It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No — it’s the new Superman gold coin and a pair of silver medals debuting today at noon ET from the United States Mint.

These three collectibles mark the launch of the U.S. Mint’s Comic Art Coin & Medal Program. Issued in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, the series will celebrate three DC Super Heroes annually over three years.
Today’s featured offerings include the following Mint-designated pre-order products:
- Comic Art 24-Karat Gold Proof Coin – Superman™ — features 1/2 troy ounce of 99.99% gold
- Comic Art 2.5 Ounce Silver Medal – Superman™ — struck from 2.5 ounces of 99.9% silver
- Comic Art One Ounce Silver Medal – Superman™ — contains 1 ounce of 99.9% silver
All three share the same core designs on both the obverse (heads) and reverse (tails).
Designed and sculpted by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna — a former DC artist — the obverse features Superman soaring above his family farm, a tribute to the values instilled in him by his adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent. Inscriptions include "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "2025" on the gold coin; "LIBERTY" and "2025" on the 2.5-ounce silver medal; and just "LIBERTY" on the one-ounce silver medal. All three also include the artist’s initials.
The reverse, designed and sculpted by Mint Medallic Artist Joseph V. Norwegian, depicts a young Clark Kent reflecting on his future as his father watches nearby — a scene emphasizing the dual nature of Superman’s identity. Inscriptions vary by version: the gold coin features "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "$50," 1/2 OZ.," and ".9999 FINE GOLD"; the silver medals include "SUPERMAN" and "HOPE AND STRENGTH." The artist’s initials appear on all three.

Clad Medal Included in Mint’s Comic Art Coin & Medal Program
As noted, the Superman collectibles are the first releases in the U.S. Mint’s Comic Art Coin & Medal Program.
The program will feature three DC Super Heroes annually through 2027, with upcoming releases this year depicting Batman (see recommended designs) and Wonder Woman (see recommended designs). Each year will include a gold coin, a 1-ounce silver medal, and a 2.5-ounce silver medal featuring the same core designs.
In early 2026, the Mint will offer a set of three non-precious (clad) medals — one for each of the first three characters: Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. This set will be a standard offering of the program, to be available after the launch of the individual products for the third character each year.
Numbered Certificate of Authenticity
The gold coin and silver medals are encapsulated, presented in a display case, and accompanied by a Mint Certificate of Authenticity (COA). The 1/2-ounce gold coin and the 2.5-ounce silver medal include a numbered COA.
Ordering, Prices and Limits
Pre-orders for the Superman gold coin and accompanying silver medals will open through the U.S. Mint’s online store, via the page dedicated to its Comic Art Coin & Medal Program.
The 1/2-ounce gold coin’s price debuts at $2,710.00, with this price subject to weekly adjustments based on market conditions. The 2.5-ounce silver medal is listed at $275, while the 1-ounce version is available for $135.
Mintage limits are set at 10,000 for the gold coin and 25,000 for the 2.5-ounce silver medal, while the 1-ounce silver medal has no stated limit. During the first 24 hours of pre-sales, household order limits are capped at one per customer for both the gold coin and the 2.5-ounce medal. Shipping is expected to begin by early fall.
Subscriptions Available for All 1-Ounce Medals in Series
Announced earlier this month, subscriptions are available for the 1-ounce silver medals. They are currently limited to five per household. By signing up once, subscribers will automatically receive the next 1-ounce silver medal released in the series after their registration date, and will continue to receive future releases until the subscription is canceled or the series concludes. The Mint is extending the subscription cutoff date for the Superman medal through September 22, 2025, allowing the subscription window to remain open until the product is ready to ship.

And now we get new articles in the middle of the night! The frequency has picked up lately, good to see. Superman Gold: The initial “ats” dump for today is at 4987 coins. It would be great if that were the “authorized mintage” and final number. Winner. If all 5k coins were ordered in one day, imagine the hype & speculation thereafter – will they make some more? Probably because this looks like a mint to demand scenario – being a pre-order and all… The 2.5 oz Silver Medal might go quickly? That one is at “ats” = 21487 pcs… Read more »
I am also going to try and order one of the 2.5oz silver. I am interested in the gold version a little bit but $2710 is significantly more than expected I was thinking $2300-$2400.
I am on the fence about the gold offering today. Definitely a “mint to demand” looks like…..I usually stay away from art coins….but a US Mint gold offering….feels like last years Liberty Britannic…..and I was pleased with the coin in hand. We’ll see…
5 comments in total > 30 minutes prior to a unique launch.., suspect we’re all on the fence with ya Harry, or the fence broke, and we all walked off for an ice cream….
People are tapped out with this cost of living crisis. It’s so sad. Many collectors even struggling at coin shows to pay their bills to feed their families
I’ll Second that Mate! Good Luck to US ALL!
“suspect we’re all on the fence with ya Harry, or the fence broke, and we all walked off for an ice cream….”
lol.
I never got on he fence, and bought Coinbase back at $70…..everything is cyclical. Good luck players
You are a smart man JQC! I too bought Coinbase, at a little bit higher price point, and am quite satisfied with my ROI. I am surprised the Au Superman coin became unavailable so quickly. I’m interested in the classic Au coins, so I really don’t care for these modern designs.
I got lucky after missing a first fake run up. ThemSman coins are very pricey and ALL remain available as of now. Sacagawea should be a CU 1sr day or sooner and maybe a drop in Au lowers the price a tad. I like the corporate sponsorship coin idea, Sheik keeping dudes out of debt since….
I just got the 2.5oz silver Superman not much of a wait.HarryB I also got the gold Britannia and like it. I graded mine with PCGS unfortunately mine got PR69DCAM first stike. I might send it in one day for regrade although I have never done that before. I’m going to pass on the gold Superman. The fact that it’s $560 more than a 1/2oz Proof gold eagle is ridiculous and I don’t want the mint to think they can raise prices even more.
“The initial “ats” dump for today is at 4987 coins.”
This is making me nervous. I’m feeling like Superman on the coin, a guy with an upset stomach getting ready to vomit.
Topless as well……
Thanks much Rick, I was unable to find anything ‘ats’ related on the page source data, I presume ‘ats’ is in reference to a AP special access site?
I really miss the remaining inventory #’s that used to be accessible on the page source view…
Try this .gov website. Now search for “ats” on the page source.
The number to the right is your inventory…
https://www.usmint.gov/on/demandware.store/Sites-USM-Site/default/Product-Variation?pid=25DSG.
Enter any USM product code after the = and there you have it.
Damn. You are the man.
Time will tell, I don’t care for design of S man so I will wait, maybe Batman will be more To my (AI converted to Tommy, this is going to save the planet…). Liking. All available at this moment, $2,700 I would get a nice $5 CC or $10 Indian. At $5,400+ a z it better be hot as the Joker or will need Au to pop to $5k ish….
Rick hype is the word, we’ll c, basketball, baseball, etc. didn’t make a winner will the Comic books stuff save the USM, doubt it….
They priced me out with an approximate $2K per ounce premium on the gold coin. I am considering the 2.5 ounce silver medal. Good luck today gentlemen.
$2,020 over gold 1/2 oz spot as of AU close yesterday evening..,
$2,020.., “Sir, please turn your head and cough, …now to the other side”.
No joke! Priced out….
I signed on just for interest –
Waiting room just initialized.., Wait time – 1 minute,
Opps, just went in…
Got it! (I think) I have an order number and supposedly a confirmation has been sent BUT my email isn’t working. So, we’ll see ….
REB,
This is the First thing you and I have purchased together…
Great minds think alike?
LOL…
Not sure about that…
With Cag on this one…..
lol.
Will these Superman pre-orders have more product produced prior to shipping in the Fall? Will the inventory shone, be the only ones offered or produced? A cliff/product hanger for sure? I noticed the product limit is none versus a the stated or declared mintage limits. To me this implies that although there is a stated mintage limit, the U.S. Mint is implying through a non declared “product limit” they reserve the right to produce less than the maximum stated “mintage limit”? Gold lists 4,987 of 10,000 Silver 2 1/2oz 21,487 of 25,000 Silver 1oz 46,296 of an unlimited amount. Good… Read more »
“Did you know that Reindeer are actually Caribou? Another interesting fact is that, both male and female reindeer/caribou grow antlers, whereas only male deer species grow antlers.”
That, sir, is some good information. Now I’ll know what to look out for on Christmas Eve.
Estimated unavailable on the gold Superman coin is 12:45 ET. They’ll move to remind me, until or if and when the U.S. Mint decides to produce more inventory? That is unless people gain their senses and cancel? We will see?
Pace slowing new ET till unavailable is now after 1pm.
Nahh Cali plenty of Superpricedman Au there for your liking, 1@a time. If,your paying $5,420:a Z, maybe you get those $15 quarter pounders, you like paying a lot for stuff
The pace on all Superman product and demand has slowed to all but a crawl as of 12:40. The market or demand is lacking to say the least and I attribute a lot of this to the pricing. These DC Comic Art products will be a flop as far as secondary market demand and pricing goes, after the initial small influx of profits are accounted for. These will be a nightmare for arbitragers IMO. If you’re happy with them and truly want to own in your collection, great! If you’re looking for potential secondary market performance, you’d better reassess and… Read more »
Cali, it’s like As they say inVega$ when u hit 19 in Blackjack…..good luck player, prices indeed CALi but the design is a weenie, not a winner…..silly a jet could be a bi plane, easy arse pa$$$$
I have noticed that people like to complain. Maybe the higher cost is because of licensing costs. The cost seems high, but they are bringing in new collectors with these coins. If they become really popular, it doesn’t matter how much they cost. Hopefully, these coins attract a new group of collectors who value these as a collectible rather than some precious metals with a design on it.Coin collecting is the only hobby where people determine the value of things by its scrap value. The hobby needs collectors who look at things differently. The reason coin collecting is dying is… Read more »
Agreed. I’m in it because I like collecting. Some of my coins are worth more, some less. I like them all because I have a COLLECTION (or two … or three). I’ve always been in the “mint to demand” camp. I was hoping the L&B issue last year was the beginning of something good and less stressful. Maybe the subscription model might be that in the future. In other words, ALL releases except Congressionally-mandated ones should be available for subscription. The Mint would then produce coins/medals to the subscription total. I would be happier though I suspect the speculators would… Read more »
I agree with the licensing costs. Personally I’m more of a Batman fan. I’m a collector and i have never sold a coin not even duplicates and I have been collecting since 2009. I started with silver and I bought my first gold coin in 2013 and in 2015 I started the Liberty series gold coins those also had a significant premium. I have purchased several at the world fair of money and every time I would stand in line people would say you can buy a lot more gold for your money. I would tell them I’m a collector… Read more »
canada has made superman coins gold and silver for years. look it up.
Truth, Justice & The Canadian Way‼️ Aay
For those into statistics, the Superman ½ oz. Gold coin went CU in 75 minutes.
I have the complete distribution matrix for every minute, after 12:02, until it went CU.
The distribution matrix was as close to normal as any Gold coin I have tracked.
Google ‘Gaussian distribution’.
(I need the google searches because my Alphabet stock has only been up 12 of the last 13 days)
Available now Cag, as are ALL options…. 3:12edt
I also got alphabet a month or so ago, seemed undervalued. Camco that’s been a bomb, almost X country, USSteel back @$5 a share….titanium move up

Thanks for the heads-up. I will check out the lots.
They loaded the rest of the Gold coins after going CU. So give it another day and then they’re by-by.
Hot coin at 5k available for a couple of hours, to a warm 10k mintage coin now.
I ordered the Gold & 2.5 Silver, so I’ll be interested in the developments on these in the coming weeks.
Your right i just checked and the 1/2oz gold is back. Have they charged your card for the gold yet or are they taking the money closer to when it ships?
It’s a charge showing as pending, so I’m assuming it’ll post soon.
Thanks. Hopefully they ship early rather than late fall. I wonder if the mint makes interest on our money while we wait lol
Hopefully so with shipping sooner.
I’m sure the Mint CFO has got his fingers on our money one way or another?
I would also guess that the Gold that was used for these coins was purchased a year ago, maybe earlier, and that not one Superman coin has been struck…yet. Just a guess.
Hey Rick , I ended up getting the 1/2 gold Superman coin a little after the HHL was lifted. I called the mint and they said they pre-authorize the card to check if credit limit is enough but that it should drop off and be charged closer to the shipping date.
Makes sense on the CC, thanks for the update!
Congrats on the Gold coin AdamL…
The United States Mint sure needs a Confirmed Mint Director.
Rookie mistakes being made…

So tell me, what do all of you that are so in favor of and interested in how great it is that the U.S Mint is manufacturing DC Comic/Warner Brothers gold coins, silver and clad medals at a premium, think about, regarding introducing other mega intellectual companies into the fold? What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, is it not? Is this coin and currency hobby ready for the U.S. Mint to compete with Niue/New Zealand/Perth Mint and partner with the following companies, while continuing to charge exorbitant premium prices, if this is bringing in so many… Read more »
CaliSkier I was laughing through this. Great thoughts here. How about one for Hulk Hogan while we are at it?
I’ve always maintained that NO coin should be minted without express authorization from Congress. Maybe Congress would do no better than the Mint but at least at that point it would be “the will of the people”.
CaliSkier,
I’m in for the Nvidia coin! They’ve made me so much $$$ I’d even pay the mints exorbitant ‘fee’ to get one…Lol. I see the flippers on eBay are asking $3500-$4000 for the Au Superman. Why in the world would someone pay that when they could get one from the mint for the low, low price of just $2710? Are people really that stupid with money? Cheers
Hulk Hogan passed away today – R.I.P. Brother!
Put him on a Coin.
Rich and E1,
The Hulkster changed Pro Wrestling forever, and he had a positive influence on many, many people old and young. An Entertainer like no other.
RIP Brother!…
It’s been done E1 and now those will be in demand assuredly? An icon and blast from the past! He and Andre the Giant along with the WWF put wrestling back on the map and made wrestling quite the spectacle, providing entertainment for millions of fans!
Hulkamania Brother! RIP…. PS “Train, say your prayers, eat your vitamins, be true to yourself, true to your country, be a real American!”
I miss Johnny Carson. Hulk was great in that clip.
East Coast,
From my archives to you.

Rich,

Was on the fence with tbe 1oz Superman. Realism won and i passed as much as i want this coin its pricing is outrageous for a medal. I ll wait for the clad version as a keepsake.
Gold Sun Flower Presales are available on eBay today.

<Bank Roll>
Hopefully (fingers firmly crossed), this acquisition from the Mint will go as smoothly as yesterday’s Superman purchase so that I won’t have to go hat in hand to the flippers and floppers on eBay.
REB, the Sacagawea Golden Dollar gold proof coin will be the hard one to get. It’s the one I am aiming for.
Think both will be hot. Au Sac without the ABB goes CU 12-15m, Sunflower almost as quick as you can spend the $$
just wish the Sacagawea had hallmark gold 24k etc….
https://www.usmint.gov/news/press-releases/unitedstates-mint-announces-sale-of-25th-anniversary-sacagawea-golden-dollar-24k-one-half-ounce-gold-proof-coin
I’m after that one, too. It will be extra tough for me to acquire with my wife’s fast-typing fingers out of town. Hopefully, I can hunt and peck my way to victory.
REB said re: my “Reindeer Games” quip and facts: “That, sir, is some good information. Now I’ll know what to look out for on Christmas Eve.”
Well ya know REB, “Grandma got run over by a Reindeer, walking home from my house Christmas Eve, some folks say there’s no such thing as Santa, but as for me and Grandpa, We Believe”! Haha
Will the gold 1/2 oz superman coin sell out tomorrow before one person per household limitation is lifted?
Price is high!
Six months from now will the coin be more or less than issue price?
Who knows?
Anyone’s comments on this is appreciated.
mshe, didn’t get a chance to answer before now, however due to the high price and many numismatists, not necessarily being into these comic book designs, the gold Superman coin will not go unavailable before the Sacagawea gold coins become available 7/31. Once they do move to unavailable status, I expect to see them sporadically become available from now until ship day in September as people have second thoughts and have time to reflect and decide they no longer want the coin. Also, since many people bought as a flip and or speculative purchase, as they see the secondary market… Read more »
‘Price is high’…says it all as far as I’m concerned. I’d second Cali’s comment about buying what you like, but if you’re buying to flip for $$$, it’ll probably be dicey! I’ve purchased many Au coins from the mint over the years, but haven’t since 2021 due to their very high premiums on PM coins. I’ve never sold a single coin, but like to realise a gradual ROI over time with the ones in my collection. Paying the mints price point for recent coins reminds me of those naive folks buying from HSN and Mike Mezack….a losing proposition. I’m only… Read more »
Order limits have been lifted all Superman options remain. If you like it buy it, but I don’t see leg$ in the aftermarket. Design, costs all in play, you’re kinda buried till Au hits $5k ish. I prefer the classic pre 33 US gold, $20,Liberties slabbed offer some decent values. Or even AGEs, you get more Au for your $$$. I always have an eye towards profits I more accumulate but do have Dansco albums, which pursuit has gone on sabbatical.
SuperMan HHL of 1 remains..,
The expected in-stock date is Fri Sep 19 2025.
Still remaining HHL of 1 @ 12:06; 3,197 remaining,
Super Man 2.5 oz HHL of 1 was just removed at. 12:02.., Fair Game Boys! Buy’em up!
The expected in-stock date is Thu Sep 25 2025.
The Big Boys were able to order today at 12:00
I cancelled my Superman ½ oz. Gold coin once the HHL of 1 was not removed for me.
Was prepared to order more IF the HHL was lifted.
I need multiple coins. I don’t need just 1.
I’m not a fan of HHL of 1 and this offering will play out like most HHL’s of 1.
So badly played by the acting United States Mint Director…
When it lingers.., the secondary market doesn’t ‘zing’er’
“I’m not a fan of HHL of 1”
I AM a fan of HHL of 1 because I am a COLLECTOR. With an HHL of 5 or 25 or none, my only option is to go on eBay for most every coin. No thanks. The acting director played this one ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. I don’t have a problem lifting the limit after 12 or 24 hours, but for goodness’ sake, let collectors have a shot at collector coins.
1,044 Superman ½ oz. Gold coins went off the board in ~ 6 minutes…
HHL Removed after 12:15
Yes…But…
The HHL was removed AFTER the 1,044 went off the board in ~ 6 minutes.
Previously there were 27 taken in 2 hours and 20 minutes…
The HHL was lifted at 12, but the website did not update the lift for 15 min…
People jumping the gun……
Sounds a little Fishey ( fun fact AI spell correct automatically changed fishey to Disney. WTF). Rookie mistake letting insiders to trough early. But, still up, all options no HHL…..we will c, but c9moc book fans don’t necessarily buy $2,700 coins or silver medals at $100 a z. Nice if you, like if not pass, easy passes
Super Man HHL removed –
There is currently 2,729 Superman 1/2oz gold coins available. Cag, did you re-order? Or perhaps because there isn’t an immediate sell out, you no longer are interested? Since you’re in favor of such a high premium I’d think you jump back in and buy the amount you were after? I’m assuming that you might be needing more than one for gifting? Glad those who wanted 1 or more were and are still able to buy as many as you like! BTW, there is $7,395,590 worth of Superman gold coins just hanging out for the taking! 4:09 ET. Knowing Superman is… Read more »
To the extent that this release is perceived as a “flop”, there are myriad reasons:
1) it was too expensive for most collectors (even those who collect gold coins);
2) it was a clunky design;
3) no one asked for a superhero series;
4) expectation and hype outstripped demand; and
5) there have been too many coins (silver and gold) released this year (something had to give).
All of the above reasons were repeatedly identified pre-release on this very board. I’m sure others can add to the list.
While I ‘get’ the Reverse.., it is overly LAME, The REASON he’s at the fence looking onward.., is because he wants to get the hell off the farm, because it’s so lame (though I personally love farms and admire our farmers, I still don’t live on one” IF this is a DC Comic related release.., then there should be a ‘Kapow!” Somewhere on the coin, at least an action scene…, Nope, Nada, Nothing…, Leave it to the knuckleheads at CCAC, CFA, & USM to screw up the Reverse.., I’m sure at some point, someone said, “let’s have balance, & tell… Read more »
REB, I don’t like that this is a vanity series for the designer and or sculptors to flaunt their initials! Their initials are as much of a part of the design as any of the other design elements IMO. Too big and too prominently displayed. Way, way worse than those 1909 VDB initials IMO. Also, don’t care for the jet vs prop plane and the coins and medals omission of, “truth, justice and the American way”, saying/motto. Oh well, whatever, as you mention high price, I will not be purchasing any of these comic book, DC Comics/Warner Brothers, high premium… Read more »
Spot on Cali, I never saw a reason for this series and the Jet reverse Amd maybe a pot farm, there’s $ there, baseball didn’t sell crazy, basketball neither, pink gold, low mintage wonders all didn’t draw in more folk, and unfortunately this series won’t either, there’s designs maybe off, or even better Batman!? Anyway, long term bullion items and a 2 1/2z Ag round.
Truth, Justice and the Human way….. huh
