US Mint Sales: 2009 Proof Sets Shine, Presidential Dollar Sets Pass 600K

US Mint Sales Figures ImageThe latest round of US Mint coin sales is near a reversal of last week when activity had picked up almost across the board and several milestones had been breached.

This week there are just a few bright spots to talk about… many of the numbers are simply less than exciting. The highlights follow:

  • The 18-coin clad 2009 Proof Set was one of the standouts, with weekly sales higher for a third straight time. Numbers soared another 40,511. That compares to the prior 27,913 increase which followed an 18,448 gain.

  • 2009 Presidential Dollar Proof Sets also shined, albeit less bright. Numbers increased 3,196 versus the previous 2,805. They also topped 600,000.

  • 2009 Lincoln One Cent Proof Sets stood out only because new sales dropped significantly — the Mint sold 11,084 compared to the last reported 35,408.

  • UHR $20 Double Eagle Gold Coins also retreated. 2,298 versus 2,979. Weekly sales are still much better than when the coins struggled with a 1-coin household limit — the Mint will remove order limits completely for the eagles on Monday, Sept. 21.

  • 1000-coin bags of Philadelphia American Samoa Quarters joined the Mint’s "No Longer Available" list this week. The latest stats show 1,499 were sold to collectors.

  • Finally, bullion Gold Eagles are selling well but Silver Eagles are stalling in September. For more, read the CoinNews article: Gold Eagles Top 900K.

  • Sarah Polk Coins Lead Weekly Sales – FirstSpouseCoins.us
It’s no surprise the newly offered Sarah Polk coins were again the best sellers of the First Spouse Gold Coin series. The proof and uncirculated options rose by 216 and 463, bringing the totals to 1,137 and 2,147 respectively. Overall, however, First Spouse Coin sales mostly declined compared to the prior report, with only two of the ten U.S. Mint gold commemoratives showing improvements …

  • Proof and Uncirculated Silver Coin Demand Retreats – SilverCoinsToday.com
Last week’s report showed across the board increases in proof and uncirculated silver coins and sets — above and beyond the prior week’s gains. That is not the case with the latest round of data. Every coin and set retreated slightly, with the exception of the uncirculated 2009 Braille Silver Dollar which registered the same 249 in new sales. 2009 Silver Proof Sets increased by …

In recent silver bullion news that will impact sales next year, the US Mint announced the national park and national site list for the new US Mint America the Beautiful Quarters for release between 2010 to 2021. What many don’t realize is that the law authorizing the 56 quarters also mandates 5-oz, .999 fine America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins. How many collector/investors will purchase these instead of the Eagles?
