US Mint Sales: 2021 Tuskegee Airmen 5 Oz Silver Coin Returns

17
2021-P Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin and Packaging
U.S. Mint figures show the 2021-P Tuskegee Airmen Five Ounce Silver Coin with sales of 19,079, down 754 from a week earlier.

The U.S. Mint’s latest sales report shows a negative adjustment for the 2021-P Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin.

Released April 8, the 3-inch, .999 fine silver coin backtracked by 754 units during the second full week of its release for a slimmed total of 19,079. Less than 1,000 remain with the mintage limit established at 20,000.

Another thing, its ordering opened again. The silver coin’s sales status flipped to unavailable shortly after launching but that has since changed to "Back Order" — Mint customers can place orders and then wait for shipment when more coins are in stock.

Elsewhere, the 2021 Proof Set led sales again with an increase of 10,006 units to 237,782. The set has been the Mint’s number one seller in four of the last five weeks.

Here we are with another big return, this time 754 of the Tuskegee Airmen ATB 5 oz. Silver Coins. Unless I’m sorely mistaken these quite likely came back from one (or more) of the Big Dealers who probably experienced a fairly common over-acquisitive situations in which the anticipation of huge profits far outweighed the reality of unexpectedly poor sales. The Big Guys do this all the time since they would much rather err on the overstock side than end up short of product while they still had more customers lined up to pay them multiples of the Mint price. The… Read more »

Yeah the Mint does a good job of turning a profit into a double whammy. The enrollments are a good feature and definitely worth it, as you saw. I have just gotten an email that I now qualified for free shipping. What will the Mint do to rectify this discrepancy because Im sure Im not the only one overcharged for free shipping after 3 purchases.

Kaiser Wilhelm

I went all of last year with the Mint somehow being unable to adjust my account to indicate free shipping; this remained the case no matter how many items I bought. However, I soon learned that all I had to do following every purchase (and after my credit card payment had cleared) was to call the Mint’s customer service and ask them to check my buying record. Sure enough, I got the shipping charge refunded to my credit card every single time. All’s well that ends well.

We’ve heard about missing COAs. Think that accounts for many returns? I don’t, given the refunds only, sold out/no exchanges situation.

Kaiser Wilhelm

No, I don’t. I’m sticking with what I originally surmised in that regard; some greedy dealer(s) couldn’t sell anywhere near all they had ordered. Additionally, I don’t think for a minute that the Mint’s return rules are applied to the Big Dealers in the same way that they are to us wee folk. As with everything else having to do with their always more than just a little bit on the far side of shady dealings with the equally sketchy and slippery Mint, I’m sure they somehow manage to wriggle their way around these putative stipulations also.

Chris

Or they could have been returned because they didn’t make the grade (MS-70, that is!)

Kaiser Wilhelm

Regardless, whoever returned those really took advantage of the system to the detriment of everyone else, which is to say all those who would be either personally more inclined or officially compelled to comply with the rules as they are written, in this case the one regarding the (apparently allegedly) enforced limit on “excessive returns”.

Who the heck bought 515 of the 2019 Thomas Jefferson presidential silver medals at $65 each for 1 oz. of silver worth $26 and not even a Mint mark on the unlimited mintage medal??!! LOL
It was the #3 top seller last week at the Mint.

Kaiser Wilhelm

I’m going to pretend to don my very own conspiratorial hat here in order to put forward the supposition that certain adherents of the decidedly revanchist strain of the body politic purchased these Jefferson medals as “party” favors for their next big all-things-retro-worshiping shindig. After all, what better way to honor this particularly august gathering than to give every one of them a shining memento of the one President who likely owned more slaves than all of the other early Chief Executives combined?

I see…for a “can we buy your vote” gift bag item…plus a six-pack of bottled water for standing in the long poll lines…Lol.

Jake

Lol oh brother, if I wasnt laughing I’d be crying. We need better leadership all around up here, except coin news is great. I think KW is onto something with the returns but we really dont know how many people made returns. I think a big concern should be the missing COAs. The mint should withhold refunds until a complete return is made. They had that policy with the freebie coins in the yearly sets. I would say a COA is just as important to a complete set.

Kaiser Wilhelm

I’m with you there, Jake, in that a COA should always accompany any coin or set of coins offered for sale. I’ve noticed that a good percentage of coins and/or sets that are being sold on the secondary (or tertiary or even beyond) market are more likely to include the Original Mint Packaging than they are the COA. What I think this indicates is that whoever sold it to the current retailer didn’t hold on to the COA while the item was in their possession and therefore had to cash it as such minus its documentation. Be that as it… Read more »

I wish my dad was on a gold(en?) coin. Gotta love those chops! Itchy, but worth it.

Kaiser Wilhelm

As long as we’re going this route, chronologically speaking Kaiser Wilhelm II would in fact qualify as my great-grandfather. My real-life grandfather, to be clear, fought on the WWI Eastern Front as a Drageuner (dragoon aka mounted light infantry) in the Austro-Hungarian armies of Kaiser Franz Joseph.

Ah! Thanks for the lesson, didn’t know there was an in-betweener, although the coin dates should have prompted me to check.

BTW, several of my “Austrian-Hungarian” (Galacian) progenitors came to North America to avoid being drafted by the Empire late in 19th Century (not sure what conflict was brewing or burning).

Apparently, they felt a disturbance in the Force.

Kaiser Wilhelm

You’re quite welcome, Mark; entirely my pleasure. Apparently what was not to your Austro-Hungarian ancestors’ liking was (a) risking their lives in either the conflict for control of the Germanic realm against Prussia (and its ally Italy) – Prussia 1, Austria 0 – which ended up creating the German Empire or (b) the invasion and annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina, which was a success, but a costly one, for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Incidentally, the little fellow in the photo above was the grandson of Kaiser Wilhelm and the eldest son of Crown Prince Wilhelm, both of whom outlived him due to the… Read more »

That might indeed be the correct analysis if this assemblage consisted solely of the Little Voters of the Q, but I’m going to hazard a guess that this particular confab had to be a bit more of a spectacle if it warranted solid silver Jeffersons as a minor trinket for one and all. I believe we’re talking about the kind of folks who have very deep pockets with a plethora of politicians’ hands even deeper in them, and all this amidst an endless festival of Dom Perignon, Russian caviar, lobster thermidor and king crab legs. No bottled water or waiting… Read more »
