US Mint Sales: Negro Leagues Baseball Coins Debut

2022-P Proof Negro Leagues Baseball Silver Dollar with Privy Mark
2022-P Proof Negro Leagues Baseball Silver Dollar with Privy Mark. The coin was the Mint’s strongest weekly seller and it is no longer available.

The United States Mint started accepting pre-orders last week for their 2022 commemorative coins honoring the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Negro National Leagues baseball. The U.S. Mint’s latest round of sales stats show how the commemoratives are doing in the early going.

Sales opened Thursday, Jan. 6, for the nine Negro Leagues baseball products. Each of them was among the Mint’s best weekly sellers.

The no-longer-available, privy-marked silver dollar led. It scored sales of 19,992 from 20,000 possible.

There’s no fear of the individual gold, silver and clad commemorative coins selling out, but the pair of baseball sets could over time. The three-coin proof set was at 2,194 with 5,000 possible while the silver dollar and silver medal set was at 6,832 with 15,000 possible.

The privy mark made the Negro League Silver Dollar a sellout. Maybe Mint should of had a privy mark on the Basketball HoF Silver Dollar to help with its sales? Looks like Mint has found a technique to help bolster sales of coins with privy marks.

I’m one of those who ordered the Negro League Silver Dollar with privy mark.

Coinman

Hey Chris, Who cares? Privy mark or not, these coins are just another Mint release to grab your money. Not attractive, not valuable……………..
not interested!

Chris Terp

Time will tell future value of coin Coinman. Sellout and limited mintage may help keep its value, may not? Be that as it may, it became a winner for the Mint in sales this year already. The other coins / medals in this lot did not fair as well.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Chris,

Hear hear and kudos for as always telling it like it is. The Privy Mark Silver Dollar ought to stand up to time nicely, and the other coins, thanks to their interesting designs, will be attractive additions to any collection.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Coinman,

Commemorative coin series are chosen by the U.S. Congress, not by the Mint. The Mint is given the legislated directives and must deliver on its obligations, and in this case I believe it more than succeeded in doing the subject matter justice.

Rich

Even though the Mint did have a privy mark on the Basketball HOF Silver Dollar, it did however offer the Basketball Hall of Fame 2020 Enhanced Uncirculated Clad Half Dollar Kids Set to help generate interest and boost sales of those commemorative coins.

Chris Terp

The children’s Basketball HoF coin was neat and Mint did wonderful job on its presentation Rich.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Chris & Rich,

I have found the Mint’s various coin sets and items for the younger collectors to be among the more interesting items released over the past few years.

Major D

agree with all of you! I also like it when the Mint adds a twist like making the half dollar in the kids set an enhanced uncirculated with S mint mark to set it apart.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Major D,

The fact that occasionally you can only get a certain variation of a coin by picking it up in a “kid’s set” is a brilliant way to market those!

Kaiser Wilhelm

Chris,

I ordered the Negro League Baseball Privy Mark Silver Dollar also. It’s not only a very attractive coin as such but represents a very telling time in American history.

Chris Terp

Will pick up some of the proof half dollars to give as gifts to friends Kaiser.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Excellent idea, Chris. Those Proof Half Dollars have a very classy look!

Major D

Chris, I’m a big fan of the half dollars, but my preference is the uncirculated as I really like the look and it tends to have a much lower mintage- which can make it worth more than the proof down the road

Chris Terp

I will probably pick both proof and uncirculated up Major.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Major D,

It’s interesting you should say that as I have over the years largely chosen to collect commemoratives in that specific Proof Silver Dollar and Uncirculated Half Dollar combination.

I’ve been dying to know the mintage on the Washington X-ing quarter. Seems like this one was forgotten being wedged between the end of ATB and the start of the new Women series. The Mint has not included Wash X-ing in their quarterly updates. Has anyone heard anything?

Kaiser Wilhelm

That’s an excellent question, Major D, especially since it’s such a very impressive coin.

Major D, the best source of information available at this time for estimating the mintage of the Washington Crossing the Delaware Quarters is: “U.S. Mint Produces 1.1 Billion Coins for Circulation in November” by CoinNews.net – December 27, 2021. According to the report, There are 1,564,400,000 in quarters that the U.S. Mint has yet to officially assign to a design. These are 2021 George Washington Crossing the Delaware quarters. This is based on the total 2,028,800,000 quarters produced in 2021 (i.e., the 2021 ATB Tuskegee Airman AL Quarter and the 2021 Washington Crossing the Delaware Quarter), of which 464,400,000 produced… Read more »

Once again, Good Sir Rich, the man with the answers to whom others wisely defer.

Major D

Rich, Thanks- I did see that article, but it doesn’t make any sense. The mint made the Xing quarters before this date because they were in circulation mid-year. However, why would the mint not release any figures on them? The Dec 27 article states there were 2,028.8 million quarters made, and 464.4 million were identified as Tuskegee. So that leaves 1,564.4 that were yet to be assigned a design- and it is assumed all of these are Washington? If that is the case, then why did the Mint not simply report that as such? Otherwise, if they were not assigned… Read more »

Rich

Major D, The way I’m interpreting the numbers is that the Tuskegee Airmen Quarters were mainly minted between January and April, 2021 and the Washington Crossing Quarters were mainly minted between May and November, 2021. As to why the Mint did not report the 1,564.4M quarters identified as the Washington Crossing is a good question and appears to be misleading. I ran across a similar situation with the Mint last year when in September they would not indentify the number of 2021 AGE Bullion coins produced (i.e., sold) YTD by month as Type 1 (old design reverse) or Type 2… Read more »

Major D

thanks for your responses!

Kaiser Wilhelm

Rich,

I believe one of the quirks of the Mint’s quality of operations is that it is better at minting coins than at communicating about them; c’est la vie.

FViia

Looks like enrollments are full again, WTH is going on with that?

Kaiser Wilhelm

FViia,

This is no different than the situation on a coin release day. First come, first served, and it’s clear that the Big Buyers of assorted varieties do their best to get to this trough first.

Rich

The Eagle Enrollments have not changed, the situation is the same as it has been for about the last 4 months. The 2022-W ASE Proof is still available, and with a product limit of 300,000 and a HOL of 25, I’m frankly surprised it is still available for enrollment ordering, unlike the 2022-S ASE Proof and 2022-W ASE Uncirculated coins which both became unavailable via enrollment months ago.

Allan

The W enrollment was not available for quite a while. While the S and Burnished were, that may have something to do with it. The pictures and numbers for these enrollments all relate to 2021, not sure they have been updated for 2022 yet. 12:27 am eastern on the 14th and the W is still available.

Rich

Allan, you are exactly correct. Sometime last summer the ASE Proof S and Uncirculated W became available for Enrollment ordering, while the Proof W was unavailable. Then sometime in early fall the Proof W became available and the Proof S and Uncirculated W became unavailable. And since that time up to present only the Proof W has been available for enrollment ordering.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Allan & Rich,

Perhaps until now the Mint wasn’t sure it would have enough ASE-W Proofs on hand for release day, and apparently it has solved that issue.

Domenic Vaiasicca

I just got an email stating that…only w proof avail (at least at time of email) im glad i got my enrollment in…..i wonder if this will do away with actual release dates for the 3 ASE for non enrollees (glad i got my enrollments in…..less stress)

Kaiser Wilhelm

Domenic,

The actual ASE release dates will still occur. While enrollment is designed to give you a leg up on acquiring coins, it’s not meant to replace the regular buying event.

As further explanation, enrollments aren’t capped due to the supply of ASEs having been expended but to keep a good number on hand for the official release day.

Especially for the “Holy 18” Advance Release buyers and Bulk purchasers on and before the TBD release day. Who are these untouchable “18”? There must be a FOIA exemption or exclusion for the US Mint – Treasury Department withholding the requested information.

Rob S

I HATE when I see the advance release hyped by sellers. That just rubs our nose in it, that a select few got to get an allocation of coins at base cost, grade them, then ream us lil guys / collectors for a premium.

I really wish the graders would do away with this elitist designation. Grrrrr.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Rob, The irony here is so rich you can practically taste it. These re-sellers either acquire their coins from the “Anonymous 18” or are themselves members of that privileged group, those same secret actors whom the Mint allows to siphon off fully 10% of each coin’s mintage several days before the coins are actually released to the public. The re-sellers then have those coins slabbed as “Advance Release” as if this were something to crow about instead of hiding that shameful fact as well as they possibly could. As far as the graders’ part in this grossly unfair and somewhat… Read more »

Kaiser Wilhelm

Rich,

I’m not joking when I say this list of the Mint’s ultra-privileged Bulk Purchasers is as top secret as anything at the CIA. It’s disgraceful!
