United States Mint coin sales figures dipped for a second straight week following higher levels during the prior two.
The numbers were lifted weeks back with the release of a core annual product, the 2010 Silver Proof Set. Last week’s sales report, while less robust overall, did show increasing First Spouse Gold Coin demand. But then those were helped by the launch of Buchanan’s Liberty. There was not any new US Mint releases to support other products this time around, and the numbers show it.
In gold coins, weekly sales more than halved across nearly every numismatic offering. Collector proof 2010 Buffalo Gold pieces fell from a weekly increase of 1,280 to 678. However, the 24-karat gold coin which launched on June 3, 2010, topped 30,000 for the year, hitting 30,595.
Buchanan’s Liberty again shined the brightest of the First Spouse Gold Coins. Their sales are already at 7,399, reaching nearly 50 percent of their authorized mintage after rising 1,272 during its first full week on sale. The Buchanan coins sprinted in their debut, with opening sales of 6,127 — trouncing the opening performances of the past four first lady issues.
The Buffalo proof and First Spouse Coins may have an even tougher go of it this week. Their prices increased on Wednesday — $50 for the Buffalo and $25 for each spouse coin, as a result of the record high gold prices.
In gold bullion, weekly sales picked up slightly. One-ounce American Gold Eagles climbed to 33,000 in September, rising 21,500 for the week versus 12,500 for the prior one. Two of three fractional Gold Eagles advanced. The quarter-ounce size entered September for the first time with 2,000. The tenth-ounce increased to 340,000, rising 10,000 since last week. Buffalo gold bullion coins advanced 2,500 for a second straight week and are at 5,000 for the month. They are now at 204,000 for the year.
