Sedwick’s Sixth Treasure Auction Realizes Over $1.6 Million

Featured in the sale were coins and artifacts and printed materials from around the world, including the prestigious collections of Mark Bir, Louis Hudson, Herman Blanton and Thomas Sebring.

Sedwick Announces New Auction Closing Date and VCoins Store

Winter Park, FL.  Treasure auctioneer Daniel Frank Sedwick, LLC has announced that the closing date for their spring auction (Treasure Auction #5) has been rescheduled from May to April. The new closing date will be April 9. Catalogs will be mailed and lots will be posted on the website around mid-March.

The change was made primarily to have all lots sent out and settled in time for the summer holidays, but has created an urgency in getting consignments to the auction house in a timely manner.

 

According to owner Daniel Sedwick: “We have many pledges for consignment so far and now urge everyone to ship their consignments to us as soon as possible in order to better accommodate the new closing date.”

This mail-bid auction surpassed predictions by grossing over $800,000 ($700,000 + 15%), with an unprecedented 92%+ of the lots sold.

Consignments for Sedwick’s next auction (Treasure Auction #4) in the fall of 2008 are already pouring in. One of the top highlights of the sale was a rare mariner’s astrolabe that sold for $28,750.00 (with buyer’s premium). Other major highlights include a Lima, Peru, cob 8 escudos of 1703 that sold for $17,250 and a Cartagena, Colombia, cob 2 escudos of 1622 (the first gold coin struck in the New World) that sold for $23,000 (both prices with buyer’s premium).

In this latest auction, Numismatist Daniel Frank Sedwick included treasure artifacts of over 1100 lots from many shipwreck finds, including:

  • Gold cobs from the Spanish 1715 Fleet of the east coast of Florida,
  • Gold ingots and nuggets from the Espadarte wreck of 1558 off Mozambique,
  • Silver “tumbaga” ingots from the still-unidentified wreck of ca. 1528 off the Bahamas,
  • Rare mariner’s astrolabe from a Florida wreck (ca. 1580),
  • Small artifacts from the Arqueonautas finds off Africa,
  • Porcelains from wrecks off the Philippines (the Ying Lung collection).

There will be also some small gold ingots and nuggets from the Espadarte wreck of 1558 off Mozambique," commented Daniel Sedwick,
