Springfield, best known for his chart-topping hit Jessie’s Girl and a long-running acting career that includes roles on General Hospital and in major motion pictures, described the collection as a personal passion.

Stack’s Bowers Galleries President Brian Kendrella praised the offering as a showcase of Springfield’s eye for quality.

"We are thrilled to bring these incredible coins to market," he said, noting the unique crossover appeal of a collection formed by a renowned entertainer and dedicated collector.

Springfield, who continues to perform and record music, is also the author of the bestselling memoir Late, Late at Night and a longtime mental health advocate. In a nod to his music career, Springfield will offer a special bonus to the winning bidder of the collection’s top lot: two VIP concert passes and a backstage meet-and-greet at a show of their choice in the United States.

The coins will be featured in the Stack’s Bowers Summer 2025 Global Showcase Auction, held in conjunction with the ANA World’s Fair of Money. Lot viewing will be available beginning August 27, with the full catalog and bidding information posted at www.stacksbowers.com. The auction preview for this event is now online at Rick Springfield Collection.

Great interview with Numismatic powerhouse, David Hall.

Rick certainly has an eye for quality, beautiful Gold right there.

REB

Great interview with Numismatic powerhouse, David Hall.

… who seems completely blown away by the quality of Mr. Springfield’s collection. Guess I’m in good company on that point.

E 1

Rick,

Good eye. Yup, that’s David Hall – Wow!

This is how I remember him. “Numismatic Powerhouse” is right. I talked to him on the phone a couple of times back in the 90’s. So long ago.

Craig

Isn’t there someone who posts here regularly that wants a ‘Stella’ coin? Here’s your golden shot!

REB

It does look yummy. Just think what I could buy with four dollars?

CaliSkier

LOL, good one REB! Just less than 2 gallons of gas, less than 2 dozen eggs and less than a gallon of milk! How about you buy it, and if you drive here to Raleigh to visit, I’ll top off your tank before you leave and take you out for a nice steak dinner in trade for that $4 Stella! Haha. A really sad thing just popped into my mind. What would a pawn shop pay if an unknowing person showed up to pawn one. Some say a pawn will sometimes offer 60% back of melt. A really sad thing just popped into my mind. What would a pawn shop pay if an unknowing person showed up to pawn one. Some say a pawn will sometimes offer 60% back of melt. That would be roughly $390 bucks for a potential $300K+ coin.

Ouch!

Craig

‘$390 bucks for a potential $300K+ coin’…that’s why you have to be very disciplined when you enter any of these auctions. Emotions can sometimes get the better of folks and they end up paying overboard for an item, like $9200 for a toned Ike. Not that Rick Springfield needs the money, but he’ll be getting a nice check soon selling all those Au coins. Cheers

Me…. Last time years ago a coiled was offer at $75k cheap now (AI preferred snow to “now” this is going to run the world WTF) …. How many would have preferred a $TELLA remake v. Say a Mercury dime, a Walker.. Zzzzzzzzzzz
at this stage I be liquidating lest something unreal appaorches, just awaiting getting reeked trying for an 1804…

Rich

I would have also much preferred a reissue of the $4 Stella gold coin at this time. BTW, which historic Stella coin design do you like best, the Type 1 Flowing Hair or Type 2 Coiled Hair (or both)?

Craig

JQC,

Bingo! I was thinking of you when I saw that Stella coin. I’d love to see the mint do a Stella coin and I’d buy it even with their ridiculous added fees. What is the 1804 you’re referencing? Is it something the mint will be releasing for the 250th anniversary?

John Q. Coinage

Thanks Craig, been after one si ce I worked at a LCS inthe 1970s. Back the. I asked dad, uncle, everyone to buy one, or a C3a for 25k, used to be a big US stamp buyer. But, they all laughed. At a show in the early 90s they were still “affordable “ just not by me. I was able to buy a red AU58 14d 1c, gold was tuff. We had a lot of incredible stuff I coulda, shoulda, woulda bought, all I needed was $$$$$$. As to 250th, I think a gold 1804 restrike dollar or such is… Read more »

Craig

JQC, Don’t beat yourself up too much about past opportunities, I wanted my Dad to buy a Shelby Cobra 427HP monster in the mid 60’s, but he thought it was too extravagant! Think about what that would sell for these days! I’m just happy I was able to purchase a few coins in my youth and hold onto them throughout my life..including some nice (and cheap by today’s standards) Au examples. Cheers and good luck with that Stella!

John Q. Coinage

Thanks, and my brother got a 1969 Road Runner 383 for his first car, our neighbor was a Plymouth dealer, was supposed to get like a Dodge dart, boy that car flew, one day 105 on SEPULVEDA in the valley. It’s expensive now and when I did get a 914 in 1975 they had the last of the leaded gas 911 Carreras, for $16,000 and with the new addition a chilled glovebox for sandwiches!!! Maybe $200k now…but aI might have gotten killed with my driving..I was 18….. A lot of opportunities in life, you’re right forghettaboutit…. $TELLA!!! Always thought it… Read more »

Rick(Rick’s) Springfields 1908 Indian Head Half Eagle is beautiful! As you’re aware this is a design that I have a great affinity for! Rick’s coin is in an NGC holder graded MS67, one of 3 in this grade, with one sole MS68 being graded higher. PCGS lists 2 in this grade and a lone MS67+ being the top grade. Rick’s coin was purchased on September 27, 2013 through HA for $37,250. The NGC guide has a listed value of $62,500 and PCGS lists $95,000. This coin in this grade has been absent from the market since Rick’s purchase in 2013… Read more »

I’d be in a heartbeat if there were anything I’m chasing. My gold wants are down to the 1795 Draped Bust Small Eagle and the 1909-O Half Eagle. I am starting to branch into early gold commemoratives. Wonder if he has the 1915 octagonal Pan-Pac $50? Or the round, for that matter?

I’ll definitely take a look-see at the auction. We all know what my twitchy mouse finger has done in the past. lol.

P.S. – Does he have many/any southern gold (C, O, & Dahlonega) in the auction? I don’t recall. Maybe he’s keeping that all for himself.

CaliSkier

REB there are no “Southern” gold coins in the auction. He had been building a gold type set collection and I suspect if he owned a Pan Pacific Gold $50, it would be in this auction as well? I’m guessing he didn’t collect commemoratives, gold or otherwise. He likely has put his entire gold collection up for auction as based on his love and desire for history, gold and rare high grade U.S. coins, I don’t see it las being likely, he’s kept any on the side to ogle at? I also speculate that these are being auctioned off due… Read more »

REB

A sensible take, Cali. Guess I should see if Mr. Springfield would adopt me before the auction. Possibly I could be that coin-collecting son he never had.

John Q. Coinage

His stuff is Au real Cali, impressive Amd Mr. Hall is not an easily impressed guy. The pre a Liberty golds are staggering, some onolicoous 1830’s 5$…..
I wonder if they will offer reslabbing with a Springfield Collector Moniker, but I do t gotta worry bout that.

Glass Half Full = Newmont Corporation (NEM), Largest Gold Mining Company in the World, hit a three year high yesterday @ $61.17. On July 1, 2022, Newmont closed @ $61.17.

Glass Half Empty = Currently, Newmont Corporation is down 8% for the day ($55.64) as it’s CFO, Karyn Ovelmen, has left the company…

Rick

Perhaps a buying opportunity – a glass to fill up?

John Q. Coinage

I think around $40 ish, Cag said Newmont t was not a good play???? Camco, and Freeport have been outstanding

REB

Does anyone know WHY Rick Springfield is selling these beauties now? Does he have a massive stash of backup coins or is this his entire collection? I’m not sure I’ve seen the answer to those two questions.

Rick

Hard to say, as to WHY. He still works, writes music, and I’ll bet he gets royalty checks for his hit music?
Anyway, in the interview he said: “I have other collections, and I collect stuff that I love.” “I’ve never collected stuff, oh, what would this be worth in a number of years, whatever, I buy stuff that I love, and that’s the stuff that has been great investments for me”……

John Q. Coinage

He’s not a kid anymore, he’s 75, and don’t know about heirs, no gold errors,,,,yup yuk…
Reb step up, maybe put together a 1830s $5 top pop set…. Me I. Buying the bubble gum gold coins

E 1

JQC,

It’s hard to believe he’s “75” – but true (according to Copilot).

Robert Plant 76
Jimmy Page 81
Roger Daltry 81
Mick Jagger 81
Keith Richards 81
Paul McCartney 83
Peter Frampton 75
Eric Clapton 80
Billy Joel 76

Are there any more highly astute coin collections hiding out in the music biz? Time will tell.

He’s still in incredible shape and health. He looks 50ish. Still touring. Cheers to him.

Springfield was kind of late to music stardom. His acting career carried him until “Jessie’s Girl” hit #1 in 1981.

Odd workings at the U.S. Mint? Just before noon we were at 1,651 ASE w/Army Privy coins. Then BAM another reload and we are back up to 2,761 coins avail for sale? Strange workings. Perhaps a remind me notice sent yesterday and people attempted to purchase a second coin? Are people jumping ship and cancelling orders? Could these be dealer returns/cancellations? The Mint does allow for dealer returns as long as they stay below a certain percentage or dollar amount, for their friends in the NBPP/ABPP. I’m betting those rules/stipulations are flexible, depending on the given account? Also, the “return… Read more »

John Q. Coinage

Cali don’t give them ideas. 1804 mintage set at 1,804…..I smell a rat

not for sure but something like this imagine the Website

Rich

Cali,

I was thinking the same thing. Is it unusual for the Mint to have not stated the mintage and product limits (and HHL) for the 2025 Sacagawea gold coin by this time, with only 16 days until its release? What do you think the mintage/product limit will be? I wonder if the mintage and product limits will be similar to the 2024 FHG coin, i.e., mintage limit = 17,500 and product limit = 10,000.

REB

I wouldn’t be surprised if the release date gets kicked back. One week after Superman and three weeks before Liberty is a pretty tight (and expensive) corridor.

John Q. Coinage

Nice way to spend the $$$$$…. Some great items, wonder if he had help?

E 1

Does anyone care to estimate the total value of the entire collection up for sale?

Tens of Millions $$$$.

Rick

The price guides on both PCGS & NGC might present a ballpark number. But then again, the provenance, the CAC, and David Hall himself said he was going to bid on something, so the sky’s the limit!?
It should be a fun auction event.

E 1

August 25–30 and September 2–5

I’m going to write those dates down in my Calander.

E 1

“But then again, the provenance”

I’m thinking there will be a special foiled “Rick Springfield Collection” sticker for the back of the holder. These two auctions are going to be off the hook. News of the auctions are already showing up in the national news outlets. Yet, two weeks ago, no one ever knew RS was a coin collector. As per the case when I did a deep AI search for REB on the subject three weeks ago.

Bam! It’s going to be epic.

E 1

Does anyone think there will be a catalog for the auction?

REB

It IS going to be epic and I’m hoping for a catalog. I’ll also have some popcorn handy while I watch.

Rick

I’m inclined to think yes, for a printed catalog of the auction?
REB and I have been getting one delivered ever since the FHG Privy auction(free). And they do not disappoint. The last catalog was the June 2025 Showcase Auction at 3/4″ thick, 350 pages in color on semi-gloss paper. It reminds me of a dept store catalog from days gone by, but better – no girly stuff though, just coins(and paper $)!

Last edited 3 months ago by Rick
REB

I still have the June catalog on my desk. It is nice and it gives me a chance to relive past bidding glories. Plus, these catalogs give Rick more verbiage ideas to deploy in his coin descriptions!

John Q. Coinage

I’ll send some pages. From a copy of Bowers & Rudy’s fixed price offerings, aye Carumba…
q;: Why in the world did AI spell check change aye Carumba to Carumna. Really
off to watch All Stars, baseball not Ricks

E 1

Here is an article that says the entire collection is worth $580K. But from what I can tell, there are just two coins in the collection that may be worth more than $500K combined. Also, that video above, has already gone virial – its everywheres. I could see a lot of people from Hollywood and the music industry chomping at the bit to get in on these coins, not forgetting to mention the numismatic elite. This will be a big event, I’m sure.

Cheers

RS_Coin_Auction_News-Copy
REB

He may have bought the entirety of the collection for $580K but I’d bet the sale delivers a much higher dollar total.

The Stella is a pattern. It’s not an actual coin. The average collector will NEVER own one. Please stop promoting it as a collectible coin.

Rick

Lolol

REB

It was a pattern, but it is collectible. It was distributed to Congress for potential approval as an international trade coin. Ultimately, nothing passed, as it was decided that the Eagle/Double Eagle handled the intended function well enough. A side story about the Stella was that it is rumoured that congressmen gifted the rounds to their mistresses, as several (many) were turned into jewelry.

John Q. Coinage

Yup Reb, I saw one with a mount soldered to it at a show in the 1980s, no slab, was about $1ok at the time, big Ol loop v. A bezel…

REB

Interesting stuff, JQC.

John Q. Coinage

Correct, but has always been lister as an issue in Redbook, etc. many of the patterns would be illegal today. I’d gladly pay $4 for this “pattern”.

1908 No Motto – Get is slabbed and sell it on eBay with a “Buy it Now” price that is a tad lower than the average market price for any comparables. That would make for a quick sale.

Gold Sacagawea is limited to 7.5 k at 1 per order

John Q. Coinage

Will be interesting, not nearly as popular as a FHG design but the Gigi. Will suck it up like free beer…
pricey not sure but the # makes it viable…
I think but Sacagawea dollars are not the cats meow to most….cool tho

Rich

It will be the gold coin to get this year. But with a mintage of 7,500 (2,500 less than the FHG) and being 1/2 oz 24K gold (FHG was 1 oz), they will be gone within the first 90 seconds of sales (as fast or faster than the FHG), IMO. Best of luck to all interested, we gonna need it.

REB

I see your points, Rich, BUT has this been THAT popular a coin and design?

P.S. – I hope you’re wrong about a 90-second sellout. If it does go that quickly, I’m sure I’ll be back in the shadows on a random eBay corner trying to procure a Sac.

And for a different take, and one of the best covers out there. Morgan James is her name…

Rick,

Nice, now she’s a sexy dish of talent. I’ve never heard of her before. Excellent vocal range and control. An ocular delight. Unlike Tyler, sometimes I can’t tell if he’s a man or a woman. But Morgan James is definitely a woman.

Let me help you out with that link…

BTW, I ordered a bunch of 2025 Mint Sets this morning.

Not bad at all…
Congrats on the Mint sets, I bet those do well this year. Send us a pic after you cherry-pick a top pop 50C & 1C for the Albums – if you break one or two sets up?. Better yet, show us your completed Album(s) when ready Bro.
Maybe they’ll short-mint the sets to 150k, instead of 190k, throw a bone out there!?

E 1

Rick,

Yes, Yes, and Yes.

You know me well. Pics in a week or two.
