US Mint Sales: Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coins Sprint

1

US Mint Sales Figures Image The latest round of United States Mint sales figures dipped, hurt by collectors apparently taking a long buying break during the Labor Day weekend.

One bright spot to appear in this week’s report was the debuting performance of Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coins. In fact, all First Spouse Coins enjoyed better week-over-week sales.

Nearly all other U.S. Mint numismatic products slowed, although the major annual sets put up sizable numbers. For example, the weekly advance for the 2010 Proof Set was 43,120 versus the previous 47,704. That pushed their total past 500,000. The 2010 Mint Set gained 25,800 against 39,617. In two weeks they should top 400,000.

The second batch of numbers are in for the 2010 Silver Proof Set which launched August 26. Another 46,887 was added since their 4-day 241,656 opening sales. That brings their tally to just under 300,000.

Returning to the 24 karat, one-half ounce First Spouse Gold Coins, Buchanan’s Liberty Gold Coins debuted with sales of 6,127. That blew past prior spousal coin openings. The previous four are shown as reference:

  Opening Sales Figures
Buchanan’s Liberty 6,127
Jane Pierce 2,434
Abigail Fillmore 2,881
Margaret Taylor 2,839
Sarah Polk 2,605

Buchanan’s Liberty split out with buyers grabbing 3,641 of the proof and 2,486 of the uncirculated. An attraction for the coins is their classic liberty gold coin design (a reproduction of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle issued from 1840 through 1907). The design was used because Buchanan was never married.

Buchanan’ Liberty is one of only four Liberty’s in the entire First Spouse Gold Coin series. The other three have already been issued, making it possible for collectors to purchase the 4-coin "Liberty short set" without having to wait for the series to end in 2016. The other three include Jefferson’s Liberty, Andrew Jackson’s Liberty and Martin Van Buren’s Liberty.

Finally, the Sarah Polk gold pieces went off sale immediately prior to the launch of the Buchanan coins. What is likely to be their final (unaudited) sales figures are available below:
