real dark horse keeper- more so than the privy dollar. I’m interested to see how close the final mintage number is to the 15,000-maximum limit.

Chris

The Negro League Silver dollar without the Privy mark is on track to have a lower mintage the one WITH the Privy mark.

Major D

Time will tell. There’s 85,948 of the No Privy on stock to sell, whereas the Privy is sold out

Major D

Kaiser,

Yes, my bad for overlooking the other products

Rich

Chris, a couple of weeks ago Sir Kaiser made a similar observation. However, you have to look at the numbers across all options and make the distinction between Uncirculated versus Proof Silver Dollars for comparisons. With that said, here are the relevant numbers for the Negro Leagues Baseball Silver Dollars through Feb 6th: Proof Privy sales = 19,997 Proof sales = 26,316 (across all options) Uncirculated sales = 6,019 To put those figures into perspective, the lowest mintage Modern Commemorative Proof Silver Dollar is the 2017 Boys Town [mintage = 31,610] and the lowest mintage Uncirculated Silver Dollar is the… Read more »

Major D

Rich, good info- I forgot that adding in the 3-coin proof set and medal set already pushes the No Privy dollar over the Privy dollar in mintage number. I think this series will surely beat Boys Town and Law Enforcement but will be well under the 400,000-mintage limit (across all options).

Major D

Kaiser, I know there are others that post here that are historians, so I defer to them to correct me as I’m rather new to this- but from what I could gather the 2014 Baseball HOF silver coins had a max limit of 400,000 and sold out rather quickly (total Baseball coins sold 884,892). Perhaps this isn’t a great comparison as they were the first curved coins, but its baseball nonetheless. I think the last sports commemorative, the 2020 Basketball HOF, was a complete bust because of Covid. The last big seller commemorative was the 2019 Apollo (621,582 coins sold).… Read more »

Phil

I’ll submit the hoops coin was a bust cause design was blah. A guy, a girl, someone in a wheelchair all headed for the rim? Weak, trying to be too inclusive & not offend, imo of course.

A bold design of someone doing a windmill jam or reverse dunk…something actually cool, would have increased sales. Mighta even reached kids, who aren’t really into coins.

Rich

Phil, Right On! Like Michael Jordan’s Space Jam flying like an Eagle bold.

Rich

Sir Kaiser, in general and especially in more recent years you are correct, as it seems the appeal of commemorative coins has waned over the years since 1986 . However, it has not always been this way and there are even some relatively recent exceptions. Perhaps the Congress still has a big head from the highly successful sales of the commemorative coins commemorating themselves, the 1989 U.S. Congress Bicentennial Commemorative Coin Program, which had the following sales figures: Gold Coins = 211,589; Silver Coins = 897,401; and Clad Coins = 931,650. Here are some other staggering examples of commemorative coin… Read more »

Major D

Rich, you sir are a historian! I can’t believe I’m going to defend Congress next, but when they legislate a commemorative coin, they have no idea what the design will be at the time- is that right? I’d argue that the designs have something to do with the sales success. I think the designs on all you mention are outstanding, with the exception of 1987 Constitution Bicentennial which isn’t as top tier IMO. In addition, other coins with good sales that I really like are 1989 Congress Bicentennial, 1992 Columbus, and 2007 Jamestown. Then there are some coins I really… Read more »

Rich

Major D, with respect to your question on the process of design selection for commemorative coin programs, you are correct in that when Congress legislates a commemorative coin they have no idea what the design will be at the time. “Commemorative coin legislation generally has a specific format. Once a coin is authorized, it follows a specific process for design and minting. This process includes consultation and recommendations by the Citizens Coin Advisory Commission (CCAC) and the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), pursuant to any statutory instructions, before the Secretary of the Treasury makes the final decision on a… Read more »

Chris

Rich, thanks for clarifying. That being said, I think the mint would be wise to market these to baseball fans during the season when./ if the season starts.

Major D

Yes, that would be a good plan. I had heard the Mint had a big roll-out planned for the 2020 Basketball HOF, then Covid happened.

Daniel

I wouldn’t blame racism for low coin sales. Putting “Negro” on a coin isn’t a good look.
I think it’s more racist to buy this coin as it celebrates exclusion.

Daniel

I’m over this woke shit

Rich

Sir Kaiser, your prediction could very well come to fruition, and I hope so. In order for the 2022 NLB Uncirculated Silver Dollar and Uncirculated Clad Half Dollar to set a new record for lowest sales/mintage for their variety, they have to beat the 2021 National Law Enforcement (NLE) Uncirculated Silver Dollar (mintage/final sales = 9,422) and Uncirculated Clad Half Dollar (mintage/final sales = 10,176) which both currently hold the record for the lowest mintage. The only yard stick for comparison of the 2022 NLB and 2021 NLE at this time is their first 30 days of sale sales figures,… Read more »

I never called a black man a negro, I just called him a man.

Before my time some of the best baseball ever played took place behind a wall that was eventually removed. America actually did advance and I appreciate this coin series for making this statement. I offer my own salute to those guys who showed America that baseball is beautiful for all of us and these coins offered another chapter of acknowledgement to the best sport ever played in the best country ever established.

GBA!

Rich

Amen, brother.

Major D

Well said. I appreciate these coins and the new American Women quarter series for the Americans they celebrate. It’s past time.
