Last week, the United States Mint released the 2017-P Frederick Douglass Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin. The big three-inch piece features a design celebrating the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C.
Released on May 2 for $149.95, the collectible logged six-day starting sales of 13,761 coins, for the weakest debut in the series since the 2013-dated coins. For more recent comparisons, the last six releases opened with sales of:
- 14,363 coins for the 2017 Effigy Mounds 5 oz. (Iowa)
- 14,582 coins for the 2016 Fort Moultrie 5 oz. (South Carolina)
- 16,190 coins for the 2016 Theodore Roosevelt 5 oz. (North Dakota)
- 15,140 coins for the 2016 Harpers Ferry 5 oz. (West Virginia)
- 14,854 coins for the 2016 Cumberland Gap 5 oz. (Kentucky)

The U.S. Mint published sales data for 281 numismatic products. One hundred and eighteen outperformed their prior weekly gains compared to 83 previously. Three of them increased by more than 1,000 units compared to 2 previously.
Lastly, 8 products saw their sales total reduced compared to 7 previously. The following three products dropped more than typical:
